@TheGreyFox: That's where I advanced my Photoshop skills with his "Down and Dirty Tricks" book. What I loved is that it wasn't boring. You could take any project in the book and he'd walk you through from step one.

The Site is down again- was able to get on it earlier but that was about the time this Post only had around 1,000 Views. The Site this Post links to does look VERY cool and I will most def check it out in further detail after the "LHing" dies down a bit but here is the link for the tutorial that THEY link to:
Pretty basic stuff initially but looks good for a refresher if you already know what your doing but for those of us just getting started w/ PhotoShop (ahem, *cough* me *cough*) it is worth checking out.

Ok as a photoshop user of 4 years I'm going to be so bold as to say in one week maybe maybe you could get a handle on the pen tool if you where exceptionally bright.
Photoshop is definitely about the journey forget a quick fix.
Highly recommend Lynda.com and Total training for visual thinkers.

Most of Lifehacker's readers have no business using Photoshop. Go download GIMP or Paint.NET.

@ CIM: I don't get head or tails of GIMP, but I don't get anything fancier than MS Paint, either. There's more tutorials of PS, though; if you can point me in the direction of GIMP tutorials that the average n00b can understand, I'd definitely use FOSS over overpriced Adobe software.
BTW, my bud just burned me a copy of his CS3 suite for my birthday. I was mainly going to use After Effects, but we'll see about PS.

I always suggest to friends and clients, that they go to the iTunes Store -- in the search box, type in photoshop and hit the PODCASTS - SHOW ALL results. Then you will see all of the FREE podcasts available for learning things in Photoshop.
How much easier can it be? :)

If it takes you 1 week to learn what that tutorial teaches you, then PS isn't going to be your forte and what it shows you is far from mastery.
Figuring this stuff out is mastery:

@Labot2001: Try Paint.NET ( [www.getpaint.net] ); it's still free, and the interface is much, much more intuitive than GIMP (mostly because the more-advanced stuff stays hidden until you need it).
I still have a hard time with GIMP, and I'm an intermediate/advanced Photoshop user!
As for the site, I'll definitely have to bookmark this for my roommate, who's just learning Photoshop.

And after your PS project looks great, turn it in to a website easily with PSD2cssOnline.

It's just not possible to learn PS quickly. The only way to get good is to play around and experiment. Tutorials are initially good but after the basic concepts and tools have been mastered the only way is experimentation. There are invariably 3 or 4 ways to accomplish the same thing in photoshop so the most important thing to understand is that there is no definitive way, which is why in my opinion tutorials just don't cut it.
