Jailbreak iPhone 2.0 on Windows with Winpwn
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:45 AM on July 25, 2008

If you don't feel like you're getting all you can from the iPhone App Store and other perks of the iPhone and iPod touch 2.0 software, then jailbreaking is for you. We've already shown you how to jailbreak your iPhone 2.0 on a Mac, but yesterday the Windows version of the iPhone jailbreak tool—called Winpwn—hit the streets, so now Windows users have a user-friendly way to jailbreak. Let's take a step-by-step look at how to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch using Winpwn.
Warning: Before you dive in, keep in mind that this jailbreak method is very new. I ran into the same show-stopping snag along the way and have not yet been able to use it to jailbreak my iPhone. Others have had success, so your mileage may vary. Nothing I've been able to do so far has harmed my iPhone in any way. It's just not jailbroken.
What You'll Need
Before you get started, make sure you have the following:- An iPhone or iPod touch running either the 2.0 software
- Winpwn downloaded and installed on your computer
- A Windows machine. If you want to jailbreak on a Mac, check out how to jailbreak your iPhone 2.0 with the PwnageTool.
Winpwn Step by Step
You need to use Winpwn to create a custom version of the iPhone 2.0 software for your device, so the first thing you need to do is create that custom image using the IPSW Builder. To do this, just fire up Winpwn and select the IPSW Builder.
Click Browse .ipsw for the iPhone or iPod touch 2.0 software on your computer. Point it toward the iPhone software you downloaded above.
Once your iPhone software is recognised, click the IPSW Builder button to get started making your customised image.
From the IPSW Builder, tick the Install Cydia checkbox. Don't check YouTube activation fix if you're an official AT&T customer. Then click the Build .ipsw button. You'll be prompted to save the custom ipsw file. Choose where where you want to save it and click Save (it defaults to the Winpwn install location). The IPSW Builder will take several minutes to create your custom IPSW image. NOTE: Winpwn had trouble for me at this point, failing several times and crashing once. I'm actually still trying to get past this point, and will update the post if I have any luck. If all worked according to plan, the following steps should go something like this:
Once you've got your new custom image, go back into Winpwn and click on iPwner. You'll be prompted to choose the custom IPSW you created above.
Now you need to put your phone into DFU mode, as demonstrated in the video above.

Once you enter DFU mode, iTunes will open to your iPhone. Now just hold shift and click the restore button, then browse to and choose the custom IPSW file we created with IPSW Builder. iTunes will now install your custom firmware on your iPhone or iPod touch. It may take a while, but when you're done you'll be running your custom iPhone 2.0 software, complete with the Cydia installer.
For more on Cydia, check out the Using Cydia section of Gina's excellent guide to jailbreaking on a Mac with the Pwnage Tool. Also, now that you're jailbroken, you can appreciate why we need the iPhone app black market.
If you give it a try and had more luck than I did, let's hear about it in the comments.

I'm a bit sad that Winpwn isn't as pretty as the mac one...
I already jailbroke my iPhone 3g using a prepwned file done by the mac version, and then just applied it through iTunes. It works great :D

Hi, mine is a 1st gen iPhone. I upgraded to 2.0 with a prepwned file done on a Mac. It was working fine but I had wanted to go back to 1.1.4 and so I did the unthinkable and restore to 2.0 with iTunes. Now I am unable to downgrade to 1.1.4 nor am I able to jailbreak it with Winpwn 2.0.0.3, or anything else. My iPhone is just stuck with a 2.0 firmware that cannot be jailbroken, but the baseband has been unlocked and I can only take calls. Help !

@h0mi: I was getting that error late last night too. If you had 2.0 loaded before, and you are now in DFU mode, you don't need to restore to get back. Just unplug it, then hold the home and sleep keys until the logo appears on the screen. It will take a minutes, but you will get back to where you were before.

That was probably a question I could have answered myself, looking at the screenshots. Looks like this is your problem, hopefully the fix is out soon.
I just reinstalled iTunes, and I'm still getting the 1602 error. Looks like its back to regular 2.0 for me, until they can get this running more efficiently. I'm using Windows Vista, by the way.

@Adam Pash: Are you running Windows XP? The developer, cmw, posted this:
"Some users have had problems with installing Cydia on Windows XP. This will be fixed in tomorrow's release. "

@Jagged Toaster: Thanks for the updates, I'd love to hear if you got it working. I've tried several Windows installs and am still having the same problem.

I just tried again and got another 1602 error. I successfully jailbroke my iPod using the unofficial method for Windows a few days ago, and what I had to do was uninstall iTunes AND Apple Mobile Device Support, and then reinstall iTunes. I'm trying it again, and I'll let you know how it goes.

I keep getting 1604 errors when trying to restore. So I'm stuck. I tried 2 different PCs and reinstalled itunes on the other PC and no dice. I'm trying a regular upgrade to 2.0 and then pwning the phone that way.

Also, according to someone on the iPod touch fans forum, it is not recommended to use a custom logo yet. If something happens and the phone gets stuck at the boot screen, I'm not sure they would be willing to a repair a phone with a pineapple displayed at bootup.

The ipsw builder kept crashing for me too. I got it on my fourth try. But after I 'pwned' iTunes and put my iPod into DFU mode, it kept giving me an error message when I tried to restore with the custom software.

Aren't you going to hell if you Jailbreak? Kidding... Cool up, I hope the release a more stable version. So Cyndia and App Store work in parallel, right? Any problems having both there?
Can ATT detect you are running a custom firmware?

Sweet... although it appears it is not working for you. Look forward to your update to see if it works successfully.
And now to stand back and count how many people bitch about another iPhone post. Ha!

Oh, and while I'm at it, iTunes on Windows annoys the *fuck* outta me. Everytime it makes a small amount of progress in restoring from backup, THE WINDOW TAKES FOCUS. WTF.

So far so good. Winpwn did crash on me a couple of times, but I was finally able to create a custom firmware, it's been installed on my iPhone (3G in case you were wondering), and now I'm restoring my iPhone from the last backup. I'll keep you updated.

I discovered that winpwn might crash because of the extensive memory usage during the last 2-3 steps of creating the custom build.
Top tip: During that time just keep minimizing and restoring winpwn's every min or so (or see when the ram usage goes high) main window and see that your ram usage goes down for a while. Keep doing this until the build is done and you will be fine!
Let me know if someone has yet pwned iPhone 3G. Does the apps work correctly? I see lot of people complaining about apps crashing on Pwned iphone 3G!!!

I just bought an iPod Touch a few days ago. I've been following the jailbreak stuff since it first started happening even though I didn't have an iPod Touch/iPhone.
Now that the App store is out(and I've read the Lifehacker article) I'm not sure why I would bother jailbreaking my iPod. There don't seem to be the killer apps or features to make me want to bother. Also, can you run the apps from the Apple store on the jailbroken touch/iphone?

If you have an Ipod Touch it needs a different software update file. the Iphone firmware is incompatible. anyone know where itunes stores the firmware information on your pc?

@beezn:Go to the Start Menu and hit run, and type this in: %APPDATA%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Update
That gets you to where it stores the updates it downloads.

@seda: ok, quick question. I am a jailbreak noob. I managed to get everything installed and seems to be running right, but now I have no service. Is there something I have to do to get the at&t service back on my phone?

Works great for me first time around. I am a complete iphone noob but this was simple enough. Thanks for the guide. Only problem I had at all was when I first tried to run winpwn. It kept saying I needed .net framework version 2.0. So after a minute of figuring that out and installing the up to date frameworks, it was a breeze. I look forward to the new apps and jailbreaking my wife's 3g phone when she gets home. (I have the original)

HI All,
I have just jailbroken my O2-UK iphone 3G. The process went fine 1st time which i was suprised about.
However I have a stange problem. I am able to make outbound calls using the phone, however can't receieve calls. I can't receieve SMS text messages either.
It also appears the phone now has "American" firmware on it, as the dialing keypad is different, when you go to enter digits it now puts "-" (hyphens) after the 1st 3 digits, where as before it didn't do that.
Maybe there are different versions of "iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ispw"??
Any suggestions?

Hello All,
Im in in UK. I have an iphone 3G with O2. I have followed the instructions and it works, I now have a jailbroken iphone 3G.
I unchecked the "Activate" button, as suggested by a number of sites now.
However there is a problem. I can make calls outbound fine. However I cannot receive any calls :( I can't receive any SMS messages either.
Also noticed it seems like the iphone has american firmware on it, because the dialing keypad screen is different, in that when i enter digits it puts "-" in between where as on the UK firmware it didnt.
Maybe there are different regional firmware versions of "iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw" ?

@seda that is correct.
It is also important to note that if you already have an activated 3g phone with AT&T you want to uncheck the "Activate Phone" option in the advance settings which is in the latest rebuild of 2.0.0.2 RC1
I jailbroke in XP, the latest build seems to have problems in Vista, however.

Can anybody clarify on how I should start out if I have a Jailbroken 1.1.3 iTouch? Can I just do a standard update through iTunes to 2.0 and then start this process, or is that gonna cause problems since it's already jailbroke?

@eambos: Error 6 means you went into Recovery mode, not DFU. If it's in DFU for the first time, you'll know, because (in XP) you'll get that "New Software" yellow bubble in your taskbar.

Also, if you've purchased the upgrade on iTunes and are looking for the ipsw ('iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw'), it should be in: "C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\"
