Wikipanion Brings Wikipedia to Your iPhone or iPod touch
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on August 21, 2008
iPhone/iPod touch only: Free iPhone app Wikipanion searches Wikipedia through a fast, native interface. Complete with autosuggest, landscape mode, and large, readable text, Wikipanion offers a fantastic way to browse Wikipedia on-the-go. The application's bottom row of buttons provide simple navigation (back and forward), links to sections for quick navigation of large articles, and access to every link on the page, including Wikipedia category links or external links. The free Wikipanion is simple, but does exactly what it promises.

Just tried it out... font is a little too big and makes it kind of difficult to read. You can't zoom in or out and the one entry i tried out (united states) was formatted kind of strangely. A wiki search bookmarklet is probably what I'll try next.

At last! Thanks for finding this, Adam!
Typing site:en.wikipedia.org into the google search has been getting old.

I've had good luck with Wapedia ([wapedia.mobi])
It worked well on my Treo and also is great on my new iPhone. It's fast enough to work with or without 3G.

Comoki has a wikipedia webapp that i've liked for quite sometime.
IN addtion, the google app thru the itunes store allows one to choose wikipedia as it's engine.

Since day one with my 3G, I've had [mobile.wikipedia.org] bookmarked on my home screen and it's been fine. Actually, I like the site better than this app.

Excellent start, however it needs some improvement.
First, the font needs to be smaller to make reading easier.
Second, it needs to handle caching better. It does not cache images, and it only caches the current article. It would be a significant improvement if it could cache and organize several articles for offline reading--essential on an iPod Touch.
I'm biased as I am a HUGE proponent of Wiki2Touch, the offline Wikipedia reader on my Jailbroken iPod Touch. Simply put, having access to the text version of 2.5 million articles anywhere, any time is simply amazing. Yes, it eats 4GB of storage space, but come on...2.5 million articles!
Anyway, Wikipanion has huge potential if it could provide for better offline use.
That said, online, it's quick and easy to navigate.

Looks promising. I'll have to check out the google app to see how easy it is to use Wikipedia as its search engine.

Yeah since google app has wikipedia as an option (thanks for the tip@bdubs1975) I think I'll stick with that unless I hear that there is some glaring difference.

Sounds like great news for the iPhone/iTouch crew...
There's a gap though: I've had the ebooks/linux wikipedia on my 3rd Gen iPod since LH put it up here... but that project seems to have stopped, leaving all my friends with Video or Classic iPods whining about why I can't help them get wikipedia on their iPods. Does anyone know if offline wikipedia is available on newer iPods yet?? (I'm gonna want it when I upgrade too!)

Go to [en.wikipedia.7val.com]
Works on any mobile web browser, and its free!
Why is it that whenever iPhone folks figure out something that other smartphone users have been doing for years on Palm or Windows Mobile, they have to sh!t the bed over it?

Oh, good, now the Web site that demonstrates the fallibility of the "many minds are better than one" concept can be combined with the "more expensive and less capable is better" phone.
Now it will be so much easier to spot the technological ignoramuses who think that iPhone and Wikipedia are the best things ever invented.

Nice app, and the price is right, but it feels like a beta.
Using the "bookmarks" icon for anchors and the "external action" icon for "categories" are both unintuitive and confusing.
Needs increase/decrease font-size buttons (the free Shakespeare app implements this really nicely and unobtrusively) - likewise top-third/bottom-third single-tap scrolling, which this app could use.
Significant bug: doesn't transparently follow redirects for incorrect capitalization: a search for "Mick jagger" took me to a very poorly formatted redirect page that linked me to the article for "Mick Jagger" - great, guys, but if there's only one search result or only one destination, or a friggin redirect that my browser would follow automatically, don't make me click on a link.
I agree with @jbarr that better cache handling is a must.
I miss the collapsible sections in Comoki's webapp - wish they'd make a fast native app.
For now, I think [wikipedia.comoki.com] and [powerset.com] are the best Wikipedia apps for iPhone/iPod.

For iPhone/iPod touch users, Comoki's got a fantastic webapp at [wikipedia.comoki.com] I've used it since it came out, and it's absolutely excellent.

I use Wikipedia everyday to search for a lot of different topics. Wikipanion will definitely help out a lot when I want to find out information quickly on my iPhone. There are not many sites out there that compare with the amount of information that Wikipedia provides.

The Comoki app is the best I've seen so far -- the collapsible sections and zooming images are just ace. The only problem is that their server seems to be down more often than it's up.
