When you don't want Google content cluttering up your search results, the Google minus Google custom search engine cuts out pages from Knol, Blogger, and YouTube. [via]

you can just search normal google like this:

@rattis: More to the point, the site is worthless. If you read the about page the person who created Google Minus Google did so upon reading an article that was effectively full of FUD.

Maybe I'm just overly paranoid, but it's not google, and how do I know the person isn't making and keeping a list of searches and ip addresses for later?

It's funny. This morning, I just searched for something in Cuil, couldn't find what I wanted and then searched in google and what I wanted was on youtube and I wondered why Cuil doesn't feature useful google sites the way that google does.

Considering half the time Blogger and Youtube have things relevant to my search, this really wouldn't help me much.
That said, the other half of the time I find what I need at wikipedia.

@rattis - Google Minus Google is just an implantation of Google's custom search, so it actually IS Google.

I just wish Google supported a cookie-based setting to always block out certain sites from searches (coughcoughYahooAnswerscoughcough)

Yahoo.

Might be the difference. For 'everyday' things, it might be useful. I find if I'm searching for anything of a computery nature, it's useless with the average answer on par with "reformat and reinstall". Meh.
Anyway, if anyone comes up with a Greasemonkey script or such, let us know.

@Xanderificus: Yeah, I would love to have a feature to block out certain sites. (I wouldn't block Yahoo Answers, since it has come in handy a lot of times for certain out of the blue questions, e.g. best way to travel between birmingham and nottingham or process to get VISA for France.. etc.)

hmm... half the things i search for in google are hosted on illicit blogs, so why would i want to block that out?
mmm, rapidshare links... ::drool::

I searched knol and the 2nd result that came up was knol.
Ironically Wikipedia came up first :P

@HobBramble: However, the domain name is not google.com... Which means you're search has to pass through at least one other server before reaching google. What is the person going to do the the data he's getting?

How about a way to block experts-exchange.com? I'm so tired of that being in my results.

@jonadair: Completely agree. I ALWAYS have to include -site:experts-exchange.com when I'm searching for Linux help. I was able to set up a keyword shortcut in FF3 by making it search excluding experts-exchange. Steps I took: 1) Go to google.com and right click the search field and select "Add a keyword for this search...". Name it whatever keyboard you want and go into your bookmarks to edit the search bookmark. 2) Replace the original google URL to this: [www.google.com] You can now search google using the awesome bar by typing the keyword followed by what you want to search in the awesome bar. I had to rush on the steps since I have to leave.

@jonadair: Amen. So annoying to think you've found an answer and then see you have to pay to get it.

rolcol, thanks, that is going to be helpful for me!
I also wish I could get rid of any hits that are mercantile or sales-oriented. I don't want to shop for a book about the topic, just find what is online about it. If I was shopping I'd have searched for "book", "buy", or something like that.
I can dream, can't I?

distortedloop (and Rolcol and jonadair)-
I've never had to pay for experts-exchange. If you scroll all the way to the bottom you can see the thread. It's annoying, but I've gotten a lot of second hand help with a lot of problems without paying. I actually really like experts-exchange because you see which post has the answer to the question, and the thread always stays on topic.

It's a nice solution, but it's not needed for us "google experts". Search for the keyword "youtube", you'll find all kinds of things about youtube without finding youtube.com. So, on regular google, try this query (without quotes): "youtube -site:youtube.com". Simply add (without quotes) "-site:BLEH.COM" after the first one to hide results from that site as well.
EXAMPLE SEARCH:
lolcats -site:youtube.com -site:blogger.com -site:knol.google.com

@flash2004
a defined search can be made through Google. at the time of your search for keywords, you can add "-answers.yahoo.com" with a space after the keywords and it will remove that site from the search. if you want more sites removed, add a space then a "-" followed by the site or keyword.

Just add the following instead to your normal search:
-site:knol.google.com -site:blogger.com -site:blogspot.com -site:youtube.com
Add any other domains you don't want either

This is a good idea, but I've been doing the same thing using the "site" feature. It works the same way in exclusion, for example "google earth -site:google.com" returns almost the same results as Google minus Google.
Knowing the advanced search keywords (like filetype:pdf for filetypes or 1234..2345 for numeric ranges) is the most powerful way to search, IMHO. No need for a website that just oversimplifies the obvious.

This seems more useful but less entertaining than Garfield minus Garfield.
