Gmail and GCal Prep for Offline Use
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:50 AM on July 18, 2008
Alex at the Google Operating System blog hears word that Google Calendar and Gmail will have Gears-supported offline modes in about six weeks, and a few users have already seen accidental offline prompts. Intriguing news, to say the least. Photo by NOTICIAS-TIC.

It would be really special if this would finally allow my windows mobile to love up to Google with some hot, hot Sync action.
Yeah, that was poetical.

Seemed inevitable. However, I wonder how well this performs vs. POP and/or IMAP as a local Gmail client alternative. Time will tell, I guess.

A use for gears, it was only a matter of time...

This just may be enough to get me on the gears bandwagon

I will stick with Outlook until Gmail/Gcal offers tasks at the very least. Journal and Notes would be nice as well. Oh, and full BlackBerry sync as well.
I don't always have my laptop with me. That's where the BB comes in. Until all of that is available, I'll continue to use Outlook for my desktop/offline needs.

Guys,
Off line mode is something that lot of users will love.
Out Free MS Outlook integration application KiGoo ([www.getkigoo.com]) is planed to have it in the near future, also with support for multiple calendars and Google Doc access.

Meh, I'd rather see Google implement exchange support, so that iPhones and other smartphones can get push email, without losing the *@gmail.com address (sorry, email forwarding is not really acceptable).

Actually I find it strange that FF is moving towards building-in offline support, while google seems to be pent up in moving their applications towards the gears add-on.
Well, now that I think of it, when FF comes around it would be simply a matter of removing the need for a plugin, wouldnt it?
I cant wait though, this will probably be my most sought after feature in g-apps yet.

@mskadu: Except that gears has been around for longer, is supported by bunches of sites, and works in IE and FF.

Is google calendar ever going to be more smoothly integrated with gmail? I find it such a hassle sometimes, would be nice to have a clean way to use both at once.

will there be a limit on how much gets stored offline? gears is useless to me on google reader because it only stores the last 1000 stories. I want everything stored offline!

@dualstub2006; Google has pretty good Gcal-Blackberry sync. It was what made me switch from iCal. Its nice for my wife to be able to see/add to my schedule and have it automatically synced to my phone. It's also nice to not have to remember to manually sync with my computer.

About time esp with gmail. One problem is that it will take a while for google apps to follow suite. Still also waiting for complete google docs support with gears.
