Amazon Watcher Auto-Orders Items When They're In-Stock
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:00 AM on July 28, 2008
Windows/Mac OS X: Amazon Watcher isn't the first gadget that can monitor Amazon items for price drops and availability, but it is the rare tool that can automatically buy your rare gear for you. Once you add your account information (and assuming you have payment methods stored on that account), you're set to have Amazon Watcher buy x units of whatever you're hunting, but it can also pop up the order page or email you, if you're less jumpy. Having all your must-grab items constantly ready for purchase can probably break strong wills, however, so, luckily, this app can reduce to the system tray. Amazon Watcher is a free download for Windows or Mac OS X systems.

@zormal: Thanks for the link. From what I can tell is your link works with third party merchants. Looks like a good tool and I plan to use this (there are a couple harder to find books I may experiment with starting today!), although most of what I buy through Amazon are products sold and fulfilled by Amazon itself. I guess it wasn't listed in the summary here, but the AmazonWatcher application does only Amazon fulfilled items.
There is definitely a use for both tools since each depends on personal shopping habits, but I wanted to point out the main differences with regard to Amazon vs 3rd party merchants for the two applications. (And it isn't clear on that page if the price you specify is with or without shipping, but I did not click through the details to read the fine print, so they may already have that worked out. I'm a Prime subscriber, so for products under $25 this is also more relevant to me than non-prime users.)
Thanks again Zormal for that link though, it definitely looks useful.

Actually, Amazon does have an automatic order / watcher system in place, but they only show you the link if the item is sold out. It's called marketplace preordering. You can still use it if you enter the address manually. I've been using it for ages.
Here is the magic address for marketplace preordering: [s1.amazon.co.uk]
Just change the last number (the item id) to the item you want to (pre)order.
I use the UK site, since I live in Europe, but this also works on dotcom.
Just change .co.uk --> .com

@VayaConQueso: That part makes me a bit hesitant as well, but it seems like a convenient application. For now I just installed it on a secondary computer but left out account details. I am just using the price watching feature until we get see some third party testing to verify the application is safe.
That being said, it is very handy just for the price watching without entering account info. At any time, I usually have anywhere from 3 to 10 items I keep an eye on. Now I can see the current daily price in one place without loading multiple bookmarked pages or checking my saved cart or wishlist every day.

But...who are they? No info, anonymous WhoIs info...and they can use my account with my stored CC#?

I'm still wondering why the Amazon site itself hasn't implemented this. Other places I buy stuff online do, i.e.: Newegg.

Hmmm, I tried this program with an item on Amazon; eventually it DID pop up and tell me that my item was available, but when I click on the link and go to amazon itself, the item is still out of stock. Maybe it's not working properly?

@Captain Bringdown is Berserker:
Ummm... if amazon implemented this on their site it wouldn't really be a tool. It would just be a waiting list that everyone could use and would probably put everyone in chronological order to receive the next available unit rather than the free-for-all that this application could take advantage of.
