Xrecode Converts Audio, Automatically Splits Long Files
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on July 18, 2008

Windows only: Free application Xrecode converts your audio files from popular formats to any of the same formats. While it may not have the complexity and advanced features of previously mentioned MediaEncoder Audio Edition, it's also less complicated to use—just drag files you want to convert into Xrecode, choose the output format, and get started. Xrecode also sets itself apart with smart options for splitting audio by CUE files or by silence—perfect for quickly splitting large audio files, like your vinyl-to-MP3 conversion. Xrecode is freeware, Windows only.

Nifty.
@darkdantedevil: Yeah, I was just thinking that this sort of program would be perfect for audiobooks that weren't already split.

I've been using Slice Audio File Splitter (freeware) to split large mp3s.

Works great. Not quick, but that could just be my desktop.
(Also wish it named files 01,02.. rather then 1,2...)

@darkdantedevil: I'm in the same boat as your friend. I have a few audio books that are single files(~900MB). If Xrecode can split them at the chapter breaks I will be one happy camper...

@darkdantedevil: Haha! Same feeling. I was looking for a new converter today. I'm using VLC lately. And here it is. This site surely hacks our lives.

I should have noted above that AudioBook Cutter is for mp3 files only.

For splitting files with silence detection, I use the open source version of AudioBook Cutter. It allows you to choose the approximate length (in minutes) of each split.
Unfortunately, the author decided to release newer versions as closed source and removed ability to choose the filename prefix, but claims that the silence detection algorithm was greatly improved. Now the open source version tells you that an update is available, and prompts you to download the freeware version. I ignore these notifications, but you could just use your favorite file renamer (or even Windows' built-in renaming ability) after splitting.
