The Best Free Apps for Your Windows Mobile Device
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 2:00 AM on August 26, 2008

Despite the flurry of attention surrounding the iPhone and other new mobile phone platforms, Windows Mobile still has a widespread distribution and capacity for customisation. Approaching its ninth birthday, Windows Mobile has a large selection of old and new software that helps enhance the user experience and make getting things done (and sometimes goofing off) all the easier. If you're rockin' a Windows Mobile handheld, check out our favourite programs, add-ons, and tweaks for getting the most out of your Windows Mobile device.
Synchronise and Back Up Your Windows Mobile Device
You can use a Windows Mobile device without syncing it to a computer, but most likely you don't want to.
To make sure your home or work computer has the same data your handheld does, ensure you have the newest version of Microsoft Active Sync. If you're a Mac user with a Windows Mobile device check out SyncMate.
As people come to depend more and more on their mobile devices to keep them connected to the outside world and manage their contacts, tasks, and calendars it is increasingly important to have a good backup system in place. As with any kind of backup system a multi-pronged approach is best.
Free utility PIM Backup helps you back up appointments, call logs, contacts, messages, speed dials, tasks, and specified folders and files. PIM Backup is very speedy even with a large number of entries to back up. The handiest aspect of PIM Backup is its ability to back up your data to removable media. The backup on the removable flash card in my phone has saved me on many an occasion from a vacation or business trip without my contacts and customisations.
If you have Outlook on your machine, you can easily sync and back up your contacts and so forth to Outlook through Active Sync. If you're not using Outlook as your primary personal information manager there are alternatives such as syncing your Windows Mobile device to Thunderbird.
For a robust remote backup solution, Dashwire is an excellent solution. Once installed on your Windows Mobile device, Dashwire backs up your photos, videos, text messages, ringtones, bookmarks, speed dials, contacts, and call logs. Everything is accessible from the Dashwire web site and you can easily restore it to the phone.
Calendars, Contacts, and Task Lists Oh My!
We've covered how to sync and back up all those appointments and contacts, but what about displaying and working with them on the phone? Window Mobile's implementation of many basic features like displaying tasks leaves a bit to be desired.
If you practice the Getting Things Done personal productivity system, you might have found that Windows Mobile doesn't handle things like contexts and projects well out of the box. Smarter Tasks is a no nonsense task manager that was designed from the ground up to be Windows Mobile GTD task management system.
If you're not looking to contextualise your task list with GTD, but you do want to soup up Windows Mobile's lackluster default task list display, take a look at TaskPlus. TaskPlus is a today-screen plug-in that reorders the standard task interface into a more manageable and efficient one—complete with streamlined task, appointment, and important event reminders.
Replace Internet Explorer
For casual browsing, the scaled-down version of Internet Explorer that ships with Windows Mobile is sufficient. If you plan on doing anything longer than the occasional aimless surfing in a waiting room, however, you're going to want to replace Internet Explorer with a more robust browser. Opera Mobile 9.5 beta, pictured here, is packed with features missing from IE, like full-screen zoomed browsing and a smooth transition between the full-screen, desktop-emulating view and the smaller-scaled mobile view. Another worthwhile—though spartan—alternative to Internet Explorer is The Iris Browser. Sporting the zoom and tap functionality found in Opera Mobile, it has a built-in screen capture tool and a virtual mouse system for handling web pages that require a more desktop-like interaction to use.
Remote Connect To Your Desktop And Phone
One of my absolute favourite Windows Mobile applications is MyMobiler. Once you've installed it on your computer and phone, MyMobiler allows you to remotely control the phone through the Active Sync connection. MyMobiler is the answer every time you wish you could hook up a full-size keyboard and mouse to your Windows Mobile device to power through some software installations or heavy setting tweaking. In addition to remote control, MyMobiler also has remote screen capture and video casting.
Working in the opposite direction, Mobile Remote Desktop allows you to control your computer from your Windows Mobile device. While not quite as fluid of an experience as controlling a tiny screen with limited input via a big screen with more input it's still a great way to connect into your desktop from as far (a speeding train?) or near (the bathroom down the hall?) as you want to.
Tweak The Interface
Not everyone is a fan of the standard Today Screen interface that ships with Windows Mobile. Polish things up up a bit for a new look.
If you find yourself wishing that the Windows Mobile interface was more like its big brother Windows, we've got you covered. Check out this tutorial to tweak your mobile device into a more desktop like appearance.
If you're not looking to recreate the Windows experience at all, but to make the interface more simple and fingertip friendly, skin your mobile device with Pointui. Pointui radically increases the size of the icons you use to access functions on the phone and consequently lets you ditch using the tip of your fingernail to navigate and get down to some good old fashioned finger mashing.
Finally, if you have a Windows Mobile phone but visions of the iPhone keep you up at night, check out our tutorial on turning your Windows Mobile phone into a psuedo-iPhone. While some people might scoff at the idea of trying to turn a Windows Mobile phone into an iPhone, there are features on the iPhone worth emulating that make using a mobile device easier and more pleasant.
Fun And Games
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. While you might look your spouse or account manager straight in the eye and tell them that the reason you need a computer in your pocket is productivity, we know you're already thinking about what fun things you can do with it. The built-in media functionality in Windows Mobile is at best, lacking. Fortunately, The Core Pocket Media Player fills the gap in Windows Mobile playback ability. Although the project is no longer under development, it is still widely used and loved by mobile users.
What good is a mobile media player without something to watch? Fill up a flash card with media goodness courtesy of Adam's excellent tutorial on prepping DVDs for portable devices.
Customising Windows Mobile is my favourite part of using a WM phone. What customisations have you made to your phone you can't live without? Share in the comments below.

I've had to resent my XDA (Siemens 55) several times and I would like to have a backup keyfob or CD portable app where I can run active sync without having to be on my home machine. I anyone has used portable apps, you know what I mean. please email me as well or at least point me to reply

Personally, I'm glad of posts like this. I'm not an iPhone fan. My Tilt does everything I need and with a few addons, it's just as usable if not better than an iPhone IMO. I'd hate to see iPhone apps overshadow some very good programs for those of us who don't like the kool-aid.

Live Search is definitely the best thing you can get for a WinMo phone, it makes Google Maps look like bush league.
Other than that, SmartToolkit (from e-natives.com) is a great addition, but it's unstable on WM6 and the new version has an ambiguous target date.

for those tweakers looking for more for your windows mobile PDA/phone, especially if you have an HTC manufactured device, be sure to check out the forums at [www.xda-developers.com] a lot of people there have devoted plenty of time to tweaking their devices and sharing their tweaks with the community. I just recently started flashing customized firmware from there on my AT&T Tilt and while reluctant at first I now never look back!

Dashwire is the shiznit. Used it for a month, lost a phone, but thanks to Dashwire I didn't have to spend a month collecting and reentering tons of info.
Not to mention Dashwire makes photo/video blogging from your phone almost effortless. You record it and Dashwire uploads it for you. All you have to do is tag the media, and mark it public. And you can do that from the phone or from your desktop PC.
Surprised that you didn't include ceTwit in this list though. It saves a ton on sms pings.

Also another shout out to XDA-Developers, one of the best PPC sites around
Here are a couple of PPC sites I recommend:
One of the best RSS readers I've come across for WinMo, hands down. Still in beta but extremely powerful.
A great sight for WinMo apps/news/hacks - if I can't find it on XDA or on PPCGeeks, it probably doesn't exist.
Apps review site, not as big as some but very filtered. Some of the top apps here and all free.

UTILITIES:
NullKB
by: Beemer
[personales.ya.com]
The NullKB is a keyboard placeholder that prevents the PocketPC from popping up an on-screen keyboard. Use it when you are using certain external keyboards, or when controlling your PocketPC from MyMobiler. It is also good when reading documents on the device, and you don't want the keyboard to pop up.
File Dialog Changer
By: Hou Ming
[pocketpcfreewares.com]
The File Dialog Changer addresses one of the annoyances of PocketPC/Windows Mobile: You can't navigate from an application "File . . . Open" command to files that are not under the My Documents folder. Installing and enabling the File Dialog Changer changes the behavior of all getfile dialogs to include an "Up" command, and lets you navigate to any location for your files.
Remote Commander
Pebbles PDA Project
[www.pebbles.hcii.cmu.edu]
Remote Commander is like Mobile Remote Desktop or VNC Viewer for Pocket PC. It uses your ActiveSync connection (might also use TCP/IP connection) to display your connected PC's screen in miniature. Screen clicks are transmitted as mouse clicks to the PC. In addition, a "scribbler" function is included to let you draw on the PC screen using your connected device. This is good for making onscreen annotations during presentations.
DEVELOPMENT:
CSharp IDE Mobile v12
Harvey Rowson
[www.geocities.com]
A C# IDE for Windows Mobile 5 or 6 that lets you write C# programs and execute them immediately. Requires the .NET 2.0 Compact Framework, but not the SDK. The execution is interpreted, so the code is not compiled before execution. There is a handy Control Editor plug-in written by Jean Brunet that helps you create forms and controls using convenient drop-down lists and textbox inputs. The author says it is a bit limited, but very quick and easy to use. Nice for playing with C# programming on the Pocket PC.
bLADE Wiki
Dale Lane
[dalelane.co.uk]
This is a Wiki creator for the Pocket PC. Using a simple set of Wiki markups, create a wiki site on your Pocket PC. There's also a Windows desktop version, so your site can be viewed and edited from the same set of synchronized files. Wiki pages can be exported to HTML.
Pocket Freemind
[eringal.com]
Pocket Freemind is an open-source project for creating and editing Freemind mindmaps. It uses Freemind .mm files, and so the same synchronized file can be edited on the desktop PC or Pocket PC. Very useful for taking notes, organizing outlines, etc.
READERS:
HaaliReader
Mike Matsnev
[haali.cs.msu.ru]
This is a plain text reader (will also read .XML files, but I am not sure how that's supposed to work). Will also read files that are in a .ZIP archive. It's nice for reading text eBooks, and loads very quickly. Does not load the entire document, but seems to look at a segment at a time, so it is very fast, and doesn't run into file-size limitations. Remembers your recently-opened files, and saves your last location for each, so you can close and then resume reading where you left off.
MULTIMEDIA:
TCPMP Plugin for Flash Video on PPC
[sourceforge.net]
This plug-in for The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP) lets you play .FLV Flash Video such as YouTube videos. Requires TCPMP.

By the time I'm done this comment someone else will probably have mentioned one or two of these...
- MidpSSH - Java based SSH client (free). Not WM specific, but the only free one I could find that does work on WM.
- PocketNesterPlus (direct link to .cab) - NES emulator
- OS X Leopard theme
- ceTwit if you need to Twitter and don't want to use SMS
- SmartToolkit - probably my favorite free app for WM
- Vista theme - since I mentioned the OS X theme I figured it was only fair to mention this one too

GMobileSync: [rareedge.com]
Two way sync for google calendar and your phone calendar. Works great for me.
Convert it (for smartphone): [www.smartphone-freeware.com]
Great for converting units, currency, etc. Updates values online and has all the units/currencies you'll ever need. Don't know if there's a PPC version.
You can get skype for mobile(from their website) if you use that. Very handy.
vTap mobile: [www.vtap.com]
Great app made specifically for searching wikipedia and watching online videos (from numerous sites including youtube). Bypasses the need to go through a clunky mobile browser and load TCPMP flash player (which messes with my phone backlight and incoming calls everytime i use it).

My favorites that no one's mentioned yet:
BeyondPod: I was absolutely shocked at how robust this free podcast downloader is. It's at least as good as any desktop podcatcher I've tried (I've currently using Ziepod on the desktop). It includes an intuitive and well-thought out media player (using the WMP engine) and has great features.
OctroTalk: a free Jabber client. Includes a Today screen plugin.
PocketCM: a finger-friendly contact manager, including a nice SMS interface.
Web Viewer: If you'd rather not use Opera's beta browser (or pay for the stable version), Web Viewer adds tabs to Pocket IE and improves the interface.
Tiny Twitter is newer than CeTwit, and I prefer it. (also supports smartphones, Blackberry, and any Java-enabled phone)
MortPlayer Beats TCPMP hands down as an audio player (no video), with skin support, my favorite alarm function of any WM alarm application, and a unique but useful take on playlists.
I found all of the above at [freewarepocketpc.net] It's a bit more cluttered than some of the other software sites, but AFAIK it's the most comprehensive.

I have a Sprint Mogul -aka- HTC 6800, I try to only install apps that do not require desktop sync'ing... I enjoy using my WM phone as a stand-alone device.
My favorite apps are:
Dashwire (free) - although it needs to have a calendar sync added
TCPMP (free) for watching videos and watching youtube
SplashMoney ($29.95) for managing my finances (even downloads my bank transactions wirelessly from my credit union! This great software is worth purchasing, not freeware.)
MP3 Trimmer (free) for making ringtones from mp3s directly on my phone (no pc needed)
Yahoo Go (free) is a great way to access your yahoo services and add widgets like MySpace, Facebook and eBay
AI RoboForm PPC (free limited, pro avail) syncs with my desktop RoboForm for passwords and safenotes
ceTwit (free) for my twitter needs
eWallet ($29.95) for my account #s, credit card #s, and other sensitive information (very encrypted, syncs with a desktop app)
GoogleMapsMobile (free) for my mapping needs
HandyShopper (free) for creating shopping lists that sync with my girlfriend's Palm Treo (we both keep the same list that way) Alternate DL
NewsGMobile (free) for my RSS needs (syncs with NewsGator)
PIMBackup (free) for backing up my cal, contacts, etc to a microSD
PocketCaster (free) for streaming live video from my phone to people who aren't there with me (they view on their desktop in real-time!)
SiriusCE (free) for listening to my Sirius Satellite Radio
TeleNav (unlim $9.95/mo) for my GPS needs
wmTorrent ($20) for all my torrent download needs (yes, I download torrents on my phone on the go)
Zumobi (free) is a great way to view online content.

Minor editing note, ActiveSync is all one word. In windows mobile forums when your searching for an ActiveSync problem I find you have to search twice, once for Activesync and once for "Active sync" because so many people type it wrong but if you don't know to search both ways you miss half the posts.

@MercuryPDX:
If you use Thunderbird or Sunbird for your calendar, you could use an extension (link below) to sync it to google calendar; and then use GMobileSync to sync your phone calendar to google calendar. In this way google calendar acts as a middle man and offers seamless bidirectional sync to both your desktop and phone calendar, and if your phone ever gets misplaced or your computer crashes, the calendar is still maintained on google calendar. So in essence this is a bidirectional sync from thunderbird calendar to your phone calendar with built in auto-backup to google calendar.

Why use MyMoblier when it doesnt seem to offer anything more than microsoft's own...
Remote Display Control for Windows CE (works on my WM6.0pro phone)
[download.microsoft.com]
The above offers control over your windows mobile device via activesync, and is kind of useful for screenshot purposes.
RSS Hub - for all my feed needs!
Screenshots: [www.flickr.com]
Mocha FTP Server - for those times you just cant be arsed to deal with activesync and for using it with my linux install.
Google Maps - Essential for navigation especially as I have inbuilt GPS.
Opera 9.5 Beta - shame it has the notification issue however.
Tiny Twitter - Sheer awesome when it comes to tweeting and following. :)
GMobileSync - Works a treat.
My work outlook calendar syncs to google, my home outlook calendar syncs to google, my WM device calendar syncs to google, Evolution syncs to google.
My entire calendar syncing...sorted!
SMSExporter for those times you just want to back up some text messages in a nice CSV format.
MapWM [www.mapwm.com] for tracking fitness stuff, I turn it on, shove my phone in my pocket and then plot the points on google maps using the website, shows me how far I've run/cycled/walked. :)

I use a Moto Q9m running WM6 alongside my Mac, and I've had great success syncing with Missing Sync for WM6 . There's been a few bumps in the road with periodic updates breaking sync settings, but there are very few apps out there that sync iCal calenders and todos with WM6 interface, plus back up all of your contacts and SMS messages, transfer and convert media, and manage email with every sync.

Dashwire IS a cool app. However, definitely make sure you do the initial sync with the device plugged into a power source. Also, as cool as Dashwire is, it IS a memory hog. Will not install\run correctly on secondary storage card.

Pocket SNES [paqpark.nuclearfallout.net] is a Super Nintendo emulator - runs smoothly on my HTC8525. You're not going to be able to play Street Fighter II with the phone's buttons, but RPG's like Zelda or Final Fantasy work pretty well.
