D-Color Customises Your Desktop Icons
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on August 23, 2008
Windows only: Free Windows utility D-Shell customises your Windows desktop icons, allowing you to switch your icon's text colour, background colour, and icon layout styles. It's a very simple, lightweight app that does just a few things, but if you're a desktop tweaker, it's a great little tool. Try swapping your icons to "Tile Icons" for a nice tweak that gives your icons a more organised stack look. D-Color is freeware, Windows only.

I like desktop icons too. They help me remember programs I need to look at, turn on, or otherwise do something with. (For programs I want to try, but once installed, I get sidetracked and go off to do something else)...
good reminders for me - a kind of "to do" list

I actually still like desktop icons. I feel like I'm the only one.

I usually do not have any more than three or four at any given time. It makes me cringe when I see friends, family members or coworkers with what appears to be an explosion of application shortcuts & folders littering their desktops like heaps of trash..

Personally, I despise desktop icons. Sorry.

I wonder just how many lifehackers still have a large collection of desktop icons. It seems when the show-me-your-desktop thing went around, the best desktops were icon-free (owing to the non-cluttered look that makes such desktops look so organized).
Just thinking out loud is all....this particular program still looks interesting.

@asl4u: Me too, I use the desktop icons as a todo list, and then file documents away in My Docs.

Lolicon.
After making this connection, I never used icons again.

running this alongside iconoid is fantastic, no icons until I click the desktop and then they show up small and neatly arranged. love it.

I have zero icons on my desktop. Just an ObjectDock at the bottom.

Before you go installing this on Vista and Xp etc, it might be prudent to mention the warning on the linked site -
Below are some applications that I created a few years ago. These applications were developed before the release of Windows XP, so I am unsure about their compatibility with Windows XP SP-2.
Install at your own risk, I guess.

I remember when I actually posted on an anime forum,
"Lol! Icons."
That didn't go over well, for me anyway.
They all thought I was making fun of their... umm... Lifestyle?
I was commenting on the icons on someones desktop.

I've used D-Color for a long time, but for the sole purpose of viewing my desktop icons in a "list" format with small icons, to preserve desktop space: [img162.imageshack.us]

@VayaConQueso: Though it seems like a stretch (from icon to "lolicon"), I suppose this is what Phoshi is referring to: [en.wikipedia.org]
@Adam: you refer to D-Color as "D-Shell" in the post

There is a command line tool called "ClearIcon" can do this.

The only thing that's not good with that is it doesn't preserve the text shadow that's there by default. Any way to set it back?

Is anyone one else able to down the program via the link above? Last night I would get a "document not specified" error and now this morning I just get redirected to the hosts main page.
