Customise Windows' Start Menu Folders
Posted by Gina Trapani at 11:30 PM on September 15, 2008

Windows only: By default Windows includes your "My Pictures" and "My Music" folders in the Start Menu's right column, but you can change those defaults to folders you use more often using two handy VB scripts. The replace My Pictures VB script and the replace My Music VB script each do just that. Right-click each link to save those files to your PC, then double-click to run them. Enter the new path you want to appear in your Start Menu (even a network location, like to a shared music folder), and then you have to log off and back into your PC to see your changes. Behind the scenes, these scripts are editing your registry; if that idea makes you nervous—and it should—then do pass. I tested both successfully on my machine. These scripts are part of a huge library of Windows VB script tweaks; have a look at some more at the Kelly's Korner web site using the link below. For more fun with useful VB scripts, see the screensaver away message.

Or just remap them using TweakUI (My Computer>Special Folders)???
Then the icons stay the same but the location is changed, much nicer if you ask me!!

@LifesSweetDrug: I agree.

I'd be more inclined to add similar functionalities through the 'Pin To Start Menu' option.
Although it has always irked me that 'My Videos' isn't in that XP sidebar alongside music and pictures.

It would be nice if you can add them, as well as keeping your picture and music fold on there.

I was looking for ages for a method to add custom folders to the start menu's right hand side. But to be honest, I'm not really using the start menu any more. Quick start and Launchy make everything I use more accessible.

TweakUI is the way to go for general users.
Scripting to change UI in the business world has gone on for years. ActiveDir + scripting = controlled user experiance.
It's nice to see that home users are starting to get into it. But TweakUI is the way to go for the novice.

@L.Rawlins: 'Pin to Start Menu' is nice, but if you already have a ton of things pinned there, and tons of blank space over on the right hand side of your start menu, it would be nice to be able to use that area as well.

It is surprising that even Vista doesn't have a My Videos section on the start menu. I would use that much more than My Pictures or My Music (although I wouldn't want to replace those either).

Thanks for the TweakUI trick, didn't know that was possible.

Just be careful. If you have programs which rely on the location of the My Music and My Pictures folders (such as iTunes), then changing the location will cause these programs to look in the new folder for the data they require. If it's not there, then you'll lose the changes (in iTunes's case, you'll lose your library, although not the actual files themselves). You can always run the script again to reset the path again (such as "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music) to restore the data, because the files themselves still exist.

Short offtopic question as I see it in the screenshot. What does the function "Set video mode to OpenGL" in VLC do?
In my start menu this option appears sometimes without me ever having used it.

@XNet: VLC draws video using DirectX on the Windows platform by default. If you'd rather have it output to OpenGL (maybe 'cos you're a fan, or your card has better OpenGL support, however unlikely that may be under Windows, or if you want to use VLC's output within an app of your own design that uses OpenGL)

Perfect! ^__^ Thank you SO much Gina! ^__^
Since I never use the default "My ..." folders on XP (or Vista), I can replace "My Pictures" and "My Music" with something useful on my XP system. ^__^
I have found it extremely useful to keep all of my videos, music, and files on external drives.
If one of my operating systems "blows a fuse" for some reason, it is simply "pull the plug" and I am ready to reinstall. ^__^

I don't want to replace Pictures or Music, I like those. I want to add other important stuff. If i could change 'Games' (useless) to something else like u can easily do with Music and Pictures, that would be awesome.
Also, for Vista.

That site is useful for 'one-offs' but if you REALLY want to tweak your system then you need to use the granddaddy of all tweakers: [www.x-setup.net]

I've been looking for this a long time! Though, is there any way those icons can be changed in vista?

Why not make a VB script to replace Set Program Access and Default, Search, Help and Support, and Dell Solution Center?

What about something like this for Vista?
I can set which of those menus display, but I can't change them from the 6 defaults. . . and "DOWNLOADS" is conspicuously missing.

I use Classic Mode. I just add whatever folders I want to the Start Menu folder.
I just wish installation programs were smart enough to let me pick one of my custom folders instead of Programs.

Is it possible to do something like this but in the 'open/save' dialog window? I have a specific folder which I access often and it's pretty annoying to have to navigate to it each time I want to save something to it or open a file from it. Thanks guys I would appreciate any help :D

Is there a way to undo this? I did it thinking I didn't use those folders anyway, but it turns out I do: my itunes library is located there, and now itunes is empty...I want my playlists/podcasts/etc. back! Help?

Could someone tell me how to undo this script. I ran it and now my computer seems to be running really, really, really slowly. I am running Windows XP

The last time I enabled the Windows Scripting Host (WSH), my machine got pwned in less than a day. And by some really obscure worm too (VBS/Ritart), which had no explicit removal tool - only 'prevention' (avast, Spybot, AAW) which ironically didn't work :(
Never running VB scripts again - the bad outweighs the good for me..
