BurnAware Free Burns CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on August 27, 2008

Windows only: BurnAware Free burns data, audio, and video CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. Since we last mentioned BurnAware, it was bought up by a software company, turned shareware, and has now made the round trip back to freeware—so if you ran into the shareware version when you tried downloading it, BurnAware Free is worth a grab. There are still shareware versions that support advanced features like simultaneous disc writing, but chances are you'll be happy with the free version. This one could come in particularly handy if and when you actually get a Blu-ray burner on your PC. BurnAware is freeware, Windows only. For other great alternatives, check out previously mentioned ImgBurn or Totally Free Burner.

No bootable cd capability = no thank you. ImgBurn remains my go to program.

Does anyone think that using newer DVD burning software like this will solve my problem of my older Nero software suddenly being unable to burn DVDs, in spite of the fact it did work a while back on different discs.

My vote is still for InfraRecorder.
Not only is it open source, but it is even available as a convenient portable version. That way, you can take your well loved and familiar software on the road with you (on any portable media - USB drives, SD cards, iPods, etc).
It records disc images, supports multi-session discs, records data, audio, DVD & dual layer DVD discs, and comes with all the other niceties that commercial software does. However, it does not yet support Blu-ray discs, but I'm sure once that becomes a bit more mainstream as a recordable media, InfraRecorder will step up.

I've been using Burnaware Free for a while and I'm satisfied with it.
@pschroeter:
Have you tried upgrading your burner's firmware? It worked for me once.

My personal favorite is CDBurnerXP. But this looks very nice and slick
Maybe this would be a good topic to poll the commenter on I would like to see what everybody is using.

@USBman: Your first InfraRecorder link points to Toucan (also a neat app). I think you meant to link to [infrarecorder.sourceforge.net]

@Melik: Also, I second you on that...
I love it's "verify" feature.

Does anyone find it awkward that Burnaware FREE can go SHAREWARE?
Why would it be called Burn-a-ware Free if it wasn't free?

I'm still in love with ImgBurn, since I read about it on Lifehacker. I was skeptical at first, but I'm very glad I downloaded it now. Maybe this will be the same.

I've got a few programs in my arsenal and my primary tool is [CDBurnerXP.se] but I do reach for [www.ImgBurn.com] sometimes, depending on what I'm up to. Happily, I discovered both great programs on Lifehacker (along with many other nuggets).
I don't really see a need for BurnAware but am intrigued by USBman's mention of the portable InfraRecorder version. Sometimes the best thing about Lifehacker is the info you gain from other commenters!
I like DaFox's suggestion about a Hive Five poll for CD burners. [Lifehacker.com] came close to treading those waters when they took care of DVD rippers a while back and I've been waiting ever since.

Does anybody know of a free burning program that allows you to burn MP3 CDs and keep the track order? I know making these things is practically a prehistoric way of listening to music, but my car's CD player can read MP3s, but has no audio input for my iPhone. Any suggestions?

i also like ImgBurn. it's free, portable, and under 2 MB. it's also the only burner that has never given me a single coaster.

@karmaghost: you can use "any" free application, just master the CD as Data and burn it as DAO (Disc At Once) or do it as i do, make an ISO of your albums compliation and then burn the image.
if you do it either ways don't forget to check long filenames in the ISO9660 settings, so that tracks don't get truncated.
apps of choice: ImgBurn or Burnatonce
however if you don't want to do it this way, there's other free methods, i just don't know if the sorting will be correct after processing, here you go:

@USBman: Haha I like, that name--"USBman"
I agree: InfraRecorder FTW! The biggest problem I had with BurnAware (and CDBurnerXP, for that matter) was that it could only sporadically burn a DVD movie image that would successfully 'boot' in my DVD player.
...And I likes me mah DVD movies...
In terms of reliability, InfraRecorder is the closest CD burning app I've found so far that rivals Nero (at least the older versions, like Nero 5, pre-bloatware).
