Make an iPhone Ringtone with iTunes in Windows
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:40 PM on August 21, 2008
We've shown you how you can turn your (non-DRM-protected) music collection into custom iPhone ringtones using GarageBand and iTunes on a Mac, but the CyberNet tech site's made it easy for those with just a copy of iTunes for Windows to hack together their own tones. The basic trick is to single out a short section of a song in iTunes, export it to a non-protected AAC/M4A format, then do a quick file extension switch and re-upload it to iTunes. CyberNet details the process in greater detail, of course, and it's a nice fix for those who don't want to edit waveform files just to rock out to 20 seconds of "London Calling."

Do you guys even check your links before posting them? I tried to download ToneShop from the link in this post and the page no longer exists. Please remove it or provide a corrected link if possible.

@billc124: Apologies, I grabbed the link from the previous post a bit too hastily. Removed, since the page seems to be 404'd.

Are there any stand-alone apps that can create ringtones on a Mac? I deleted Garageband because I don't use it...now I'm regretting it hehe

@theadb: I use SoundJam in classic to edit my music down, then save it as an mp3.

I've been using this method to get ringtones for my iPhone. Hehe, day I bought the iPhone i sat down and set up about 20 songs to ringtones.
It's a great and easy hack, but I miss some of the customizability of ringtones made through Audacity. Those were l33t. I could probably still do it, but it would require a few extra steps. Bleh. Laziness rears its fugly head.

I used these steps to create a few ringtones before I got tired and threw together an application that allows a Windows user to drag-n-drop and move a few sliders to create a ringtone from an MP3.

@Aristeia: If I can find somewhere to stash it, I still have the installer for that ToneShop program, so I still use Audacity for my ringtones. :)
It's nice enough just for the fade-in and out, not to mention the rest of Audacity's tools.

I would just cut out the section of the song in audacity.

You could do it all manually like the guide says. But that is too much work. Just use this.
www.ringer.net
1) Import a Song.
2) Select a 30s section by dragging the wave left and right.
3) Select amount of time. (can shorten to less than 30s for use in a text msg tone.)
4) Add fade or other effects.
5) Click export and it will convert and automatically add to your Itunes ringtone folder.
6) Sync your phone.
Done.

@SonicJ: You do realize that you have to first rename then convert the file, edit it, then convert it back into the right format, right?

It simply amazes me that people pay for ringtones anymore, and now people are paying apple to make their own??? Are people that stupid.

Thanks though

The easiest solution for me is to go to [audiko.net] and make it there. You can upload an mp3 and make it or the site can even extract the audio from a youtube video. It offers you three formats to download when you are done and one of them is itunes ringtone. It's really quite easy and entirely free.

I use Audiko[www.audiko.net] to make ringtones online. You can upload your mp3 or supply an url for it to grab the file. Select the portion you want, it's converted to iphone, amr or mp3 ringtone format and a link to the final product is presented. They keep the ringtones archived for others to share as well.
The selection is already fairly large.

Or you could check out website www.myxer.com and get pretty much anything you want. OR, you can even upload your own music and then cut out a section that you'd like.
