Enable Self Destruct Mode on Your Windows Mobile Phone
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 5:00 AM on August 29, 2008
Although losing your mobile phone is never an enjoyable experience, it's a much worse feeling when your mobile device is carrying more than just contacts. If you're carrying things you don't want anyone else to have access to—whether it's personal information or company secrets—on your Windows Mobile device, it's a worthwhile investment of time to take a moment to set up an extra layer of insurance against data theft. If you're using a Windows Mobile device it is possible to configure your device to essentially self destruct after a set number of failed access attempts. Check out the walk through at AskTheAdmin for the details on how to turn your Windows Mobile device into a self destructing data safe.

Sprite Terminator will let you remotely lock or wipe your phone as well as use the built-in GPS to track it if it is lost or stolen.

One excellent program that will do this is Sprite Terminator.

Not only can you remotely lock or wipe your phone, but you can use the built-in GPS to track your phone if someone steals it.

It would be nice if I could simply get Active Sync to work on my Q9M. Ever since the upgrade to WinMo6 it never connects.
No help.....anywhere.

That is the coolest/funniest image I've seen on LH.

@xlerate: Try the forums here -

The Sprite program looks pretty good because you're in charge of the "When" as opposed to accidental key presses wiping your phone because you kept it in your pocket.

@xlerate: WinMo 6.0, or 6.1? I had an issue when I went to WinMo 6.1. Two things I saw fixed the issue:
1.) Delete the partnerships clean, then re-create them
2.) While attached, remove each category. then re-click them one by one
3.) Uninstall ActiveSync and install fresh

@MercuryPDX: I am going to have to see if this can be tweaked a little better - the $20 Sprite Program looks good but will it work with the power on password?

I noticed that user activated remote wipe is available from my Outlook Web Access. Not that my phone ever leaves my site, but it's good to know it's there if I need it.
'Cuz god knows I don't want my homemade furniture pr0n falling into the wrong hands. My friends couch would be humiliated.

I am fortunate not to have to worry about this issue. My T-Mobile Wing already denies me access on a regular basis, and is apparently pre-programmed to self-destruct every few days. Some very forward thinking at work there.

@asthecrowspins: Its a great HTC device have you considered flashing the real rom over the crappy Tmobile rom?

Anyone have something like this for the iPhone?

@KennyM: According to Apple's web site this will work on an iPhone if you are connecting it to an Exchange server:
IT administrators can securely manage any iPhone that contains confidential company information using remote wipe and enforced security and password policies. These device configuration and remote management capabilities allow IT departments to quickly and seamlessly deploy iPhone throughout their companies.

Yeah, the company I work for recently pushed this down through the new exchange server. They have it set up to require a strong alpha-numeric password and lock the phone after 15 min of inactivity. Just a few nights ago, after installing the official WM 6.1 update for my VZW HTC Titan, I decided to restore my Spite Backup I ran before I flashed my phone and something got all screwed up with the exchange settings on my phone. It kept giving me all these weird new password prompts. I finally got it to take one, then the first time I had to unlock it, it didn't recognize the new or old password, after eight attempts (including taking the battery out, which it counted as attempt #6 apparently), it proceeded to wipe itself, including the 4GB SDHC card which had about 3GB of data on it. I was pissed.
Word to the wise, don't run a level 3 restore from a Sprite Backup file after flashing your phone if your company has their exchange sever locked up so tight.

@JerryA: "you can use the built-in GPS to track your phone if someone steals it. "
Ha, how awesome would that be...I'd send a text message "i kno u r @ 5th and g st. return the phone or i will find u" That would freak me the hell out if I had a stolen phone.

This post is completely useless unless you're a network administrator. The first step in configuring this involves allowing some security policy which involves screwing around with the MS windows mobile software developer's kit (SDK). Yeah - we all have that lying around on our desktops and know how to use it. Then you have to hack the registry on the device itself to implement the failed-password-wipe rule.
How about something simpler... don't store anything you would not like stolen on your phone!

@virgilstar: Well um yeah dude that is exactly who it was meant for... If you want something you can deal with yourself then try the www.spritesoftware.com that JerryA mentioned above in the first comment.
@Gstein: It's actually 6 things if you look closer each item has 2 points... But who's counting (muhahhaahahaa)

I found this (if you are not using BES and their remote wipe feature)
It says it is:

SMS/Email notification on SIM Change to predefined recipient
Recover contacts from lost phone
Remote Wipe the entire device/media card
Remote LOCK & ALARM

@atomicrabbit & @AskTheAdmin:
On a Blacberry there's no need for 3rd party software for security measures like this. In the Security settings, enable a password, set the number of retries, the timeout, enable content protection and viola! ... After X incorrect attempts your BB will wipe itself! Dunno if it handles the media card too, but if it was on the device itself it's gone!
