Personal Identity Portal Secures One-Click Sign-Ins
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 PM on August 21, 2008
Web security firm VeriSign has re-launched its Personal Identity Portal, an OpenID-backed portal that provides one-click sign-ins for many popular webapps and e-commerce sites. The biggest downside from using a software solution or another login handler is having to visit your personalised PIP page before moving ahead, but that can be a blessing if you can remember your password there but not at, say, Circuit City. The PIP page provides bookmarklets for quick access, but security-conscious users can also require that VeriSign authenticate another key or a browser certificate before granting access. The PIP service is free to use, and works wherever OpenID is supported. To learn more about OpenID, check out our review and walk-through.

it's a great start, but the website is a little clunky to use right now. This could be handy in the future though.

Looks to be very limited at this point, as the one-click-sign-ins only applies to a select number of Web sites. Clipperz is much more flexible in this aspect.

I just tried to sign up, and it won't let me use my email ID as a user name, it says no _'s.

This is just an OpenID provider with some extra features - including social network features. Is there really no limit to the types of sites that will add social features!!?!??

@purduepete: Yup, have a look at Passpack too (if you haven't yet) - there's a community driven 1 Click login database.
Most popular sites have already been trained, but if you come across a site that Passpack doesn't know yet, you can teach it in 3 clicks.

Can someone please explain to me how giving out your information makes you more secure?
Remember: War is peace. Red is the new black. The Patriot Act will protect your liberties. Giving up freedoms will make you more free.

I signed up for PIP and purchased a PayPal Security Key for it. Verisign sells their own "security key", but the PayPal one is cheaper.
I really like this setup. I don't care about the one-click signup or anything like that. But, I like knowing there's an extra layer of protection around my OpenID.
