QTAddressBar Brings Vista Explorer's Address Bar to XP
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on August 20, 2008

Windows only: Free Explorer add-on QTAddressBar clones the functionality of Vista's new address bar in Windows XP. For folks unfamiliar with the new Vista address bar, it provides a clickable breadcrumb trail of every folder leading to your current location. Clicking one of your folders will take you directly to it, and clicking the down arrow provides a drop-down for moving to any folder within that one. Brought to you by the same folks who made previously mentioned QTTabBar, this freeware Explorer add-on looks like another nice stopgap between Vista and XP. While you're at it, check out more ways you can power up Windows Explorer with free add-ons.

This seems actually better than the Vista way of it, in that it lets you go through subfolders in the dropdown. Is there a setting in Vista that lets you do that?

In Vista, you can go to the next folder higher up in the hierarchy by pressing Alt + Up. With the QTTabBar, you can enable the ability to use Backspace, just like in XP.

I switched back to XP because of annoying things like this. If you want your XP to look and act just like Vista, why don't you just get Vista?

@Reilaos~: Got on to ask the EXACT same question. I don't understand why people would prefer the way Vista does it.
For Vista, is there something that lets me go back to the way XP was in this regard? Especially, is there a way to bring back that 'Up A Directory' button?

Lifehacker, for things like this, can you post whether it's working in the background or just a mod to your computer?

Yet again the general consensus agrees, this is just another one of VISTA's apps that XP users do not want... beating the purpose all together.

Have you read the responses here?

There are people who like their XP installs to look and sometimes act like Vista without having to get a whole new OS (so they can go back to regular XP functionality if they don't like it). Sometimes they want it to look like Vista down to smaller things like this and shell32 hacks. This is the kind of thing for them. Same argument as for people who theme XP to look like a Mac and use a dock or ObjectBar or the like. I wouldn't assume that other people don't want it or that they ought to just get whatever system they are emulating. No reason to whine about it since it isn't harming you and some people enjoy it.

@xint: Way to troll. You and JuniorAndTorrie are the only ones who have said anything negative about this download thus far. I happen to prefer Vista's Address Bar, and this is certainly an app that I will be installing on my XP boxes.

if you guys use Direct Folders in conjunction with this program, be sure not to hide the original address bar, or Direct Folders will return an incorrect path when adding new paths to your list.

This was one of the functions of Vista that made me decide to stick with XP. I like the address bar with the old-style drop-down list of folders.

@Phoshi: Mhmmm, this has been mentioned a lot (by me as well...lol). I guess it's good to have a post on it.

I'm in agreement with everyone else. Vista's address bar style is what has partially kept me on XP. The new method is horrible. This app is at least what Vista should be more like. The dropdowns are nice.

Lack of an up button is what pushed my, finally, to Linux. Yes, I know about bread crumbs and all that crap, but I want a fixed up button in a fixed place that does exactly the same thing and always looks the same.
Vista. What an abortion.

I use and love QTAddressBar and the TabBar. I used Explorer breadcrumbs and loved that. I just switched completely over to the QT thing for consistency.
As for me, I love the breadcrumb motif. I use Locationbar2 on Firefox because it gives me the same functionality. It's just a matter of preference I guess.

I have also tried this. Uninstalled ti yesterday because of the two reasons:
1. It reeeealy slowed my explorer. After a fresh start (reboot) when I open My Computer (or any other folder with Explorer) it took over 15 seconds to open! Now it's back to normal (almost instantly).
2. I only used it once or twice... So, I don't really need it.

I utterly DESPISE the Vista Explorer address bar. It's yet another example of Microsoft's attitude that "you're too stupid to actually use the information that could be available to you, so we'll hide some of it." No one but a Microsoft Fanboi could love it.

I've been using this amazing add-on for well over a year now, along with QT Tab Bar.
@Deadhacker: sadly, most Windows users ARE too stupid to use the information available to them!
I'm not a fanboy, but I love the functionality of the vista address bar. and like a couple ppl pointed out, QT Address Bar actually takes vista's address bar further and adds better options/features to it.

@Sensai: Why not just click the folder that "up" would take you to anyway? And that way, if you're wanting to go up more than one level, it's one click to go straight there instead of two or more. I'm not sure I get the objection here*, other than chalking it up to personal preference for what's comfortable and familiar, which is perfectly fine of course. I know I don't always go about things in the most efficient possible manner, prefering to stick to my habits. If there's some other factor at play here though I would be curious to hear it.
*Wait, yeah, I probably do. See the last part of this post.
@quoderat: You prefer a different style of folder navigation, therefore Vista is "an abortion"? Hyperbole much?
@Deadhacker: There no information hidden by Vista's address bar that's visible in XP's. The Vista address bar actually provides information faster: to see subfolders under a particular folder in Vista's bar, I only have to click the arrow next to it. To see the same information in XP, I have to type the name of the folder.
Oh wait, this is the Internet, where everything sucks and if you like it, you're a 'fanboi.' So I guess should just contribute to the mindless "Vista suxorz!!!1 M$!!!" echo chamber. Rational thought processes are overrated.

@Loodac: This is the only drawback I've encountered while using this app for a few months, but since I reboot about once every two weeks, it isn't much of a problem.

@Avrithor: If the part you wanted me to read to explain why I didn't like it was the part about the Internet being irrational, I gotta tell you that I'm _not_ an idiot who mindlessly flames things simply because another does.
Here's an example of a reason why an 'Up' button would be handy:
Since I manage a lot of files for music/pictures and need to be specific as to what's in what folder, I often times, especially with music folders that have a ton of artists working on a single piece, have REALLY long folder names. So, when I open a folder (usually from another program where the 'Back' button does not suffice), the only thing that shows up in Vista's 'handy' address bar is that said folder...
Jeah, I'm not an idiot. I never stated that Vista sucked, nor have I ever mindlessly echoed what others have said.
I understand that usually the Vista bar is helpful in that I can simply click once to go up 3 directories instead of three clicks...but it's not always that way.
Thanks for the response.
