The Perfect Sunday Morning Bloody Mary
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 12:00 AM on September 8, 2008

The problem with Saturday night is Sunday morning. Yes, I'm talking about the hangover. I'm talking about fuzz in your mouth and ringing in your ears. I'm talking about that "did I really say that?" feeling and that "OMFG, I did" reaction. The solution to Sunday morning (or at least those Sunday mornings that start like this) is the perfect Bloody Mary. Photo by cote.
The Cup of Ice Part
First, get a large cup. A silo cup will suffice. Something tall. Give me 12 ounces or give me death.
Second, fill the glass with ice. You don't have to go all the way. 3/4 full is fine. Ice is a good thing. It soothes. It cures dragon breath. Photo by Brooks Elliott.
The Vodka Part
Third, fill your cup one-third of the way full with vodka. Any vodka will do. Allow me to elaborate. Vodka, like any fine liquor, has its connoisseurs. There is a time and a place for Kettle One and Belvedere. This is neither the time nor the place. Your vodka is about to mixed with all kinds of crazy stuff. You wouldn't want to waste the good stuff on a Bloody. Good vodka does not make a good Bloody. That said, there is an art to Bloody Mary vodka. Making homemade peppered vodka starts with Vitamin Water.
The Homemade Peppered Vodka Part
Fill an empty plastic container with Skyy or Monopolawa or any sub-standard imported vodka you can find.
Dump in a handful of whole peppercorns. Then seal the container and stick it in the freezer for two weeks. The vodka will become infused with the peppercorn and the result is an alarmingly drinkable spicy beverage. Alone, this concoction makes for good late night sipping vodka.
Early in the morning, self-peppered vodka simple serves as a reminder that you can spoil your vices. It's never a bad idea to class-up your morning routine. Photo by pgoyette.
The Tomato Part

Now that you've got the vodka, you need the tomato juice. Here I'm strict. Never use Bloody Mary mix. Never. A mix will suffice if your mother-in-law gets too demanding. But only in a pinch. For people you care about, presumably you, never use a mix. Instead walk on down to the supermarket and pick up a can or two of V8. Some people use spicy V8. I think that's fine too. I prefer V8 to regular tomato juice because it has a nicer, more drinkable flavor. As a last resort (if you can't find tomato juice or V8) then open up a can of whole peeled tomatoes and strain it for the juice. You don't need to blend the tomatoes. Chop them up for some salsa later in the day. Photo by xamesm.
Fill the cup nearly full with your tomato juice of choice.
The Tabasco Part
For a 12-oz. cup I'll do about 10-15 shakes of the tabasco bottle. Yes, even with the peppered-vodka. The thing is, peppered vodka gets in you in the back of the throat. It's more subtle and takes a while to have the heat show up. Tabasco, on the other hand, hits you right up front and clears those sinuses on contact. The sign of a good Bloody Mary is how it turns your clammy, hangover sweats into heat sweats on the first sip. We want to clear your pores with this stuff. Sweat is good.
The Black Stuff
Traditionally, you want Worcestershire sauce. Alternatively, soy sauce. I like the former because it's a bit tangier. Soy sauce is good in its own right but adds a little more salt content to the drink if you ask me. Salt ain't all bad though, so I'll leave that one up to you. (Incidentally, this is the step I leave out when I'm making Bloody's for my wife. She hates both.)
The Something to Chew On Part
Add a spoonful of horseradish. Take the creamy horseradish that's in the fridge and put it to use more than once a year. Drop a teaspoon in after the black stuff. Then, mix vigorously. Shake it, if you want, but there's no need to dirty a shaker. Instead, take that horseradish spoon and stir.
The Spices Part
Last, you want to top you drink with spices. I generally top mine with garlic salt and ground pepper. That's it. I don't mix those in usually either. I find that sipping "through" the spices lends a certain weight to the spices you don't get when you just mix them all together. Leave those guys resting on top and you'll see what I mean.
Notable Omissions
Celery stalk. Great if you have one. (I never do.)

Lime. Big fan of lime in my Mexican beers. Love limes over fish tacos. Lime up some seltzer water, please. Gin and tonic, with lime only. But, please, please, please do not put a lime anywhere near my Bloody. It's a dealbreaker. Photo by flm.
Notable Variations

Instead of horseradish, try Dijon mustard. You read that correctly. Dijon is the new hotness. Use a teaspoon or tablespoon since it's a little lighter than horseradish. Dijon has a smoother texture too, but some people aren't mustard people, which I understand completely. Ask before serving. Photo by wordridden.
Spicy pickle, spicy green bean, spicy okra, spicy asparagus. All of these are welcome Bloody Mary garnishes. If it can be pickled chances are it will be fine in your Bloody Mary. Unless it's pickled lime. Yuck.
The Sunday Morning Part
When you've got your drink set, open up the curtains, let a breeze flow through the place. Take your place on the couch, put on some Velvet Underground and let Sunday work its magic. Think about last night, but with a Bloody Mary in hand, don't regret it.
Now, go ahead and share your own variations on the perfect Bloody Mary in the comments.

Oh, and you should add pickled green beans to the Mary. Those are good.

Remarkably similar to my recipe (spicy v8, etc), except I use celery salt instead of garlic salt and pass on the tobasco. I even do the not-mixed-in-pepper part.
Probably related - now I'm dying for one!

This doesn't seem like a very good idea.
Booze on top of more booze, plus stuff that could upset the stomach - and tomato juice is acidic, not something good for a sour stomach. If anything this will probably make you feel worse or too drunk to care you feel like crap.

Try a dash of soy sauce (but with a light hand, otherwise it cocks it up by being far too salty) and a few jalapeno seeds in lieu of the horseradish. That'll force you to sip slowly.
And try as I might, I cannot condone your liberal use of ice.

Nice read but terrible idea. Drinking to relieve a hangover is the fastest way to becoming an alcoholic. I recommend going to the pool and swimming a little - that always relieves my hangovers. Also, just stick to the basics: drink a pint of water before you go to bed.

I've never been a bloody mary drinker, so it's no wonder I got lost a little at the pepper-corn vodka. You never said how much to put in?! Though I guess it's okay to wing it. Luckily I just can't drink "like that" anymore!!

You've got your formula all wrong...V8? Yuck.
Here's what you do (ala Vickery's in Charleston, SC)
Use Clamato as the base
Pour in a lot of Choulula Hot Sauce
Add pepper, celery salt
Garnish with several Krinos brand pepperocinis and a lemon.
If it isn't spicy enough, dump more Cholula!
Enjoy like none other.

Building this concoction sounds all little overwhelming for a hangover morning, so I suggest a practice run before you are actually hungover. This way you also have all the ingredients ready and there is no need to go the store when you feel like the living dead--and look the part, too. A Bloody Mary is the perfect BEFORE you go to brunch drink, I think. Gets you already primed for good conversation and dish. Naturally, you continue with the Bloody Marys at brunch.
To avoid the worse feelings of a hangover, I am with Jorenbail, you should always drink as much water as you can handle before going to bed. It only takes a few minutes and the payoff is so worth it. This way while you sleep your body has the main ingredient that you discharged during your drinking binge, so it reduces your recovery period and suffering significantly, I have found. It's a simple formula water out, water in--all good.
And most importantly to avoid the hangover in the first place, remember the old college adage: beer before liquor, never been sicker; liquor before beer, never fear." This is actually true statement, as studies have shown, so follow is wisely. Wine fits in there somewhere, but I don't know where.
Cheers!

why was the vitamin water mentioned? i don't see it having a point. it is best to keep alcohol-even for a short period of time-in glass. it can affect the flavour as the plastic chemicals leach out into it. that also affects your health.
i think it funny how you juxtaposed the picture of a frat party beer cup next to the one of gourmet mustard. it's kinda funny actually. but i love the mustard picture. i'm a fan of grainy mustard.. it's actually making me want to go and get some!
here in canada we make caesars. i'm not one for caesars or bloody mary's but i'd take a caesar over a bloody mary any day. the only difference is we use clamato instead of plain tomato juice, which is tomato juice with clam juice (and maybe some spices). i'm not a fan of clamato much either but it tastes a bit better than plain tomato juice in a caesar. i imagine v8 wouldn't be so bad.
isn't kettle one in the same price range as absolut? i didn't think those were fancy, i just thought that that price range was the bare minimum. now it would've been different to say grey goose for example, as the spices would totally overshadow the vodka's taste and smoothness and it would be a waste of grey goose. i think vodkas in the kettle one price range would be just fine.. i'm somewhat of a vodka connoisseur and i can't believe you mentioned kettle one as fine vodka.. lol. that's like saying absolut is... i mean, it's a bit pricier than standard bar rail vodka but it's nothing to write home about.

First off...Some people need to take the stick out. Having a lone cocktail after a night of drinking isn't going to make anyone an alcoholic.
That said until a year ago I had never been a Bloody Mary drinker. Since then I've become quite a connoisseur. This page is an EXCELLENT reference to making one. Great suggestion on infusing the vodka...never thought to do it. Good for perusing the papers or a bracer for the coming football games. I'm also a big fan of the pickle in it...I always add a couple extras for munching.
Now for some Buffett...
"Squalls out on the gulf stream
Big storm's comin' soon
I passed out in my hammock
And God I slept 'til way past noon
Stood up and tried to focus
I hoped I wouldn't have to look far
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary
So I stumbled next door to the bar"

I tended bar for 5 years, and spent nearly every sunday morning trying to perfect the Bloody Mary. A few notes:
A little A-1 Steak Sauce goes along way.
If you're feeling really fancy, pour the whole concoction into a chilled glass with a rim of sea salt, crushed red peppers and cajun seasoning.
Sometimes I like to float a bit of Guinness on top. Does a body good.

Obviously, boozing on top of booze is not a great idea. I can't drink a bloody mary on top of a hangover. I go for the high-protein, lots of water cure. BUT, a good bloody has its moments....though I must say the only good horseradish is Gold's. What we have available here in Europe (NOT that creamy sauce stuff, god no...try the stuff pickled in vinegar) is a sad second best. I've tried bringing Gold's back from the US, but even stored in the fridge it only lasts a couple of months, and I just can't drink that much ( in the am, I mean) to make it worthwhile bringing it here to Spain.
what I'd like to know is, does anyone out there have good recipes for non sweet cocktails? I usually only drink wine (I don't like beer) and I hate sugary drinks. I read once about a cocktail with tomato juice, beer, tequila, lime and cilantro. Have Googled it to death and can't find the recipe. Anybody?

The best hangover cure for me? A good Bloody Mary along with a full English breakfast. Nothing like grease and fat to soak up the alcohol and cut through the hangover. (The Brits have had this hangover thing down for a good while.)

As for all you people whining about this making you an alcoholic. I'm pretty sure that the occasional Bloody Mary isn't going push someone over the edge if they weren't going there already. Plus, a Bloody Mary is a CLASSIC with scrambled eggs, buttered toast and a thick Sunday paper, even if you aren't hungover.
That said, if I AM hungover, I force myself to go for a run and bring along a massive bottle of Gatorade. It's AGONIZING for the first 15 minutes but you feel great after 30. And it revs up your metabolism for a hearty brunch and that Bloody Mary.

Second to all those who mention the water. I think the water route is the best preventative measure to reduce the hangover. I wish I could make a good bloody mary, but I tend to mess it up. Meh... The LAST thing I'd want if I were hungover would be something like this. I like the Excedrin + Gatorade + greasy scrambled eggs route, myself.
Then again, I think the last time I was hungover was college. I just don't see the point of drinking yourself stupid.
Btw.. To the people who think this would lead to people becoming alcoholics, I'm not so sure of that. I know plenty of people who probably could have been considered alcoholics while in college, but have become responsible adults after graduation.

Instead of or in addition to bitters, a few fingers of a really strong, dark (NOT SWEET - aka no Guinness) beer is a wonderful addition.
As for how a bloody mary works - it replaces the salts in your body, anesthetizes you a bit (but not too much - otherwise you just ask for a new hangover), and makes you sweat (gets rid of some of the nastiness built up). One of the worst things you can do is go to sleep without enough water and minerals in our body. It is better to just stay awake in that case. If you stay awake, you will keep drinking and eating - which will keep your body leveled off, and decreases the likelihood of a hangover. Almost impossible to get a hangover from being drunk in the morning. Very easy to get a hangover when you go dormant in the evening (sleep) and wake up without having properly cared for your body.
As for alcohol in the morning making you into an Alcoholic - go tell that the Bavarians. You can't start your morning right, there (ok, in a traditional breakfast), without drinking a weissbeir.
@mitchel_stevens: You can't stand bad vodka. Which most vodka in America is, bad. I can't stand it either. Finding good vodka is just so difficult here. Although, Ciroc is hands down my favorite Vodka imported into my State. Silly State laws really limit what you can find :(.

Ok, as we all should know by now, the perfect bloody mary is like the perfect mate - different for everyone. So, with that in mind, my own variation - Mary, Queen of Scots:
Tall glass full of ice
2-4 oz. Johnny Walker Red, Famous Grouse, or other mid-shelf Scotch
Several dashes Lea and Perrins Worcestershire (accept no substitutes!)
Several dashes Tabasco - regular or chipotle
Horseradish to taste
V-8 juice to fill glass
Garnish:
1/4 lime
2 olives, preferably garlic stuffed
1 celery stick
2 strips bacon, fried very crisp
The Scotch and bacon give it a smoky yumminess that a standard Mary can't compete with.

Anyone who hasn't had a Bloody Mary made with Clamato should not be allowed to comment. Clamato makes the difference. For years I've been drinking all types of Bloody Marys. They all seemed to be missing something. Until I acquired this recipe from an old drunk. My brother raved about the old drunk's cocktail, but I reserved judgement.
We met the drunk at his camper. He appeared to be passed out in a well worn lounge chair. With a nudge from his wife he nodded and led us to a small shed which served as an all weather bar.
He snatched two cups, threw in a handful of ice, and proceeded to create his elixir. After dumping in some Clamato juice, he held the vodka bottle upside down and let it glug a couple of times. he continued with three or four shakes of Red Hot and Worcestershire sauce, a dash of celery salt, and a splash of pickle juice. He stirred them with a pickle spear and handed them to us. I took a long cool sip as the drunk retired to his lounge chair and was blown away. It was a perfect blend of salt, heat, and alcohol.
I have since refined the recipe to the following:
In a large glass pitcher add the following:
1/3 to 1/2 clear ice
1 quart of Clamato Juice (well shaken)
6 oz Smirnoff Vodka (I keep mine in the freezer. It feels right)
2 oz of Worcestershire Sauce (Heinz is a little thicker)
2 oz of Frank's Red Hot if you like it spicy 1 oz if you don't
Splash in about 1 oz of pickle juice
Generously shake in celery salt and stir well
Pour into a large heavy glass and garnish with pickle
(Use spicy or hot pickles if preferred.)
V-8 Marys are OK, but don't compare to Clamato. If someone doesn't like clams (me), don't tell them and make one up for them. All mixes suck and have corn syrup and other crap in them.
As far as drinking them after a hard night just back off the vodka a little bit and drink one. It is very filling. I never heard it called a Bloody Caesar. Hail Bloody Caesar!

Personally, I'm a beer guy (5-6 beers a week). But really, if you don't want a hangover, drink plenty of water like Jorenbail and captainsky mentioned. Plus, on a side note, this the 2nd "drunk" article I've seen @ Lifehacker. How about coming up with a better situation than getting drunk or getting over being drunk, please? ...maybe that last bit won't get me disemvoweled or banned.

But it IS much better with Clamato juice. Wish I could indulge.

@Triborough: I don't think that will make you drunk enough to not give a crap, but then, i don't think anybody who's seriously hung over is going to take all that trouble just to feel a little better.

I'll bet wasabi -- the real kind, not the pale imitation used in cheap Japanese restaurants -- would provide an interesting alternative to the horseradish. At this point, this is the Mythic Bloody Mary -- none shall imbibe it.

Personally, I miss the old lifehacker. :-(

@Seeräuber Jenny: Considering the mix, the real wasabi (which is grown here where I live, so I get it relatively fresh) wouldnt have much of a taste difference, especially if youre hung over, im my opinion. I feel the subtle flavors would be lost in the rest of the concoction.

To those of you who spout on about this will make you an alcoholic, stop it - LH is NOT approving the consumption of large amounts of alcohol, it's merely giving a relatively painless way of dealing with a hangover, along with how to make a "fun" drink that people typically don't use to excess (I've never met a person who sat and drank a series of bloody mary's / cesears... They seem to be a one-off type drink).
To those of you who say "Just don't drink", LH isn't saying you NEED to drink to have this, and it's not saying that this is an exclusive "Only drink this after a hangover" - it's just a very tasty social drink that, when when done correctly, can make for a great social occasion.
And to those of you with the "Take Excedrin in the morning", read up on the effects of Acetaminophen with alcohol - it may help you immediately, but it does nothing positive to your liver (Ibuprofen is just as bad, but hits your kidneys instead). A non-alcoholic alternative is Bananas before bed / in the mornings - Extremely high in B12, which helps to keep the water within your blood stream and prevent dehydration.
Lastly, if you want a cure to guarantee a quick riddance of a hangover - IV of saline solution. It's a dehydration issue, and this rapidly rehydrates the body, but who really has access to it all the time?

My BM has to have V8, vodka (I hate gin), Wor. Sauce, rimmed with celery salt, lime juice and garnished with a pickle (juice from pickle optional)
To those who say that lime juice don't belong in guacamole: sorry, but I'm from a full blood Mexican family, and we use lime juice in ours. Besides, it keeps the avocado from turning a NASTY shade of brown *yech* It's tomatoes that don't belong (they water it down)

I must recommend Sammy's Garlic Vodka for Bloody Marys. I picked this up last time I was in Estonia. It is absolutely foul by itself, but fantastic in a bloody mary.

When did hydration with water stop working for a hangover? Why even waste your time with such a gross "cure". The prep time involved and making sure you have that crap in the house is a huge waste of time. Oh wait, its so you can look chic with your bloody mary and dark sunglasses while you talk about what a killer time you had last night. urp.

First, I'm a big fan of preparing base mix in bulk: a jug of bloody mary mix ensures that you always have a spicy, wholesome refreshment on hand, whether you want the alcohol or not. Plus, making bigger batches makes it fun to experiment with whatever you have in your kitchen. A-1 sauce? Sriracha? Pesto? Peanut butter? Okay, obviously there are limits - but you get the idea. If you -must- use a mix, I recommend Demitri's.
Second, well-executed garnishes can make artwork out of an otherwise uninspired drink. In addition to celery (halved lengthwise), I'm known to toss a raw oyster or two onto a drink. For those averse to such things, however, it's better to use shrimp. For instance: try a steamed shrimp skewered with a halved cherry tomato and/or a cornichon. Or if you're feeling really adventurous (read: hung over and hungry): try garnishing your bloody with a beef satay! (trust me, it tastes better than it sounds)

@Seeräuber Jenny:
Those videos were absolutely wonderful!
I agree with Jorenbail who said going for a swim is the a very healing thing to do in the morning, no matter what ails you.
The real best cure, however, is learning to stop drinking when you have taken more from the alcohol than it has taken from you (I think that's actually a Winston Churchill quote)...

Add another vote for Clamato, something I picked up from my Canuckish brothers at the house of curling.
You just spent the night celebrating your hard-won victory in the tournament semi-finals only to awaken at 8AM Sunday morning realizing you've got about 2 hours until the final match which will likely be preceded by blaring bagpipes and a ceremonial shot of Drambuie.
A Bloody Mary/Bloody Caesar is the only course of action - the old timers in the club would blanche at the sight of you drinking Scotch before noon.
I also enjoy a Redeye every now and again, but I leave off the raw egg. That's too weird.

PICKLE JUICE. I cannot stress this enough.
It is a subtle but essential component of a delicious bloody mary.
And I'm with whoever suggested the cajun seasoning.
Cajun Bloody Mary + Andouille sausage omelet = awesome hangover brunch.

Looks way too complicated for waking up in that condition.
What works for me: 5 Tylenol, 1 Dramamine (non-drowsy), 12oz of Gatorade, followed by a 5-mile run. You sweat out all the alcohol, the Gatorade takes care of the dehydration, the Tylenol works on the headache, and the Dramamine gets rid of the nausea.
If you can't handle the run, try an 16oz beer mug with 8oz or 7up/sprite/slice, and 8oz of beer.
Of course, if you're within walking distance of a place that serves good Bloody Marys, that will work too.

NEVER USE creamy horseradish, are you guys fucking nuts?
ALways use chopped fresh horseradish. Creamy? What?
Do you stuff your burgers with bleu cheese or the salad dressing?
For serious. -10 points.

I like the mix over V8 or tomato juice, it tends to be thicker which I like.
The recipe above is good, though I typically add some pickle and/or olive juice, season salt (along side the celery salt), and some creole seasoning.
With all that, you really don't have much room for juice, so the pre-mix is nice since they're usually more flavorful and doesn't leave it with a watered down v8 taste.

Drinking Gatorade before hitting the sack helps with the dehydration. Also heard drink a bottle of water for every bottle of beer you drink during the night.

@powaking: exactly
any good sports drink will replenish the water and salts and electrolytes that you will have dpeleted ,not by drinking, but by urinating.
best advice for anyone who does go out drinking is to stop on the way home and pick up one of the big bottles (or two) of gatorade or similar and down thoise before going to sleep.
this will help your body replenish.
and since the biggest part of a hangover is the headache and muscle aches caused by dehydration, you've prevented this before it ever happens.
Science! It works bitches!

I'm usually anti-mix due to the fact that a few more dollars to make from scratch makes an infinitely better drink. That said, I did find one kind of mix that will work in a pinch for just about any drink. Here's their Bloody mix: [www.stirrings.com]
They use straight up fresh ingredients and it's not just a bunch of corn syrup and flavoring like most pre-made mixes. If you don't have the time or patience to make drinks from scratch, check out Stirrings. They also make a decent mojito mix among others.

Traditional Worcestershire Sauce is made with anchovies, though a number of vegetarian alternatives exist. Most powered sauces do not contain fish, and notable, Annie's Naturals makes a pre-mixed vegetarian version.
For those who like a bit of tang, a dash of powdered citric acid (often marketed as Sour Salt) can add a nice kick without diluting the base mixture.

Clamato. End of discussion.
The only way you can make it better is by throwing shrimp and/or crabmeat INTO the clamato and running it through a blender. Look at the bottom of any bloody mary mix bottle in New Orleans - TONS of crabmeat.

Other than the pre-bed water, gatorade, whatever (which is definitely key), the best cure for a hangover I know of is a nicely rolled joint.
