Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta Now Available
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 12:30 AM on July 19, 2008
Windows Mobile only: The newly-released Opera Mobile 9.5 beta offers a host of features for surfing on your handheld device. The browser operates in full-screen mode to maximize the amount of web site you see without cluttering things up with toolbars. Restore access to the toolbars by tapping small silver arrow in the lower corner of the screen. Opera Mobile also has support for full-screen browsing similar to Microsoft's experimental browser Deepfish. You can look at the entire page at one time and choose which area you want to zoom in on for closer examination. The full page browsing is handy for manoeuvring around web sites that aren't mobile phone-optimised, instead of playing the scrolling game to figure out if you can find what you're looking for. Opera Mobile 9.5 beta is a free download for Windows Mobile only.

Might want to note that the beta is only for touchscreen devices, not windows mobile smartphones. (Doesn't work on my Moto Q, for example)

Early reports are saying it's a memory hog. I was going to instal it but think I may wait a while.

Just a word or warning, I've been reading all over that the beta version, when you exit, is causing all alerts to turn off (SMS, Email, VM, Reminders) as well as changing the default SIP back to the WinMo SIP.

I've not tried it yet. But so far the best browser is Netfront.

wow it seems that is unstable i think i will wait. The only thing about it and most of you will agree is that it is not FREE :( Once it reaches its final release do you know how much would it be?

@rckymtnrfc: I just installed the prior Opera version on my phone, and it reset a bunch of my settings including my wallpaper... annoying.

Looking forward for a Symbian version. But I doubt it will be able to beat the free Opera Mini on my relatively small screen device.
Any thoughts?

I tried to download it to my Axim X30 and it gives me an error about it not being a valid CE file or something...blah. Maybe I will try it on my PPC-6700.

Go on then, where's the Symbian/S60 version? Opera 8.65 is far better than the slow old thing that comes with the OS, but it's getting a bit dated and clunky. Have they stopped developing it for these phones?

Works OK on my Samsung i760, but is a total memory hog, it was constantly running out of memory with more than one tab open on pages with a lot of graphics. It is quite slow, and with the install of 6.5 megs and another 4 megs of default cache it takes up quite a bit of space for a mobile application installed into the internal memory. (the relase notes say that it has some issues installing to expansion cards)... Id wait for a more stable release. Its fun, but not practical for every day use.

@rckymtnrfc: Ah, so that's what happened to my alerts. This beta is defiantly a memory hog, and the Zoom in function is craptastic, I was having to go back to the menu and zoom in at least 5-6 times before the screen was easy to read. I uninstalled after two days. Now where's the skyfire beta 2 of a firefox mobile beta?

On my Tilt, this just isn't as robust as Opera Mini. Seems like it should be, but it's not.
