Make Your Own Cardboard Cat Chaise
Posted by Gina Trapani at 1:00 AM on August 31, 2008
Cats love cardboard boxes, but they don't look nice strewn around the house—so the Evil Mad Scientists DIY site details how to assemble a hilarious cardboard box "chaise lounge" for your favourite kitty. All it takes is a few boxes and some cutting and folding, and they offer a PDF pattern download to get it just right. Once your feline's chaise is done, she'll love having a cardboard box to lounge in and you'll have a conversation-starter in your liviing room.

Hmm my theory on kitty love of boxes is that a cat loves the enclosed feeling that a box provides so this while a neat idea it probably wouldn't meet approval from my lord and masters, er i mean cats.

Is this really a lifehack? Maybe it would be if the title of the article was "Are you a lonely chick with 6 cats? Here's how to avoid boredom for 2 hours!".

@backbaydk: Ya that was called for. I am a guy, with a gf, and a cat. I will probably try this out as my cat hates the "cat-bed" I bought her a few months back. I got a small apartment (studio), so anything small and cheap that makes her (the cat) happy is cool with me. As long as its not peeing on my bed.

Just because YOU don't have cats or enjoy them doesn't mean those of us that do don't need help "hacking life" around them. My house is constantly strewn with paper bags and cardboard boxes that the cats adopted, and they enjoy them way more than any toy or structure from a store. A way to give them what they want but look slightly less like I'm completely unwilling to throw anything out is a plus in my book.
But you're probably right, only lonely chicks with 6 cats have this problem . . .

@backbaydk: Yes it's a lifehack, anything that help you get better organized and clean is a lifehack in my book.
I plan on trying this soon - if I can get cardboard that my can't kill my for touching.

@vesuvian: Yeah, unfortunately many foreign-language based words are following farther away from the typical American's comfort zone, causing the cultural ties to any other part of the world to crumble one piece at a time...

@backbaydk: That was really uncalled for. There are many guys in this world who like cats - it has nothing to do with gender, but it's just an interest, just as people of both genders may have an affection for dogs, or fish, or any other animal. Just because you don't particularly enjoy the company of cats doesn't automatically give you the preferred right to throw an uncalled-for insult at someone whose interests differ from yours.

It's a "chaise longue" ("long chair"), and not a "chaise lounge" (chair in English family "lounge"). Ahh, the cultural and linguistic ties to the French are tumbling away...

I needn't say more as there's been plenty of beating down from other commenters, so instead i'll give this article 2 paws up. I've got plenty of cardboard boxes lying around, i could make an entire matching set of chaise longues for my 8 cats. Thanx for the article Gina! :3

Yeah, my immediate thought was that it would last only about a day to my kitty's claws. Nevertheless, it's a really cute pattern. I wonder if a woodworker could make something like this. Someone who could sew could make a little cushion to go on it. Sucks that I'm not a woodworker and can't sew.

"Un-called for" seems to be the comeback of choice for many of you so I'll respond to that...
Why is it un-called for? I'm expressing an opinion. There was no swearing or insult directed at any specific person although some of the reactions have been exactly that.
It is my *opinion* that a cat chaise is not a lifehack. If this site was for a cat lifestyle website, then I'd understand it.
The reason I stated that it might only be interesting to a lonely chick with six cats was to point out the very small segment of lifehacker readers an article like this would find interesting.
The reason I stated that most males in America have been neutered is because of the handful of guys defending a cardboard cat box. I mean, c'mon - I wonder if you guys who are staying home on the weekend to make your cat a chaise lounge are also wondering why they don't have a GF.
While my comments and opinions may not be politically correct, they are most likely what a lot of people are thinking in reality.

@backbaydk: Isn't it time you got back to your NRA meeting, you gutless, simpleton-minded, sexually-confused male wannabee? Real men (and women) understand how much cats (and all creatures) gift the human race with their presence. If you can't understand that, perhaps you should stop pretending you're a Lifehacker and return to the latest issue of Maxim. Hope your acne clears up and you can get a date soon.

@backbaydk: I'd wager it's not "most likely what a lot of people are thinking in reality" but thanks for attempting to speak for "most of" the other LH readers. What ever happened to saying nothing, if you have nothing nice to say? It doesn't appeal to YOU, so just move on to the next article.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take this pattern into my workshop (omg a man who has cats AND tools!) and make a couple for our beasts. Hell, maybe I'll even SEW a pillowtop for it! All the while, fully secure in my heterosexualtiy - amazing huh?

Also on the bingo card: "I'm just saying what everyone's really thinking."

@speed1961: hey man...let's not lump in the NRA with cat-hating. I've got a concealed weapons permit and two awesome cats...which would much rather lay on my laptop (or anything else I've just put down) than this...though they do love cardboard.
and...backbaydk..."uncalled-for" is not the criticism. Your foolish stereotype is the criticism, and if you're in DC, feel free to swing by and call me neutered.

@vesuvian: it's too bad so many Americans (even Lifehacker editors) mis-spell "chaise longue". It's as if they never even realized that French existed.
The spelling is "chaise longue", as in "long chair". No "loungue" ever came into it.

This is a cool idea, as like other posters here, I have a couple cardboard boxes laying around that the cat has claimed.
One thing that comes to mind though is that this lounge is open; that is, it is something the cat sits ON, not something the cat sits IN.
Don't cats naturally feel safe and comfortable in dark, confined spaces? I always thought that was the real draw, and not simply the material the box was made of. Of course, this lounge pretty much defeats that purpose.
Any thoughts?

It seems to me that backbaydk was in violation of at least a couple of these rules, and was not nice or cordial about it. Therefore, he gets the banhammer (a common term, used extensively by Bungie among others).

@garbanzo-bean: Yeah I don't think my cat would like this very much either. She likes to be INSIDE the box, not on top of it.

@Rhayader: available to the public, as in anyone can read it. i'm not questioning the editor's rights, only her judgment. which is quite within my rights.
as for 'banhammer', i makes no difference to me how commonplace it is, the term is still inane.
and as for the rules, well i've got my own, and most people i meet are in gross violation of them. but i get off on enforcing my rules, so i don't mind :)
now, getting back on topic, i made one of these for my cat, biscuit. it's been sitting on the floor for three days now and he has yet to use it. i'll probably take it out with the trash in the morning...

This is a first time post from a new reader, and a female who found the article light and entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyed the comments by the gentlemen savvy enough to realize that most women absolutely ADORE men who are kind to animals and are secure enough to do quirky, funny things for them!
Very well done job of handling the troll, too. (wink!)
Something tells me he doesn't have a cat, or he would know that rather a lot of girls like them, and like men who like them.
DH does. ;)
