Get Google Maps Screenshots to Go
Posted by Gina Trapani at 6:00 AM on July 20, 2008
Reader Chimera says that you can use the iPhone 2.0 software's built-in screenshot-taking ability to save images of Google Maps to your device before you leave the house (and the fast Wi-Fi connection) for directions at-the-ready. This technique is especially handy for iPod touch owners, and would work with any handheld device with maps and and screengrab capabilities.

Is it me, or is this a bit redundant with 3G (any 3G device with Google Maps, not just the iPhone)? I can see why you might not want to sit around waiting for maps to crawl onto the screen with GPRS, but on a 3 phone it's pretty instant and has the added bonus of being searchable (where was that street again?!).

it's not redundant if you have a not-so-special data plan, and it allows you to save a few bucks.

@PhilComments: Assuming you are in an area with 3G coverage

Yeah.. I Find it quite handy. I have a Danish data plan with 300 MB avalible pr. month.. It would be nice to suck as mutch as possible on the free wireless at home before having to pay pr. MB.

My ipod touch downloads the directions I lookup including images of each turn I can step through, and does not require a connection for me to go between them already. Taking a screenshot seems necessary, unless perhaps you needed to store multiple sets of directions.

What an interesting way to store an address book perhaps.

this is a very useful tip. But, is it just me or does the iPhone GPS work perfectly for everyone even with just EDGE? Seriously, I've never had to use 3G for GPS at all. EDGE works beautifully.
