Calgoo Goes Free, Syncs Desktop Calendars with Google Calendar
Posted by Adam Pash at 5:30 AM on July 25, 2008
Windows/Mac OS X only: Online and desktop calendar-syncing application Calgoo Connect—along with all of the other calendar tools available from Calgoo—are now free. Calgoo Connect syncs Outlook on Windows or iCal on OS X with popular online calendars, namely Google Calendar and 30 Boxes. Granted, syncing Gcal with Outlook is pretty well covered with previously mentioned Google Calendar Sync, but Mac users haven't had a free solution for Gcal-to-iCal sync, which makes the free offering from Calgoo a godsend. All Calgoo products are now freeware, Windows and Mac OS X only.

Google now support WebDAV so you don't need to use an application like to sync your calendar anymore :

Except if you're on Tiger OS X - doesn't support WebDAV :(

@Jimmy M: I'm using google calendar sync and then subscribing to the google iCal feed in iCalendar. More instructions here:

They show up as separate calendars but you can view by 'all' calendars on the iphone. It only syncs when you sync your phone but that's good enough for me.
Two things I'm still trying to figure out how to do is A) have the iphone notify me 15 minutes in advance of outlook appointments and B) show public shared google calendars.

@appleturnover: Are you on mac or pc? I've been using plaxo with PC (3 pc's and a windows mobile phone) and it does calendar and contact syncing just fine. I haven't had any clunkyness with it and would actually recommend it to anyone who has to use outlook or has a windows mobile phone and a data plan.

Corrrection: This almost works perfectly. It seems like a PC app that was ported to a Mac at the last minute (ergo the Java-ness of it). It seems to need to run in the dock constantly to be of any use; there's no option to put it in the menu bar or hid it completely, or to use it as a background process. Soooo close though.

This works perfectly! Amazing! I've spent hours trying to get GCalDaemon working with Leopard and just gave up a few days ago. Prefect timing Calgoo!

busysync on mac works well with syncing calendar.app [www.busymac.com] and entourage syncs with calendar.app itunes syncs with calendar
to sync google cal with pc I use google cal sync. It used to miss appointments that don't have you as a participant, i have not noticed that happening lately.
it is a mess to sync several platforms so be prepared to declare calendar bankruptcy at first if things go wrong it is easier to start with a master and work your way to each using overwrite options

I prefer Calgoo to Google's synch because, unless they changed it since I looked, Google synch will only synch you to your primary Google Calendar, which you can't change, it's just the first one you made. With Calgoo I crated a new work calendar in my Google Calendar and then I can switch it on and off if I just want to see my personal stuff without my work stuff. Very nice.

It won't sync public calendars to a standard google calendar, which sucks, because NuevaSync won't sync public calendars on a google calendar.

Need to get my work calendar onto iphone. Somehow.

@caedus: Haha, already been on that for a while. I tried the Plaxo method, but seemed a bit clunky. This seems more promising.

google calendar sync SUCKS. you can't sync, for example, your work Outlook with your Gmail Calendar. I was told, by the Google help group, that it's not possible. Not everything will sync.

Does the sync go directly between google calendar and ical/outlook, or does it go from google calendar, to calgoo calendar, and then to ical/outlook?

@jordan314: Right - that's what I'm saying. I need public shared calendar sync support. Over the air. With Push. NuevaSync doesn't support it. MobileMe doesn't support it.

I've use GCalDaemon with both my Ubuntu desktop at home and WindowsXP desktop at work for years, it works fine and I just have to install, configure for the first time, and then forgot it.But I'll give a try.

I have Outlook 2003 at work. I've tried a bunch of these Google sync tools and I've been dissatisfied with nearly all of them, including Google's own. They never quite seem to work. The only one that's been reliable has been SyncMyCal. (No, I'm not a shill. Just a customer.) I paid for the full version and it really does work like a charm.

"...but Mac users haven't had a free solution for Gcal-to-iCal sync, which makes the free offering from Calgoo a godsend."
The problem with this statement is that implies that Calgoo lets you sync between iCal and Google Calendar, which, if you tried it out, it doesn't. Do your research, guys!
From Calgoo:
"Google Calendar requires Calgoo Hub Plugin in order to publish to Calgoo Hub.
Download Calgoo Hub Plugin if you have not already done so. This is available for Windows only at this moment."

I've had problems with Google Calendar Sync too...mainly around Meeting Invites that I send to colleagues from my work address, but after syncing somehow end up with the Meeting Organizer being my Gmail account!

@pham: I was able to create an event in iCal and sync it to Gcal, which is generally the hard part of Gcal-to-iCal sync. But I am actually have trouble pulling updates from Gcal. Where did you get that support statement.
Apologies if I was wrong on that--I took for granted that bringing events from Gcal into iCal was the easy part.

@pham: Thats with Calgoo Hub, If you use Calgoo Connect www.calgoo.com/connect.do you can sync your iCal with gCal.
Hub is a sharing solution and will not sync (at least not at this time) thus Connect is used for sync and Hub is used for Share. Calendar is used as a full feature desktop calendar with sync and share capabilities.

Been using OggSync for a few months. Outlook/GCal support is great on desktop. It doesn't do push on mobiles, but it can be set to run automatically, which is at least close. Also syncs contacts.

I had been frustrated with the lack of a good way to sync Outlook and multiple Google calendars for ages (had tried Calgoo and several other solutions), and maybe a year ago found gSyncit ([www.daveswebsite.com]). Yes, you have to pay for it ($10) if you want to sync more than one Google Calendar, but it is well worth it. Works GREAT. (And, same as jddphd, I have nothing to do with the folks who make the product. I just find that it does what's promised reliably.)

Thanks, @Photojen. Tried out gSyncit for about 20 minutes before purchasing. Works beautifully.

I"m on mac, and I just tried Calgoo. It's horrible!!! The interface is clunky to use, seemed to be a vista software forced into mac. I tried to sync my iCal with Gcal; it didn't work, and erased all my iCal calenders!! I almost had a heart attack to find my iCal completely empty. I was fortunate enough to be able to import all the calendars back. Anyhow, the experience had been a bad one.

i use plaxo and that seems to work well. you can only sync your main calendar (which is what i've discovered, unless i'm missing something). i'm ok with that though. check it out: http://www.plaxo.com

Calgoo seems to be quite a resource hog with it's Java approach. Can't have it running in the background which would be a requirement for automatic syncing..
