Game Key Revealer Finds the Keys for Your Games
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 1:00 AM on August 30, 2008

Windows only: If you have a game installed on your computer but have lost the original documents that came with it, you can still retrieve the product keys for safekeeping. Game Key Revealer is a small portable application that can help you recover your lost game keys.
Game Key Revealer supports more than 500 popular computer games from well known publishers like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, THQ and Lucasarts. The game key of games like The Sims 2, Call of Duty, Crysis or Far Cry can be revealed if the game is installed on the system.
Operation is as simple as running the executable, clicking "Find Games" and watching as it quickly crawls your computer retrieving all the available game keys. Game Key Revealer is a free download for Windows Only.

@EleFlameMax: The tool only works if you have the game installed with a license key. For example I have an installation of Halfe Life 2 on my computer. Somewhere between installing it and the present I lost the box and paper work so I have no idea what the license key is. This tool showed me, so now I have it saved in case I need it in the future.

No, it finds the keys you used to activate them in the first place.
One or two may say lh is becoming tpb, but I fail to see how giving free games is productive :)

Neat idea in theory -- in practice, though, the time I realize I need my long-lost Freedom Force key is usually several months AFTER I've gone and uninstalled the thing.

I...guess.....
The problem with this system is that most likely you won't realize you lost the key until you go to reinstall a game and don't have the paperwork.
It's the same problem as toilet paper. Chances are, the time that you realize you're out of toilet paper won't be while you're in the aisle at the supermarket.

Sounds helpful, might run it when I get home and save the results on a flash drive.

@Jason Fitzpatrick: Activate it on Steam and you'll never need the key again, and if you have a high speed connection, you can get rid of the disks too.

Use Steam.
No more keys or even disks to keep around.

You guys shouldn't be deleting and reinstalling software all willy nilly without making sure you have the reg keys first.

@thisisasignin: I imagine this tool combs the registry for you.
This would be handy if you are installing a new computer or what not and don't have any of your keys handy. I know there have been a few times I've had a game installed and no way to figure out the key.

I'm always cautious with this kind of tools. I wouldn't like to have my CD-key sent to a database :P

Because in truth, you purchased the key, not the program or media.

I agree, It would suck if this program also sent the keys it discovered back to a database.
Enable your firewall before using.
Maybe I will create a free app to STORE all your credit card data and other personal information so you can retrieve it if you lose the actual card.
Any takers? (Wink)

I ran it and it only picked up like 4 games.... it didnt even grab starcraft which would be nice to grab other ppls starcraft serials -- you can never have enough of them :)

Cool, I think I'll carry it on a USB key to the next LAN party I attend, and slip it in a few glowing green PC's while their owners aren't looking :)
j/k
But, I could see how this could be used for nefarious purposes.

@Ortzinator:
Steam has it's downfalls too, but it's somewhat better than the box of old cd cases, manuals or post-it notes with my game serials stuffed in my closet.

Useless. Only detects 3-4 games. I have 20ish it should detect according to the readme.
Before I ran this I scanned it with these 2 sites for you paranoids out there:
[virusscan.jotti.org]
Both sites are well worth a bookmark or even shortcut icons on your desktop.
There, that's my "Lifehacker Good Deed of the Day". :)
