Snarl Displays Growl-Like Universal Notifications
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on July 29, 2008
Windows only: Free application Snarl is a universal notification system for Windows inspired by the popular Mac OS X notifier Growl. We mentioned Snarl once before, but the young project has improved a lot since then, with extensions supporting Firefox, Pidgin, Outlook, Sunbird, and more. Out of the box Snarl has built-in support for battery warnings, system events, and timer and clock support (like hourly reminders)—along with several attractive themes. It needs support for a wider range of apps if it's ever going to do everything Growl does, but it's got a good start. Snarl is free and open source, Windows only. Thanks Eric!

@Adam Pash: I mentioned Snarl in your article comments: The Lifehacker Editors' Favorite Software and Hardware [What We Use], but no hard feelings. Eric can take the credit :-P

I see this competing with Growl in the future.... at least catching up to it...hopefully, more open source developers contribute and collaborate with the authors...

@bdragonmsl:
Yup it works on Vista.
I tried it ages and tried it again last night, it's a bit, well meh really. I wouldn't consider using it properly until more apps are integrated with in to it like support WLM.

uh, even if this is available, don't the software writers of the various software have to actually incorporate snarl into their coding, like growl works?

Nice app, I can wait for more plug-ins to become available for more apps. Ive always wanted serious Growl alternative for Windows.

How is this different than the regular Windows notification bubbles?

I tried this before, but every time I tried to change a setting, it crashed, so I dunno. That was before the reinstall tho..so who knows.

@MillardFillmore: I don't know about you, but regular notification bubbles are the most annoying thing I've ever seen. Growl, on the other hand, is very useful. Hopefully Snarl is more like growl than the bubbles.

I wonder if the lifehacker bump will get more developers working on this.
I would love to see winamp, digsby, openpandora (haha, yeah right), steam (sometimes I make myself laugh) and flashget support.

Didn't really like this because every time I pulled out my USB, I got like five notification messages. Even if it is toggle-able in the options, that's still a bad set of default options. And it doesn't really support that much apps, like Yahoo! Messenger (yeah, I have to use that).

@jfty.009260: Yeah, I got that too. I toggled off the unplug/plug thing since I don't really need my computer telling me that (all my hardware is in plain sight).
It does work with Pidgin though. I like it better than that normal balloons, but it's integration with Pidgin can be trumped by Guifications (which I've currently turned off to test Snarl).
It's got some nice promise, but I really need it to do more (and in some cases, less) than what it's currently doing.

I like this but it just doesn't have the app coverage for me. For something like Snarl to work it almost needs to have near-universal app compatibility.

@qrius: Yes. It's real easy to do though. I added Snarl support to Witty a while back. However it also supports Growl notifications.
And there's a Growl for Windows project in the works: [code.google.com]

Hummm, it's some time now i'm looking for something similar to be used as a reminder, learning tool. Something that I could use to write a piece of note and configure to popup, say, 3 or 4 times a day so it would call my attention to learn something, not necessarily appointment reminders, but learning notes. So when I saw this snarl i thought it was meant for that, installed, tried a bit but didn't find a way to do what i wanted.

Wow, nice to see that we are mentioned here. I am the developer of several extensions for Mozilla based applications (Fire, Thunder, Sun- and SongSnarl) as well as the one for Pidgin (PidginSnarl). So I am listening very carefully here where there is the biggest demand for my next one :)
I am already in contact with some developers of Digsby, Winamp, Foobar2000, Miranda and KMPlayer - so I am just priorizing myself now :) My big hope is that some of them will do it themself (I would be lucky to provide any help) as my time is limited ;)
@AndiC - how can we help you with the documentation? More examples?

Used for about a day, then realized there wasn't enough app support at the moment. Given time this could be a damn fine addition to any windows desktop.

The best thing I ever did with Outlook was to disable the popup message indicator. Every time a new notification pops up, you lose your focus on your current task.
