Sleeping In on Weekends a No-No
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:40 AM on July 25, 2008
Popular Science says that sleeping in on the weekend makes it harder to get up on time during the week. The concept may be common knowledge for most, but the article backs it up with science for those who still aren't convinced.

If I don't set my alarm, I'm up by 8, every day, weekends included

My body is so used to getting up at 7am each morning, that when I don't set my alarm on the weekends, I inevitably get up shortly after 7 anyway. I just like not being woken up by the alarm on the weekends-- it's the delusion I could sleep in even though I don't.
And weekends are too precious for sleep anyways!

Sleeping in on the weekend is one of life's little pleasures. I am more than willing to pay a price on Monday. It's worth it.

@Deadhacker: I'm in between institutions at the moment, and I'm practically nocturnal. I frequently go to sleep at 6.30AM and get up at 3PM. You'll be a lot more productive than me, that's for sure- so there are some positives.

Sleep? I can sleep when I'm dead. Get up at 5 AM, play Wow until 6:45 weekdays, shower, dress, go to work.

That may be, but sleeping in on weekdays makes it just as hard to get up on time on the weekend.

@Krondonian: I hear ya. I'm in sort of the same situation as you, and have a very similar sleep schedule. I find my most productive hours are between 10pm, and 2am. I use those hours to do most of my re-decorating, sorting/cleaning, and lately, to work on a lot of my music.
It's a bitch when I have to be up at 6am for an 8:30 am appointment downtown, though. Often I just don't bother going to sleep...

I've found a strategy that works pretty well. I sleep like a mofo on the weekends, then Sunday night (and other nights if necessary) I pop some melatonin (or whatever sleep supplement works for you) and I'm right back on schedule. Even if I were to sleep until 4pm on Sunday, I can pop that pill and be to sleep by 1am, ready to get 7 or 8 hours before I have to get up. You just have to sacrifice some awake hours...

What is this `sleeping late on the weekend` thing? Don't any of you folks have kids?

Actually, it's getting up earlier on weekdays that interferes with your weekend sleeping. :D

This just in: Scientific investigation suggests that doing heroin on weekends makes you want to do it on weekdays too.

Some might say that high school-ers are notorious for sleeping.. But when you have to get up at 5:30 every morning for school - you don't sleep in on the weekends. I accepted that Freshman year and decided to run in the mornings instead. Much more rewarding. :]

When you're getting up at 6:45 every day, the latest you're "sleeping in" on the weekends is like 8 AM. Anyone who knows sleep knows that isn't sleeping in at all.

My big thing is that if I set an alarm I can't get sleep at all because I hate being beeped awake. My own internal alarm works pretty well most of the time. Although my life schedule sometimes changes between working late and needing to get up early, sometimes back to back. Like tonight.

@bswilson: At 6 & 8, my kids know not to wake Daddy on Saturday or Sunday. They get up fix their own breakfast and start playing without me.
Like HasnaBelle, I'm most productive from 10pm until 2am. So I regularly go to bed ~2am and get up @6am during the week. On the weekends I may stay up 'til 3, but I pretty much always sleep until 10 (or a bit later).

I'm with vered on this one. I sleep so little during the week that I just love my weekend sleep-ins. I think I've still got a bit of 'student' left in me, as if I don't set an alarm, chances are that I won't wake up before about 3pm!

From the article:
"You can train yourself to wake up earlier, Matheson says, by setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier each day (and heeding its call)."
So, all I have to do to beat the incredible challenge of getting out of bed each morning, no matter how much sleep I get, is to...get out of bed? Seriously, this is the advice they give?

When it comes to whether or not to sleep in on weekends, there is always science-backed articles going back and forth on the subject. I've heard this advice flip over and over again for years.

I second the article's advice. From years of experience with insomnia (and reading of sleep research literature), I know that getting up at a consistent time every day is of paramount importance.
Adam - *awesome* that you provide a solid scientific reference to back up the article! :-)

@cybrown: LOL - exactly. If you can manage to not be human or have human tendencies, maintaining a perfect sleep schedule is easy! Bleh...

Are they just figuring this out? I've known this for years, and yet my husband thinks I'm nuts for getting up at 7 am on a Sunday

My verdict - still worth it.
Plus, sleeping in doesn't require actual sleep. I'm usually awake by 8, but if I don't have to get up, I'll grab a book and read for a few hours. It's all about starting the day in an enjoyable, unhurried way. Makes for a good weekend.

When your alarm goes off at 5:15 on weekdays, 7 a.m. "feels" like sleeping in late. Plus, I find that if I sleep longer than 8 hours, I wake up with a headache...or as my partner calls it, a "sleep-hangover."
