Use A Question Mark To Search For Files In Firefox
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 AM on September 22, 2008
The gHacks blog points out a neat trick for searching out terms with periods in them without auto-triggering an attempt to load a web site: put a question mark (?) before the term. Great for hunting down shareware executable files and pasting in dates and phone numbers separated by dots. Know a better work-around? Tell us in the comments.

Doesn't work for me. Just brings up my OpenDNS search results window.

As, bana said, this seems like "I'm feeling lucky", which I don't consider particularly useful. If you want to search something, there's always the search bar. The main difference is that you get a list of results instead of the first result of your default search engine and you can easily switch between search engines as you please.

So it's pretty much "I'm feeling lucky."

I absolutely have another way to accomplish this - one with many other additional benefits, in fact! ...it's previously mentioned CyberSearch. This addon allows you to type in exactly what you want to search for, without the need for remembering to add any otherwise unnecessary characters - you simply type in what you want to search for and it conveniently shows you the Google results, right within the "AwesomeBar."
Our friends over at CybernetNews made this great addon a little while ago, and have continued to improve it with every release! I have been impressed with it from day one, and sing its praises every chance I get!

@MengBomin: I'm feeling lucky can very often be useful. I often use that window for I'm feeling Lucky searches, but until this little trick I couldn't search for anything with a period in it. Now I can. Its got its uses, believe me.
@Jason: Thats because using OpenDNS disable's firefox's auto I'm Feeling Lucky search. Try this link [forums.opendns.com] if you'd like to be able to use this trick.

@bana:
well not sure why, but myne brings up google search results....which i prefer to getting sent on the i'm feeling lucky button (never used it)
don't see much point in this though, as it's just as easy and simple for me to hit tab instead of ? to perform a search...though it could come in useful, seeing as i like to use the searchbox as a notepad lol

@USBman: Thanks for this post! CyberSearch looks great - I 've been looking for an addon like this! :)

instead of ?, encapsulate the string with periods, slashes & everything else in double quotes and eliminate the "i'm feeling lucky" effect. it will get all the results back for you.
you can omit the quote closure to include all characters & words after the open quote.

Your picture shows the user typing this in the Google Search box, not the location bar. This might be a bit confusing to some.
And as for the tip itself, seems rather useless. Google brings up results with periods in it before results without when I just search for something normally.

i've assigned keywords to the search engines on my search box. all i do to search for anything is type in "g ", g being the keyword for google.

@chints: This is a perfect method, I've found. To search for "lifehacker" and not get automatically sent to this site, I hit ctrl+l and type "g lifehacker"...This can totally eliminate the search box!

The same thing happened to me when I tried it. I got google search results, just like if I'd hit Ctrl-K and searched in the google bar. While I like the idea of it, I'm using Ubiquity right now for searches. Wish I'd known this trick previously.
