Zoho Docs Organises Your Writer/Sheet/Show Files
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:08 AM on September 5, 2008
Robust online office suite Zoho has added a long-overdue file management and landing page for users, making it easier to view and edit word documents, spreadsheets, and slideshows without having to flip between browser tabs. Zoho Docs lets you preview documents in tabs within the page, manage the sharing and edit rights of any file with individuals or groups, and even chat with other people editing your Zoho stuff online. The drag-and-drop-interface, collapsible folders, and even blue and white interface might seem a little familiar to users of a certain other online suite, but it's one of the few areas in which Zoho truly needed to play catch-up. Embedded below is a video demonstrating some of Zoho Docs' offerings.

I'm amazed at how similar this is to another document site that has spreadsheets, documents, and presentations, as well as a place to organize them all. If I could only remember the name of it.

Does anyone know if there's a document suite online that allows for organizing your files into folders as well as using tags?
I'm still waiting for the smart cookie that develops an offline/online app which syncs your documents on your computer with those online (including changes and etc) and allows access to them from anywhere! (I'm a little OCD)

@Zya: Hi Zya,
'Syncplicity' does exactly what you have requested. It can sync documents between many computers and here the clever part, it syncs to your Google Docs account. You make a change to your file on your hardrive, you'll see it on your google doc document. They don't support excel of PDF file yet though but apparently they are working on it. Draw backs - actually folders are not synced with Google Docs so you need to do a bit of filing online once synced. Their own online interface retains the folders but doesn't have a search engine like google (bummer). Check it out

I always thought ZOHO was one step ahead of google docs, esp google gears support.

@AndiC: True, but neither suite has the Gears support where I'd like it most: in their notebook apps. I'd love the ability to compile notebooks for offline reading, and Evernote does the trick fabulously (probably without GG), but I'd really like to have everything integrated and shared within a single suite.

I've been waiting for something like this from Zoho. I had actually started using Google Docs again for this very reason (yes, I'm that fickle). Good to see Zoho making an already good product better.

It's a Google Gears implementation of some sort. I think it was reviewed here at Lifehacker last year.
Never tried it myself, but now that Zoho is back on my radar, I might give it a poke.
