KallOut Searches the Web from Any Application
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 5:00 AM on July 29, 2008
Windows only: Small utility KallOut integrates into popular desktop programs such as Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Firefox and lets you search the web for text found there. Simply highlight text inside the application (like PowerPoint) and right click to choose your search engine. Here's a video demonstration of the integration:
Kallout embeds searches for Google, Yahoo, Windows Live Search, Wikipedia, Dictionary.com, IMDB, Amazon, Craiglist, eBay, Flickr, Photobucket, YouTube, Metacafe, Google Maps, Virtual Earth, and dozens more into a simple right click menu that is accessible in programs outside your web browser. KallOut is a free download for Windows only.

I kind of like the idea...but this application needs serious work. Crashes and hogs my memory as well on Vista.

An alternative to this would be the AHK Google search script found here [www.autohotkey.com]
Select text in any app, hit control G ( this can be changed ) and your default browser will open with a google search result. Works a charm.

This is awesome! ymmv but Kallout has worked great for me. Very stable and intuitive application. Works fine in FIrefox for me. KallOut is really satisfying to use; when it gets a "BestGuess" you just feel good. I love it.

There was another app that does a similar job... www.transfz.com... and works with every application... and it's easy to add extensions to it...

To LifeHacker: WRT comments on this article: http://lifehacker.com/399376/kallout-searches-the-web-from-any-application Please publish these thoughts: We appreciate you mentioning KallOut in your blog and hope that your users will enjoy KallOut's new way to search using only your mouse. To Drogean: We agree that the links should be able to launch your default browser (vs. IE always) and this is a current bug that should be fixed shortly To JoeLena: WRT App support, we support 9 apps in multiple versions on XP and Vista. We agree this is not "any application". Our goal is to add more app's based on the ones that our users tell us are important to support. The reason we can't support any windows app is that we need to be able to detect the text selection and the location of the selected text in the windows (so we draw the KallOut context menu target right next to the text selection). To access the app anywhere over any app, you can use the Alt-Space short cut or "K in the tray" to bring KallOut up over any application. To pobox90210 and ez13: KallOut is in beta and we'd love to address the problems that you reported. So, if you want to contact us at LeeL@KallOut.com, I can assure you that we will work to fix the problems you've found. Thanks, Lee Lorenzen CEO, KallOut - a new way to search using only your mouse e-mail: LeeL@KallOut.com

@Drogean
KallOut is designed to honor the default browser setting on your computer. We currently support IE6, IE7, Firefox 2 and Firefox 3. If Firefox is your default browser and links are still opening in Internet Explorer, this is a bug. Please send me an email with your configuration so we can track it down.
Thanks Lifehacker for posting the link to KallOut! We are currently in Beta so I'd encourage any readers that have questions or run into bugs to fill out the form on our homepage or email me at matt@kallout.com.
Sincerely,
Matt Lorenzen

@drogean: Check out Keybreeze. It lets you search various websites and it will open it your default browser. Just press a global hotkey (semicolon by default) and then type a letter and a query:
s query - Google search
w query - Wikipedia search
d query - Dictionary search
e query - eBay search
You can configure these and add your own. See

Storkme!!! You can't be serious!
I find a word anywhere, want to search it and open up the browser for that: (ok worst case)
Way1:
* I point the mouse to the lower left of the screen
* i click Start
* i point to Programs
* then mozilla firefox
* i click to open firefox
* I type google.com into the adressbar
* Enter
* I remember the word and type it into the searchbar
* I press enter
* I have my result!
Way2:
* I doubleclick the word
* I press a hotkey
* I have my result!
which way is harder if you work with the pc 24/7? ;]
Again: ac'tivAid has that built-in as well! (not so straigtforward as this KallOut but still better than handwork) thats of course with Autohotkey as well Mrmandala! On the AHK-script I like the Idea to open selected web adresses context sensitively. Currently I have 2 separate hotkeys for that.
