Eric's Movie Database Whips Your Collection Into Shape With IMDb
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:30 PM on September 18, 2008
Windows only: Free home movie organiser Eric's Movie Database (EMDb) is a fast and simple solution for those looking to keep tabs on their DVDs, VHS tapes, or other home movies. Using IMDb as its primary data gatherer, you simply type in the name of your film, confirm which flick it is, and you've got all the standard information filled out. There's a powerful seach function for truly substantial collections, and a button to track who you've got your flicks loaned out to. Mac users looking to organize more than just DVDs should try Delicious Library; for Windows users just looking to give their friends a list of what they've got, EMDb is probably the most time-efficient solution. Eric's Movie Database is a free download for Windows systems only.

Would love to know of a manager that can include the file. i.e. a database that links to a soft copy file, stored on my computer (for backup purposes) with the same functionality of EMDB. Even better would be something that can be used over the internet (Linux would be awesome!)

I use videodb to keep track of my movie collection. It's a web application and will therefore work in Linux too. Check sourceforge, it's a open source project.

I like the movie organizer I have. It's called Windows Explorer. :)

I have used the somewhat similar web app DVD Aficionado [www.dvdaf.com] for years. Would work for Linux.

I've used Ant Movie Catalog for this for quite a while. [www.antp.be]

XBMC Media Companion will scan harddrives for divx/.avi files (also DVD files I think), and search imdb for the movie info. It will save a .tbn, a .nfo, and a fanart.jpg (from meligrove.com) along with your video files. It also has a media player incorporated.

@Pacha:
Try Libra... I use it and launch my divx right from its interface.

Anyone know if EMDB will import from a current list of movies I own? Or would I have to type them all in from scratch? I saw various Export functions on the website, but the only import they mention is from IMDB. I'm thinking of importing from a CSV list from my current (excel) database.

Anyone know of a web service or application that will allow you to simply catalog films you've seen, plan to see, etc., as well as write short reviews/journals? Basically, I'm looking for Good Reads, only for films.

@Emerick: Thx for the recommendation, i find how to launch the movies from the EMDB it self, need to click Location on the bottom.

i tried it, looks pretty cool. The only annoying thing is the default resolution lists PAL DVD, but all my settings say it's USA, so it should be NTSC.

I discovered Personal Video Database recently - it scans hard drives for .avi or other video files, grabs info from IMDB (or lots of other sites), and works with movies and TV. Also when you press the play button it works with whatever media player you have. [www.videodb.info]

I recently started using GCStar [[www.gcstar.org]] for Linux. It queries IMDb for details, you can associate a movie file with each entry, and play it from the program. It also contains options for choosing which media player to use when launching, and lending tracker options.
I have my machine set up to rip isos using k9copy, keep track of them with GCStar, and run them with VLC. It's a little bit of a pain to get the whole thing set up, and your library ripped, but once it's up, it works perfectly.

Has anyone tried the freeware Movienizer at [www.maniactools.com] ? After trying quite a few other one's I chose this one because it separates the movies alphabetically A - Z in separate lists instead of one huge long one such as used by Eric's Movie Database. In fact I even tried DVD Profiler and deleted it for Movienizer. Much of the info downloaded from IMDB is clickable - whether it be the movie or the actors - which helps in locating information on other movies whose name you may have forgotten. Besides Eric's I have tried about 5 other freeware's but Movienizer hit the spot for me.

This program is great, but since it relies on IMDb, it leaves a lot to be desired for cataloging TV Series DVDs. Does anyone know a Windows alternative to this that would have similar tags and organization possibilities but better handling for season sets of TV series? I use DVDaf.com right now but would like something with more functionality. many thanks!
