iNap Wakes You Up When You Get There
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on September 23, 2008
iPhone only: iPhone application iNap uses your location-aware iPhone to set off an alarm to alert you when you're nearing your destination. Say, for example, you're riding the train to work but want to catch some shuteye on the way. Just fire up iNap, set your stop as the destination, and let iNap worry about the rest. You can tweak the alert radius to make sure you're up in plenty of time, from 0.1 to 100 miles. iNap works with any iPhone, but the results will be most accurate with an iPhone 3G. Also, you'd definitely want to make sure you've got a signal near your destination; the app obviously won't work if it can't determine where you are. iNap costs $US1 from the iTunes App Store.

Very cool idea.. but I assume it will only work when the iPhone is unlocked?

Hi Jayphen. If it's available through the iTunes App Store then you won't need an jail-breaked iPhone. Sounds like a cool idea plus I'm a chronic napper - I almost wish I took public transport so I had a reason to buy it. :)

I guess I can't use this on my drives home. Sometimes I get bored when I drive and need a little shuteye.

Holy cow. I took a train to work for the last year and a half. I would have killed to have this app. You have no idea how much it sucks to miss your stop and end up in downtown ghettoville without transportation (and late to work to boot).

I wonder how well this would work on the 2.5G phone.

Sooooo...does it work if the phone auto-locks? Or do you have to keep it unlocked and hope you don't accidentally change something with an errant hand gesture across the screen?

I wish this software had a fail-safe too, for when you are out of signal range. For example, I know my BART ride takes about 30 minutes, so maybe you could have a 'x minutes from start or x miles from destination' and it would alert by whichever came first. You could also set an alarm, but would be cool to have it all in one package.

Not to knock the app as it does look like a neat use of the location aware phone, but as far as "would have killed for"
If you're on the train everyday, and it takes 30 minutes to get to your destination, could you not just set a 25 minute countdown timer on a watch / phone?
Plus it will work in subways

This is an awesome idea. And it doesn't just have to be for sleeping. If you're driving home from work and want to order a pizza when you're 15 minutes away from the place, set this up for a place on your route home, and it'll alert you when it's time to call.

Mostly useless in NYC subways for obvious reasons.

@dangerp: I always seemed to wake up JUST as the train was pulling away from the station. I kept a PATH card just so I could catch a ride back to Newark Penn Station. In my two years of taking a train, it only happened like 3 times though.

@metaslugx: Maybe it's just me, but I sleep with a hand on my important stuff. The iphone is in my pocket with a hand over it, or in the pocket, and my bag when I'm going to class is under my legs, wrapped around one of them. I guess it also helps that I don't "sleep" so much as doze.

Also sketchy for Grand Central Terminal as illustrated in the sample screenshot - from 1 mile out you have probably been underground for a while.

Prob wouldn't work on DC metro either--which would be nice 'cause I've missed my stop while playing scrabble on my treo or the Post crossword.
Now that I am in NC, it would be nice if this would wake up drivers, based on their locations, so that they might actually use their turn signals....

@Giannicolus Jones:
You know, you can set delivery times when you order a pizza most places. Like, if I'm 6:00 I can call and say I want to get it for 7:00 and they'll just throw it in at the right time to make that happen.

Wont work here in the UK tubes...no network to begin with and if somehow some day some way we do get network coverage in the tubes (supposedly O2 is working on it), how the hell can you expect to actually sleep during rush hours where you stand sandwiched between a sea of human bodies!
Nice idea though

@chadbailey: I was thinking the same thing. But then again, I'm on Verizon, so my GPS is crippled. Never mind.
I really like the idea though. Chalk up one for the iPhone!

@johnsmith1234:
Neat app idea, although I do normally just set the timer on my iPhone to wake me up before the train's scheduled arrival. Works fine and didn't have to pay for it either.

I wonder, assuming they allow us to use cell phones on planes, if this would work while flying. I always am a bit paranoid I will fall asleep and sleep through a landing and miss getting off the plane when I am supposed to.

Missing a stop on any form on public transportation is the biggest pain in the ass.
Perfect idea, but the fact that you have to leave your screen on to drain your battery is complete bullshit.
Apple, please let apps continue to run when you lock your phone...even if it's just only the app you had open when you locked it. I'm not talking about background running, just keep what you had running running so your screen doesn't kill the battery!

Wow could I have ever used this on my bus riding days. There were times I was sooo tired, but wouldn't let myself fall asleep b/c I didn't want to wake up on the other side of town. Unfortunately my bus days were before the iPhone. Love the idea though.
I like @jsberglund's idea also. That would be a nice additonal layer of piece of mind, which is just what you're wanting to get the most out of your snooze.

You may also want to have a look at iComing, based on a similar idea, but apparently with a richer feature set.
It's for jailbroken iPhone (both EDGE and GPS). On Installer 4 and Cydia under Utilities.

@johnsmith1234: I agree with the timer idea for an everyday commute, but I think this app is great for trips you don't make that often and therefore don't know the length of. It would also be great for certain Metro systems in our nation's capital which is often plagued with delays.

@x3r0: Pandora continues to run while the phone is locked. So does the White Noise app. Are these only because they're audio? Pandora even changes songs while locked so it much be accessing 3G then. This one should be able to access the GPS.
