Amarok 2 Beta Released
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 4:30 AM on August 26, 2008

Windows and Linux only: Amarok 2, the next version of the free, open-source media player, has just rolled out an official beta release, Nerrivik. The beta of the media manager we previewed back in June, improves memory management, overhauls the add-on scripting and metadata tracking, adds gapless playback, and streamlines the interface. Center-rail widgets still seem a little rough, but it's a usable preview of what's to come. Amarok 2 is a free download; Windows users can install it through the KDE on Windows Project, while Linux users can download the source or add the nightly build repository listed in our screenshot tour.

I am a huge fan of Amarok, but I have recently round MediaMonkey to be as good, if not better. Give it a shot on your Windows box. (note: there is a free and paid version, but the free version has plenty of power). The key is the scripting/plugin capability. Tons of free scripts and support found in the forums.

Looks quite promising. As seen from [lifehacker.com] , Amarok definitely seems to have somewhat of a loyal fanbase, and there have been a number of comments supporting it that have kept me interested. Although Songbird 0.7 was just released not too long ago, I'm looking forward to installing and testing Amarok for myself. Thanks for the update post.

Yea, can't find the download link here either. If someone could post a link or directions that would be great.

I saw that there was a version of Amarok for Windows. Is this it? The link took me to Amarok's website and the download link took me to KDE. I figured it would be among the unstable releases since it was beta (maybe not) but I couldn't find it.

oh man, I just want the native Windows build. I was playing with the nightly build of Amarok last night on Ubuntu and it's amazing.

I really love amarok for linux, but I found amarok for windows not ready for daily use yet. Another interesting media player is jajuk, but the lack of replaygain kept me from switching from foobar.

@xxdesmus: Amen to that. Amarok is one of my favorite things about Linux. I want it on my Windows box as well.

I just downloaded MediaMonkey last night to switch off Itunes and I have to say I love it. Maybe I will check this out in the future but for now I will see what the Monkey is all about.

Wasn't there supposed to be an OSX release as well?

I'm intrigued my MediaMonkey and am thinking about taking the plunge. I'm tired of the iTunes stranglehold on my music.

@ahpatel:
Totally agree with you. I love Amarok on my Linux box, but MediaMonkey is THE player for Windows. Was very disappointed to see it miss out on the recent Hive Five nominations.

It's not stable enough for Windows yet. MediaMonkey is my favorite for windows, but I'll switch as soon as Amarok is stable.

I love Amarok 1.x on Linux, and frankly I'm not liking the direction that the 2.0 interface is heading at all. The current layout is totally intuitive and spatially efficient, but the new layout looks like a lot of bloat to me. I really hope thy don't ruin a good thing...

The windows version is on the KDE for windows download page. The problem is that Amarok needs the KDE libs to run, and since Windows doesn't have it, you need to download that along with Amarok install. Just download the KDE for Windows installer, select end-user, select the server nearest to you and where you want to install KDE to, and choose the packages you want to download.
I downloaded Amarok, but the thing just freezes up on me, though that might be because I recently disconnected one of my DVD drives that was jammed. I can't play any song as of now; Amarok on windwos recognizes the track I want to play, but it freezes up and I need to end the process to continue working. I know for a fact that the song plays on Mediamonkey, iTunes, and Media Player Classic, so that's not the problem, but other than that, I have no idea. For now, Amarok isn't usable, and doesn't seem like it's alpha, or even beta quality software. Heck, I use nightlies all the time for stuff like Firefox, Songbird, and Thunderbird, and they don't freeze up on me like Amarok does.
It seems like Amarok isn't quite ready to be on Windows yet, though I have high hopes for it. Just need to wait for the next beta, I guess. Until then, I'll continue using Mediamonkey and hope that Banshee comes out on Windows soon.

@enzogt14: I think there will be soon. You could always give this a shot. Looks scary though o_O

Not to sound trollish, but is there any media player for Windows or Linux that has video support on par with iTunes? Including syncing. I frigging hate iTunes, but I'm trapped with it because of my iPod Touch. And I can't see it getting better unless Apple rewrites it to be like Safari for Windows.

Just switched to Amarok on my Ubuntu machine (SQLite install).
I found that it ran DOG SLOW for a few hours while importing my ~/music.
Scary as hell since that's only my "Currently Listening To" folder and contains 4705 individual files. The rest is in a different directory, I'm afraid to import the other directories!

The question is, is it better than Songbird?

@zwaldowski: i don't have an iPod Touch, but i use Winamp to send stuff to my iPod. i don't really like the media manager or whatever it's called, i just like going the direct route and dragging files right to it.

Thanks for the info. If it's as bad for Windows as you say, I'll just stick with foobar.

@zwaldowski: VLC is known for its wide video format support. Also try MPlayer. There are also portable versions of VLC and MPlayer so you can bring them with you. It appears Winamp is able to sync the iPod Touch. And if you are willing to pay up ($20) Dopisp will allow you to sync your iPod with Windows Media Player. You could also use a separate piece of software to manage your iPod like Ephpod.

@SaGR: Are your tracks in mp3 format or something else? I imported my 12,000-track library (which resides on a network server) into Amarok 1.4 recently after I did a fresh install of Hardy. It took about 45 minutes and I didn't notice any slowdown at all in Amarok or my PC while it worked (and I rescan my library every once in a while and it doesn't even hiccough as it goes through them).

Please stop confusing everyone! If it's not natively supported under Windows it is not a Windows download!

For the Windows/OSX ports:
Integral parts of Amarok 2 (like the Info display and Wikipedia widgets) depend on Plasma, that is rapidly being developed for KDE4 and has yet to be ported to Windows or OSX. You can test Amarok 2 on Windows, I believe, but it only plays music and is very far behind the Linux version owing to its lack of Plasma support.

@Pikadude No. 1: I do understand that. And that is why it is neither a Windows download nor relevant to the vast majority of Windows users.

@zoomZAP: They're all MP3. I don't know what's up. Like now, I just started it up and it took about 2 minutes to start then consumed 100% of one core for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Half the time it fades to gray while it does whatever it's doing. Maybe I should try reinstalling it?

@zoomZAP: Are you running it on mysql? I happened to install it the other day for another project so I just switched it to mysql mode.
I'll give it a few days and see if it makes any difference.

I was also confused, but it seams that "amarok 2 beta 1" is saved under "amarok 1.90" :D

I have read that Amarok runs better on kde than gnome, some dependencies on gnome cause problems , is this true ?
