Picasa Updates, Adds Face Recognition
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on September 3, 2008
Google's Picasa is seeing updates on both the web- and desktop-based versions of the popular photo management application. The biggest new feature is coming to Picasa Web Albums in the form of people tagging, a Facebook-style tool that lets you tag faces in your photos by name and then view pictures of that person by simply searching. The difference between this and Facebook is that Google identifies all of the faces in your pictures automatically and groups together the faces that it thinks are the same, making people tagging extremely quick and easy to do. According to technology web site CNET, Google will also be releasing a new beta version of Picasa for the desktop today, the main improvements to which include a movie maker and online synchronisation of every edit of a photo. The download isn't showing up for me yet, but people tagging is live, so give it a try and let's hear what you think in the comments.

Face recognition is US-only.

Hey, awesome technology indeed. There is a Niche Social Network also doing this, My Heritage. www.myheritage.com
Have a look at the photo sharing capabilities of MyHeritage, a family oriented social networking site.
A few things that set them apart are:
1) The Pics are fully integrated with your family tree.
2) They have a more ‘open’ concept, which allows you to import photos from other web properties (such as Picasa), and export the tags back.
3) The service is available in a multitude of other languages.
Anyway, hope this adds a bit of value to your post.
Cheers.

Picasa for Mac, please. I'd actually pay, it's that good on Windoze.

It did not seem to work to well for me. But I like to take abstract pictures with unusual angles. So that might be part of the problem. I do wish flickr would add something like this.

Is this only in the Beta? Or is it in 2.7 also?

I still long for a Mac version, it's so much closer to my mindset than iPhoto or Aperture.

Face tagging doesn't always work, and it tries to tag based on people in your contacts list, which is good, but those people don't always show up for some reason. Then again, it's been crashing since it launched, so maybe they're fixing it.

That's smart! I've wished the Flickr would add this for a while now...it's the one feature that moved me from social networking skeptic to all day long addict at FB.

@gokieks: Oh, and also still can't change the default sort mode of files to anything other than date. If Picasa just added those two features, it'd be damned near perfect. As it stands, it just drives me nuts.

Still no way to move multiple folders into a collection at once, which was a deal breaker for me in Picasa 2. I'm very disappointed.
On the other hand, the new Photo Viewer seems quite nice and speedy - finally a good and free replacement for the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

The tagging of pictures isn't in Picasa 3 yet, only in the web version. I am going through over 3500 pictures and tagging, it gets tedious after a while and there are some bugs, but it is pretty spot on.

Does anyone know exactly how to do this? I have Picasa 3, and it can show me pictures with faces in them, but how do I tag the specific faces?

@bana: I think face tagging is only available in the online Picasaweb albums.
Their tool is still scanning through my albums, so I haven't been able to test it yet, but I think it is a pretty amazing breakthrough to have face recognition software (with the ability to group like pictures) freely available.

A few years ago, a website called Riya launched a similar face-recognition program. It worked pretty well, but it strained if you had too many photos in your albums. So far, this picasa versions seems pretty good, but I am now getting a bunch of server errors, so I'm guessing their recognition engine is getting hammered pretty hard right now.

Flickr is my photo album of choice, so I'm hoping this will give Yahoo the poke it needs to start making some real enhancements. Lately the service has been slow and nothing has really changed in a long time. I would have loved this feature for the 20k+ photos we have online now that are all tagged by hand.

Just finished taggin about 339 pictures.. took about 10 minutes.. but really enjoyed it actually.. well done and very impressed with the accuracy considering what you're asking it to do!
Now if they could just get their prices to Flickr level for unlimited.. I may be a migrater!

ok so there's now a link from client to webalbums. So edits on picasa client can be sync'd up to the webalbum.
Question: if you rebuild your pc, and only backup the local picasa.ini files in your pictures folder, will this resync when you reinstall picasa again on new build?
(on version 2.7 you'd lose the green 'uploaded' arrow, on a new build.)

Picasa V3 does seem to be available from outside the US at [picasa.google.com] However, more than once I've seen this come up as "page not found". Whether that's to do with load on the server, or perhaps even your language settings for your Google/Picasa login I don't know, but if you don't have any success to start with, keep trying.

At Stuck: Face tagging is only available on your Web Album, not the desktop application.
I assume a major reason Picasa 3 does not show up in the downloader yet, other than time, is that fact it is a BETA.
I had to refresh the Picasa product page a couple of times before version 3 would show.
The new sync feature from Picasa desktop to your Web Album is awesome. It's great to make changes on my desktop and have the change show up in my Web Album. I even uploaded a picture accidentally, and found I could mark it as "Block Upload" in Picasa and it removed it from my desktop.
The new blemish repair feature in Picasa Desktop works much better than I expected. The auto red-eye repair also works very well for me so far. There is a video uploader to YouTube in addition to your Web Album. You can now move folders around on your hard-drive from within Picasa. The ability to print captions and even add text to photos are nice additions.
Overall, there are a lot of nice enhancements in Picasa 3.
The face tagging on Web Albums is kind of addictive. I keep telling myself just a few more, and now have done about 1300 in my albums. It is interesting how well it works in some instances, and poorly in the next.

Hopefully they'll have face recognition in the desktop version of Picasa 3 when release as opposed to just the Web Albums.

Is it possible to use Picasa across multiple computers with this version?
Because Picasa 2 used a database to store metadata, changes made to picture/collection metadata would not be synced across computers with programs like Foldershare. This is the only thing that kept me from using Picasa.

I would love a plug-in for Aperture that does this (anyone know of anything that does this?).
Or, well, Picasa for OS X would be a nice second - but I do prefer Aperture for my uses.

Picasa still uses the database to store changes.
I have not tried it, but I think you could sync the database with a something like Microsoft's Live Mesh or FolderShare.

The face recognition works great! It's pretty good at grouping multiple pictures of the same person together.
The Picasa 3.0b link showed up last night and I had no problems downloading and installing it. Synchronization with web albums is awesome! One thing that's not happening is it's not pulling back the face tags into the desktop application.

Nothing doing on picasaweb outside the US either. It looks shinier than it did yesterday, but I can't see any new people tagging functionality (unless I'm being really thick).

I am addicted to this. 1800+ faces.
I do wish I could click on the 'face' thumbnail and see the original photo. Because a few faces do not look familiar.

The concept of 'Facetagging is hot'!
I would like to tell you that MyHeritage has something similar but:
> The pics are fully integrated with your family tree
> The concept is more open, as users can import photos (e.g. from picasa) and export the tags back
> We are also available in local languages
