LabelLinks4Gmail Nests Labels in Gmail and Then Some
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on September 6, 2008
Firefox with Greasemonkey: The LabelLinks4Gmail Greasemonkey scripts creates nested labels in your Gmail sidebar. If the idea sounds familiar, that's probably because the previously mentioned Folders4Gmail script has been included with Better Gmail for quite some time. The main difference is that LabelLinks4Gmail soups up the sidebar so that clicking on a top level folder will reveal the contents of every label inside that folder—a feature missing from Folders4Gmail. Unfortunately the script doesn't use the same label naming structure as Folders4Gmail, so making the change isn't as smooth as it could be (in fact, it's more confusing all-around). However, if you've been dying for fuller features from the Folders4Gmail script, the LabelLinks4Gmail script is worth a look. Thanks Benjamin!

Oh man, this is JUST want I was hoping to find!! Good job!
However, for as excited as I am, I am equally confused - could someone pretty please try and explain how to set up the labels in order to make this work?! The directions given don't seem to make sense to me. I'm sure it's simple, but if you don't get it, you don't get it.

@USBman: Name a couple of labels like this:
parent/child1
parent/child2
Refresh the page.
You should now see a plus next to the "parent" label that when selected drops down to reveal the "child1" and "child2" labels.

Disregard my last post. I forgot to disable my ff extension that works that way. I'll update again if/when I figure it out though.

Ok, USBman, I got it for reals this time:
1. create a new label, let's name it "parent_label"
2. create another new label, let's name it "child_label:parent_label"
3. refresh gmail
Result: a parent/child hierarchy is available in the labels list, with a plus next to the parent "parent_label" that when clicked reveals the label "child_label".
You can add a child label to multiple parents by creating a label with a name like this: "child_label:parent_label1,parent_label2". This results in two new labels in your labels list, "parent_label1" and "parent_label2", each with the child label "child_label".
Hope that helps.

@Parapraxis:
Alternatively, you could download (or update) the Compact Lifehacker userstyle.

It doesn't seem to work properly for me, in Firefox 3.0.1 under Ubuntu Linux. I have named my labels "parent" and "child:parent". In the labels box on the left, I see "parent" with a + sign next to it, and when I click the + it expands to also show "child". When I click "child" I see everything labeled "child:parent", but when I click on "parent", I still only see conversations labeled "child:parent", but not the ones just labeled "parent".
Also now when I click any label from the sidebar, my whole Gmail page refreshes and has to load again with that blue bar that says "Loading myaddress@gmail.com...", instead of just jumping to that label like it usually does.
Any ideas?

I wonder why they chose a different folder naming method from what Google's official IMAP feature sets up. Seems like it could have easily accommodated both.

Does anybody know how to display last searches in Gmail? There used to be a Greasmonkey script but it's outdated now.

@phool: OK - after having re-read the userscript's page with your recommendation in mind, I've got it! Thank you very much for your thoughtful help!!
I think the confusion rested in the fact that the script author's description (as of the time of this posting) tried to cram too much information into too little space. He/she tried to explain how to make multiple-nested labels, before sufficiently explaining that such a thing was actually possible, or that that is what he/she was actually explaining. Directions like that need to be clear and one step at a time !!
Now the only problem I seem to have is that everytime you click on one of those labels, it seems to force Gmail to re-load before showing you the label 'contents.' Is that just me, or is that something in the script? Anyone else - you experience, please??

@USBman: Agreed! You're absolutely right, the author's instructions are too much with too little, and as a consequence they make little intuitive sense.
That refresh experience is not yours alone. I see the same, as does geekblake it seems. This might be relatively easy to remedy by reviewing the other greasemonkey label nesting scripts and editing the LabelLinks4Gmail script to refresh in the same manner they do. I'll take a look at this tonight and post here if I find an acceptable solution.

@phool: Awesome, phool - thanks!
I look forward to seeing what you come up with. The world of Greasemonkey scripts is new to me - I'm more used to dealing with Stylish and CSS tweaks. Any suggestions as to how a person might reasonably go about learning the ABCs of Greasemonkey scripts?

I love the Folders4Gmail script but there is one problem. The labels sidebar/box isn't wide enough to display some of the label names in the folders. Does anyone know a script to increase the width of the sidebar?

@Kid-A: While in the past I've messed around with that using CSS code and Stylish, I suggest you try hunting around at UserStyles.org.
Good luck! ...maybe let us know if you find one that you like?
