PrintWhatYouLike Cuts Down Any Web Page For Printing
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 11:00 PM on September 19, 2008
Free printer-friendly service PrintWhatYouLike.com is a simple point-and-click element removal tool to make printing sites and pages without printer-friendly links much easier, and without any software. Paste in the URL of a site, and you'll get a left-hand sidebar that lets you click and and remove pictures, headlines, and other page elements. You can pull out the background image, isolate selected parts of the page, and even resize individual elements, all in the name of reducing ink usage and improving readability. Better still, you can copy a link to the page you've just hacked to bits, giving web site owners with popular pages a free resource for printer-friendly versions. PrintWhatYouLike.com is a free service. For more earth-saving and frugal printer tips, check out the How-To Geek's smart and easy ways to reduce printing costs.

If you use the bookmarklet described on the paged linked below, you can not only remove elements & text, but you can add your own items, too, and fully customize what you want to print, as if it were your own document:

Excellent, I have always wanted something like this. Too many sites have excess colors and banners in their "for print" versions, e.g. in a receipt or confirmation page. Thanks.

@ Nogard13: I use Image Zoom to view. If I *really* wanted to print, I'd save the pic and print it with Irfanview.

I used aardvark before but ran into several problems w/ it on a few sites.
I much prefer MYPAGE which is a similar bookmarklet. Way less buggy.
Check it out here;

I use Platypus rather than Aardvark in Firefox, it even creates Greasemonkey scripts on the fly.
Using it right now to hide the UGLY stuff in the top of the page.

@emellaich: I'm a big fan of Nuke Anything also. It includes undoing removals also. I use it all the time to take ads off of boarding passes, etc.

[Off Topic] Since the website renders content on their server side you can use the website to access pages something like an http tunnel of sorts :o)

I second the Firefox plug-in Aardvark!
Just right-click the page and "Start Aardvark" on the context-menu, and then you can isolate the sections you want to print. It's a great way of eliminating sidebars and header graphics, saving you paper, ink, and a lot of headaches.
You can even save the Aardvarked page, giving you a local edited copy you can print later at your convenience.

Wow! Thanks to lifehacker and everyone who commented and tried the site!
I apologize for the site being down. I chose to host PrintWhatYouLike on google, so it wouldn't crash under high traffic loads. Um, yea, that turned out well. Anyway, I've made some changes and now the site appears to be running a lot better.
Also, several people mentioned Aardvark. Aardvark is an excellent tool, and it works great for web development. PrintWhatYouLike takes the concepts of aardvark, and adds a whole bunch of new features specifically for printing. Features like the ability to merge multiple webpages into one document, save changes, select text, select multiple elements on a page, adjust the text, and the ability to make any page printer-friendly in your browser without having to install any add-ons.

Wow! Thanks to lifehacker and everyone who has commented!
I apologize for the site being down. The site is hosted on google specifically so it wouldn't go down under high traffic. Um, yeah, that worked well... But it looks like the site is mostly operational again. If you are still getting the 'quota exceeded' messages, you can try accessing the site from my laptop, [12.208.117.13:6080] at least until that melts down:)
Also, Aardvark is an excellent tool, and it definitely pioneered some of the ideas used by PrintWhatYouLike.com. Pwyl took the aardvark concept and added a whole bunch of new stuff, like the ability to save your changes, merge pages together, select text, select multiple elements, adjust how the text looks, and best of all, the ability to make site a printer friendly in your browser without having to install any add-ons.

I've been using Platypus in Firefox, and it's been VERY useful and reliable. Stripping out unwanted content in order to print is so easy and really saves ink and paper.

@Ted Avery:
You are the man with this one. I just set that string as a bookmark and it works wonderfully. Pull up the bookmark to begin editing the page and simply reload to get back to the original.
Nice tip, friend.
