Make Faux Stained Glass with Plexiglas, Paint and a Glue Gun
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:30 AM on September 1, 2008
Stained glass adds a hard-to-replicate ambiance to any room, but the stuff sure isn't cheap. One Instructables user has detailed a method for making faux stained glass with a hot glue gun, acrylic glass (also known by its trademark Plexiglas), and whatever paint colours you plan to use. As the commenters at Instructables have noted, it's not a perfect simulation, but the faux stuff can serve as a stand-in for frames missing some glass, or for trying out rough sketches (or goofier ideas) to see how they look as stained glass. While you're at the store, consider adding your own $16 DIY privacy frosting.

Wow, that sounds like the kind of thing you either go all out for (a Naruto rose window that takes up half of your house's front) or not at all.

I was looking at this project last week and thought it was a great idea that would save someone a lot of trouble. The only problems being: A) Black Glue Sticks may be hard to find and B) How do you hang it?
The hanging issue being that you could go to all that trouble and crack the plexiglass trying to attach hangers. Or you could frame it, but frames that big are hard to find and expensive.
Still, it's a very good instructable I would consider doing if I had a working glue gun and some black glue.

Will making one of these improve my chances with the ladies?

@MCWHAMMER: The same way you hang strained glass? Which is normally done with a frame. As for plexi, it isn't too hard to make a hole through it if you go slowly and tape it.

I know a few ladies that will be impressed with this. I don't recommend carrying it in your back pocket though.

@MCWHAMMER: Could you hang this like a window cling? Meaning clean the glass, then apply a squirt of cleaner then stick the smooth side against the existing glass. It should hold it to the glass when it dries. If long term is your goal, after doing that step, apply a bead of caulk around the plexi to secure it to the window and frame.

Or: here's an alternative.
Find a pic you like. Print it. Sticky it to the outside of your treferred window.
Get a tube of Lead Simulation paste, specifically for this job. If i can find it easily in Ireland, it must be available anywhere.
Squeeze the paste along the lines of your pic.
Paint in the areas with a glass paint, which will also give that nice luminous stained glass effect.
You can also use this method to colour cheap drinking glasses, bowls, vases etc. And you can use the paint to just draw a freehand picture an paint it.

@Donalb: Kind of what I did with my bedroom door, except I just used black outliner instead of lead simulation paste. It could be better, yes- for me it's good enough. :)
