Send to Google Docs Opens Any Linked Document Directly in Google Docs
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on August 21, 2008
Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): The Send to Google Docs Firefox extension adds an entry to your right-click menu to send supported filetypes directly to Google Docs. The new entry is context sensitive, so it only appears when you right click supported filetypes, which include Word docs, PDFs, PowerPoint, Excel, and every Open Document format. You've been able to open Gmail attachments in Google Docs for quite a while now, but this extension bridges the gap and makes Google Docs that much more of a viable, web-based Microsoft Office replacement. Send to Google Docs is free, works wherever Firefox does.

There's a similar extension, Open IT Online which does this but for many other sites besides google, such as zoho. However I only use google and will probably prefer this one, probably more updated also (not sure if OIO has PDF for google yet)

For search results which produce links directly to files of certain filetypes (such as the example in this post), there is a Stylish userstyle that adds the native icon for that filetype, providing a more visual cue to quickly alert the user, instead of the default simple, non-obvious textual version, i.e. "[DOC]" (as above).
This provides a way to quickly, visually identify results to non-html links, and includes all(?) filetypes that show up in Google results in this manner (doc, ppt, pdf, odt, etc). (screenshot) I would think this to be a useful addition if you search for these types of results with enough frequency to warrant using the addon mentioned in the article.
The style is available here*.
* - This is indeed shameless self-promotion, but it provides a relavant and (hopefully) useful tip for everyone!

uhm, ok. I tried the extension and it worked fine... the first time.
It opened the document in GoogleDoc without any problems but it only worked for the first document I tried to open. All the other attempts didn't do anything. I'm probably doing something wrong though.

I switched to office live since it plugs in directly in MS office, just use save to / open from office live in the office start button menu. It doesn't support pdf but it's so simple to use I fear I can no longer bother with Google docs.
