Google Contacts Has A Standalone Site
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:59 AM on September 25, 2008
Whether you prefer managing your contacts outside Gmail or you don't use Gmail but still want to use Google Contacts to manage your Reader or Docs contacts, try the standalone Google Contacts page. The URL isn't type-in friendly, but it deserves a bookmark if you need to do contact management outside of Gmail. [Google Operating System]

This is a other great tool from Google, I use most stuff that Google offers and the Google Contacts is on of my favorite tools.

How long has this standalone page been on the web?
@crichman:
Works for me

It didn't work for me at first, but I clicked the link from [googlesystem.blogspot.com] and it magically started working.

To those that are getting 403s, make sure you're logged into your Google account. I was able to access it just fine, then to reproduce the issue I logged out and got a 403 myself.

The cure for laziness! I liked it. Was able to delete 3 Contacts I never added (Gmail adds them for you because they have nothing better to do).

i just let google manage my contacts, i've got the few i need on their, and it adds almost everyone you e-mail anyways...so i just let it accumulate the crap...the people who i care about or on my msn list instead

If you're using Google Apps for Domains the address is
http:||mail.google.com/a/yourdomain.com/contacts/ui/ContactManager

What's up with Google keeping the email addresses of people I emailed only once? I went thru that list and it was like using the Wayback Machine to revisit the memories of drunken skanky one-nighters and psycho ex-girlfriends...

It still sits in the mail.google.com domain, so I can't get to it at work. Oh well.

Nice! I, for one, hate having to switch from email to contacts all the time. I've been creating a lot of career contacts lately and it's a pain to copy all of their contact information from their signature, paste it into a TurboNote, open up Contacts, and add it field-by-field. Being able to use your mail in one window and contacts in another is ideal.

Too bad they didn't build in LDAP. This would have been really useful if they did. I hate having 3-4 collections of addresses all of which can read LDAP databases but none of which will act as one.
Oh well.

https is nescessary for those of us with "Browser connection: Always use https" enabled. Google doesn't seem to make the automatic redirection :|

I've been using the Gmail Contacts iGoogle widget for a while and it works great. I sounds like it is a lot easier to use that a direct link.

I love google's contacts manager, but seriously, where's the help with duplicates and merging email addresses belonging to the same person? Oh, and why doesn't the search return results besides names (can't search phone numbers, addresses, etc...) Please help me if I'm simply missing these functions.

Now I just needs another favicon, since I use one for mail, another for calendar and other one for docs.

You have to Login to GMail first before it works.

I think it should be noted, you need to be logged in through gmail, or other google service, in order to use the link. You will not be asked to login, through the link, hence you get a 403 Forbidden error.

In case anyone is wondering, the standalone contacts url for google apps (for your domain) accounts is the following: http://mail.google.com/a//contacts/ui/ContactManager

Kinda like the contacts 'app' in gmail, but a few features would be great:
- Sync contacts with outlook / thunderbird / et al
- sync contacts with facebook
- Merge contacts (so many dupes!)

Frustrating, isn't it? I wonder why they aren't implementing such an important feature. If it was another company I'd suppose they were cooking up a 'premium' version they intended to charge for.

@VolettaBabalistic: Hopefully this might be the first step in this direction. Very sad that in 21st century, there is no such service to keep one's contacts synced from/to anywhere. Or is it?
I would expect that even sync from/to central place and phone, another phone, palm, pc or even fridge would be commonplace today.

This is really great. Now if Picasa would just stop adding dead people to my contacts, I'll be in business.
That sounds weird doesn't it? Well I've scanned a bunch of pictures of family that has since passed on. When I name them, Picasa adds them into my contacts. While that's a great idea for most people, it's not working for me obviously. I just wish they'd allow you to name people and have an option to NOT add to contacts. *sigh*

You get the 403 error when you're not logged in to your gmail account.
