Yahoo Messenger 9.0 Launches
Posted by Gina Trapani at 10:25 AM on September 24, 2008
On the heels of the Windows Live Messenger beta, Yahoo launches version 9.0 of Yahoo Messenger (Windows only) which now lets you embed video clips, Flickr images, and maps right in your chat window. Unless you choose "Custom Install" it will also try to put the Yahoo toolbar in your browser, so watch out for that. [via]

I tested out the beta and had serious problems with it. Never could find anywhere to report those issues... I'm kind of scared to try 9.

I really hated the Yahoo Messenger for Vista edition. I hope this is better and not so screwed up on the UI and menu system.

Remember how they were working on a special Yahoo Messenger for Vista, outside of the main line? I even installed the beta. What became of that effort? Vista is old news now

Just installed YM on my brand new Vista Home Premium computer and it runs for literally 4 seconds and crashes. I can only get YM 8.x to work. The beta YM for Vista sucks golf balls through garden hose. It doesn't even have webcam support.
Seriously bummed out here.

The latest Mac Beta is pretty good, but still lags way way behind the windows versions.

I wonder how long until Pidgin will have the same features.

For anyone who does not like the "dropper" file exe, there is a way around that to get the full size file to download to your hard drives. ^__^
You can use this weblink and set the two-letter code for your nationality of choice (ie. sg for Singapore, cn for China, us for the United States, etc...):
This is the link that I used to get the Singapore edition that I wanted. Hope this helps! ^__^

I had no idea that people still used first-party IM clients.
Seriously... this is like a revelation to me.

Aiya, I forgot to bold the other part of the link that needs to have the two-letter code changed. >__<

@Zepth: Why? I use Pidgin on my Vista machine, and only whip out WL Messenger when I'm going to do a video chat, or something.
Something I was surprised with was that all the computers at my university have Pidgin installed. :D

So far 9 has been running fine all day for me on XP Pro. Quick edit of the hosts file, no more ads, and can make the messenger slim out very nicely. I do miss having the ability go go to a classic theme.

The new version has nice features but the memory usage and startup time is rather high.
And too bad that the invisible feature is bypassed by sites like [invisible-scanner.com]

@Saad Baig: It was the worst for myself and my boyfriend.... half the time he couldn't see me online and half the time I couldn't see him online. Neither of us uses the "invis" feature. I couldn't click on links he would send me... links work everywhere else on my comp though. Odd enough, the beta worked great up until the last month before the new version was released.
