Get Album Covers in iTunes' List View
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:00 AM on September 13, 2008
One watchful Lifehacker reader noticed a small arrow button in the newly-released iTunes 8. Click it in the left-most column of list view, and album art pops out, resize-able by widening or shrinking the column. Cool find, and it makes for a nice compromise between the helpful data in list view and pretty pictures of CoverFlow. Haven't downloaded iTunes 8 yet? Check out other features and screenshots in Adam's first look at iTunes 8. Thanks Runar!

@Sanjo: thanks for all your help.
This is a good way to spot issues with songs from the same album that iTunes feels are different albums. Thanks.

It can also be toggled via Ctrl-G (and presumably Cmd-G on Mac version), or via the View menu as "Show Artwork Column".
Not really a hidden feature by any stretch of the means.

Cool, thanks. I was starting to miss album view, while the new grid view is ok, it's annoying when you've got a playlist that just consists of different albums.

Its new to me....
Interesting that you can also 'rate' and album.

@Sanjo: I guess our mileages vary, as they so often do ;) I didn't notice it until that reader emailed us.

Wasn't this available in iTunes 7 as "Album View" or something like that?

@Merricat: Ed Bott just wrote an article indicating a fix. Important read for anybody using iTunes 8 on Vista:

Oh come on. This was -so- easy to find out yourself.
Did you know there's back arrows on -all- the views now with the little squares?
Or that you can resize them accordingly?
Or mouse-over provides samples of what's in them?
Or double clicking them goes into the list of what's in that genre?
*sigh* ):

Careful updating to iTunes 8 if you are on Vista.

It looks as if some people are having problems with iTunes actually bringing their computer down after upgrading and plugging in their iPod/Phone

Have they fixed this issue yet:

Those songs have nothing in the 'Album' part of the ID3. (If don't have the whole album, I don't want any ID3 info on there. Makes it easier to find the songs). My iPhone can sort them out fine, so does Media Player, but the way iTunes displays them is retarded.

foobar can do this too. actually, it can put the album art wherever you decide it should go. all for a fraction of the RAM that iTunes consumes. and without running several additional, superfluous process in the background. and it can synch your music library with your ipod too!
but alas, it doesn't let you connect to its online store and let you buy DRM-infected music...

People still use iTunes? Are they able to run any other programs on their computer at the same time?

@Nate:
You could rate an album before with Album view. This is nothing new.

Yeah my favourite view is coverflow with the list shown beneath it. Get a nice view of the art but still have a nice big list of songs.

I'm sure we all would have figured this out eventually, but sometimes it's nice to have someone point out the obvious.

I hadn't noticed it yet, so thanks for the tip.
By the way, I was wondering about those arrows to the iTunes store, when a song is selected. I didn't have these in 7, I think there was an option to turn them off, but I can't find it in 8. Is it just gone or does anyone know where it is?

Awesome! I was wondering where that feature went - and it is better than before with resize!

Wtf, they ruined this feature for me in 8. What is with the giant blank spaces in shorter albums?

I'm so glad that Apple removed the ability to mute iTunes by right clicking it from the dock and choosing "Mute"
No wait, no I'm not. :(
Why would they take that out?
