This looks very cool, for mounting of zips alone. No more extracting zip files to temp folders to install downloaded software (when they're zipped anyway). :D

jZip can do the same thing... it can extract .iso, .7z, .tar, .zip, .rar, and alot more types... it's not really a mount, but you can still use it to extract... it's much better than 7zip for many reasons too, nicer UI, shell integration, etc.

If you don't need all the features of Alcohol 120 I like to use Alcohol 52 it's free to use unlike 120.

It looks like this app might have some hope. Mounting zips would be useful for testing downloads without actually having to unzip downloads.

As well the pfo format supports adding files to the archive (which can be compressed) and encryption (using Libtomcrypt). This might make it compete well with Truecrypt because it can increase the size of the container on the fly. I'll have to give it more testing but for a ~800k download so far it seems promising.

And the tool I referred to before that allows writing to Zip files is WinMount.

Alcohol 120 has worked for me for a while now, also use it with XBOX media centre to play movie images, works a treat.

I ran across a similar tool to this (that would let you mount ZIPs) that was payware. Unfortunately Pismo does not appear to have write capability to Zips, so while I might find uses for it, they may be more limited.

One thing I would use it for is the Toolbox directory of MATLAB has 100 000 files taking over 2GB that's nasty on the file system, so I have them in a compressed ISO (ISZ) that I mount with Daemon tools when needed and have a junction in the MATLAB directory.

Can't forget the Microsoft Virtual CD for mounting ISOs that's like 60kB.

For burning I like ImgBurn

these are for windows though. i dont know any for mac. sorry. I recommend daemon tools and virtual clone drive for mounting and power iso or magic iso for burning.

Can someone explain to me why this is more useful than daemon tools? I fail to see why mounting a zip is better than unzipping it. Both seem to be about the same effort.

isn't starburn enough? it does all the cd related things(ok most of the things) . it even mounts an iso file eliminating the need for an additional software.

magic disk is the best. It sits in your tray and you can even rip disks to iso, nrg, uif and one I cant remember

Is this the type of program I could use where a dictionary or encyclopedia program wants its data disk in a drive when I use it. I could copy the dictionary disk to the hard drive and then point the program at it.

@D Wiz: I have heard that in the latest Daemon Tools release that it now contains spyware and it is much harder to uninstall. Not a fact though just pointing out what I have heard

@x_shoppy_x: Last I checked, daemon tools does include some sort of adware-y search bar during install. However, all it takes to install it without the search bar is to uncheck one box during installation. See: [www.tech-recipes.com]

So basically, if you pay attention during installation, you can install it and it causes no problems.
