One Click App Killer Turns Your Mouse Into An App Assassin
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on September 23, 2008
Windows only: Free application ClickGone (or One Click App Killer—there's some confusion over the actual name) turns your mouse cursor into a crosshair and forcibly kills the first app your pull the trigger on. Although it's fun to fire up Internet Explorer and kill it for sport, the application is actually intended to kill off frozen apps quickly and easily. Assuming you were to create a keyboard shortcut to run ClickGone, it could serve as a simple go-to for knocking out a stalled application. This single-use utility is freeware, Windows only.

Is this different than C+A+D? As mentioned, sometimes C+A+D just simply doesn't do the job. Does this do what C+A+D doesn't?

@glaeven: well some times it doesn't work, ether the app on screen is not in the list or it just wont quit. vista is allot better but it seems they made it for xp (thou it will proly still work with vista (thou I have not tried it))

Nice app. I love the ctrl+alt+esc app killer on KDE. I'm glad to see Windows get that functionality too.

The fact that such a key feature has only just become available for Windows systems clearly shows how far ahead free software operating systems really are (or you could say, how far behind proprietary operating systems really are).

"...Although it's fun to fire up Internet Explorer and kill it for sport..."
That part had me laughing! ^__^
Actually this looks interesting...I have been using Process Explorer to kill frozen apps for quite a while now.
Alternatives are good. ^__^

To elaborate on jefuchs: GNOME has a standard panel applet called "Kill Window" or "Force Quit Window" or "Force Kill" (if that isn't its name, it should be - my Star Wars-fu is simply trembling at that one) or something (I'm not at my Ubuntu machine right now - silly me). Add it and it does the same thing, though I'd bet it uses even less RAM than this one.

I have been using 'Kill Process' for this purpose for years, might give this a try though....

@glaeven: what does ctrl+alt+del do? never use that any more, i found and replaced my routine to ctrl+shift+esc, found it gets you straight to taskman instead of that log off box on network computers

'Kill' comes to Windows... good, good. I use Excel 2007 to edit intranet-based documents and it crashes all the time and sometimes ending the process doesn't do the trick; this should be handy. Thanks.

or you can upgrade ur taskman to process explorer and gain the ability to kill off apps through that, just as easy, and allows you to see what the odd processes like smss.exe are actually used for

This has been available in X Windows on 'nix for as long as I can remember.

I've always used Executor and Nircmd, for the "kill X" function.
I loves it :3

I have mapped ctrl+alt+del in fluxbox to be
kill `xprop|awk '/PID/{print $3}'`
and this does exactly the same thing as the software described.

@Zepth: Sweet! I've been looking for a faster way to get to taskman. By looking I mean I've been kind of wishing for one

Or you can use AutoHotKey to do something similar. With a simple AHK script, I just hit the "Alt" key and "Right click" on my mouse, and that closes the application that's in focus.
If you want to try it out, just copy and paste the following into an AHK script and modify to your taste:
;Close shortcut
!Esc::WinClose,A
(And if you perform the command on your desktop, the standard shutdown window will appear.)

Helpful. It's a hassle to have to track down the process that I need to kill in the task manager. It's not as fast as Cmd-Q-ing in OS X, but a Ctrl-Alt-Q followed by a click is still much faster than TM.

Use an AutoHotKey script to kill the processes of the class, Or just press ALT+F4. Is this tool really a lifehack?

Ah, but half of the fun is guessing what process has your comp jammed. Sounds like fun though, I'd try it if I wasn't so lazy.

@mikkelfunck: And to add to my self, choosing a process from the custom taskmanager would show the window for that process if any.

funny - made that app 5 years ago as a student as a prove of concept on hooking. The app could identify the stalling process by clicking on the dead app window with a crosshair and then force kill it.

@kalebdf: You'd be surprised how many times even Alt+F4 doesn't work. I've made a taskkill for Alt+F4 immune processes (not really immune but sometimes they don't respond to the constant ALT+F4s or they stay in front and you can't see what you're doing in the taskmanager).
Crazy stuff... Crazy stuff.

@kalebdf: ALT+F4 instructs an application to go into its shut-down routine, it doesn't forcibly terminate the process like this would.
