GimmeSomeTune Supercharges Your iTunes Library
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on September 4, 2008

Mac OS X only: Free iTunes add-on GimmeSomeTune automatically fetches missing album artwork, lyrics, and automatically embeds them in your music library. GimmeSomeTune runs in the background, and in addition to the metadata tools, it also supports scrobbling your music to Last.fm, universal hotkeys, iChat status updates, and even Apple Remote control. Apart from all that, GimmeSomeTune is also an excellent iTunes desktop remote, complete with a fully customisable song notification window. The donationware GimmeSomeTune is a must-have for the iTunes lover, Mac OS X only.

@johnsmith1234 - You can get the an Tiger compatible version here
I use the tiger version because I have yet to get Leopard. I really like the software. I love that most of my songs now have cover art. I really love being able to have easy access to the lyrics. I do have one problem with it. It seems to cause a short break during the first 10 seconds of playback. The break seems to correspond to the updating or fetch of the data.

Latest version Leopard only. I'm sure glad MacOS doesn't force me to buy a new operating system every couple years the way MS makes you buy a new OS every 7 years.

@cocasio
If you read my post I said the
From the page:
GimmeSomeTune can be downloaded here, it requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher (Leopard compatible, Universal Binary). An version for 10.4 is also available.
You also must be flat out screwed if you have 10.3.

found this a few weeks ago, made my own script/app to run iTunes and this at once and quit everything if either iTunes or GST was quit. you know rather than letting some background daemon run all the time

So this will fetch lyrics and artwork without having to listen to it first? Cause right now all I can make it do it fetch those things only after I listen to it. That might take a while for 9000 songs..

was that sarcasm about mac users not being "forced" into buying a new OS every several years?

Anybody want to comment on the last.fm scrobbling? I already use the older version of GimmeSomeTune as a background process to fill in lyrics and album art, but if I could also knock out iScrobbler and TotalTunes (as an iTunes controller), I'd be thrilled.
When I tried all of these different options (and CoverSutra, etc) a few months ago, the scrobbling was buggy and GimmeSomeTune wasn't as effective a controller as TotalTunes.

@petermartin
last.fm scrobbling seems fine to me, been using it for quite a while
it's not quite as a good a controller as say coversutra but that could soon change, the artwork and lyric retrieval is pretty dam good and a major feature for me as it runs only when iTunes does, just like i want it to

So far the only feature I really need and is missing is the ability to rate songs from the menu bar. I love how You Control Tunes allows me to do that, but if I can get this program to do all of that, I can consolidate YCT and Last.fm scrobbler into one program.

@cocasio: It pauses for me too... strange... I find that annoying. I like it otherwise, but I can't handle the pause. Doesn't happen on every song, so I don't think it's as simple as fetching the data.
Wish it could find the lyrics when I wasn't listening. I can't bear the pause and it seems to have to play to do the look up. Catch 22.

@Ethan Halko!:
For lyrics you will have to play each song at least once (sometimes twice :P)
but for artwork you will only have to play one song from each album, and it will automatically insert the covers for the consecutive songs.
@kseve:
This happens if you listen to anything thats indie, I can't get about 25 - 30% of the songs to have lyrics (I could do this manually, but I'm lazy)

@bmeouf: Very much.
People get upset about forced upgrades on Windows, where the desktop OS has changed once in the past 7 years (for an upgrade cost of $99), and the 7 year old version being very much compatible with all new software (save some DX10 games that wouldn't have a hope running on 7 year old computers) compared with apple which has released 4 new versions (at $139 each) in the same time frame. And changed processor architectures. And now programs won't run on computers bought a year ago.

Here's my question. How does it work with non-iTunes downloaded tracks? Last time I tried to use the fetch album art option on my large library, it deleted a lot of my album covers I had previously entered manually. This was a pain in the ass, because I have a lot of tracks.
So, any word on this?

I completely agree with you!
I am so sick of the brainwashed apple fanboys who would have said the same thing you said at the top of the comments, but without sarcasm.

A hackintosh user complaining about being "forced" to upgrade to Leopard? Damn, this is a crazy world.

@mysteron: I know genuine Apple users who also don't like the forced obsolescence.

@johnsmith1234:
with the powerpc architecture i never felt like this was an issue.
Now with intel, this forced Apple obsolescence is out of control. I've honestly started to fear buying their products at any given time because their useful shelf life is so limited.
I am slowly (but surely) becoming disenfranchised with Apple.

@thellon0:
I can see your point, however the move from Motorola chips to Intel is akin to the move from OS9 to OSX ... if we never had any phases of obsolescence we'd all be running black and white System 1 Macs and Windows 1.0

Damn. I just spent several hours hunting down artwork for all my music a couple weekends ago (one of those tasks I'd been putting off for years).

Yes, because Apple should be punished because developers choose to use the new functionality that comes with the latest version of the OS.
Sure, this didn't happen much pre-OS X, but Mac users also had fewer options back then in terms of software for the Mac. Now, we can take advantage of having a larger developer base and of being able to use software designed for *nix and in some cases (if you have an Intel Mac) even Windows.
So the software package you want requires the latest version of the operating system -- talk to your developer! (Or use different software.)
(By the way, some of us are still using the powerpc architecture -- I'm running Tiger on my eight-year old Cube. There's some software I just can't run on it, but I can still find alternatives -- or in a few cases, do without.)

I've had a couple of system crashes since I installed this. I have no proof that gimmesometune is implicated (I'm not up to poring through logs, unfortunately). Seems to happen on a couple of broken/chopped up MP3's that didn't make it through transfer from a FW. I hope it ain't this program's fault, but I'm good so far without it. Anyone else? Any good forums for this you'd suggest?

I have been using this program for over a year, and with each update both it's aesthetics and functionality get better. I live or die by my iTunes keyboard shortcuts!
