Firefox 3.0.1 More Secure and Stable
Posted by Gina Trapani at 10:46 AM on July 17, 2008
In Firefox's Help menu choose Check for Updates to download Firefox 3.0.1, a minor update that fixes Firefox 3's most common causes of crashes. This update won't shouldn't cause any add-on incompatibilities (but apparently does here and there according to commenters). [via]

Not true in my case as it complained about Abduction and Tab Mix Plus which I had working under 3.0. Firefox has now disabled those add-ons for me. Maybe I can make a few tweaks in the install.rdf files to get them back.

I don't use many add-ons. But on Vista, about 2 minutes after starting Firefox, my browser freezes for maybe 5 minutes then continues again like nothing happened. Also, there is a long delay before Live Bookmarks RSS is updated.

AGH! I should have read the comments. I installed it, but then Tab Mix Plus went out - a rather important add-on for me. Why the heck don't they display this in the BEGINNING of the install?! I would have chosen NOT to install it and waited until that issue was resolved.
Any how, I had to go on a hunt for the old version (downloaded it off of some site and am hoping that it didn't install anything else). AGH!

By the way here is how to get Tab-Mix Plus working if you want:
Grab the dev version from here, SAVE it to your desktop, don't "install" it.
[tmp.garyr.net]
Then:
COPIED FROM [tmp.garyr.net]
**************
Right-click on it.
Select 'open with' if available, otherwise, select 'open'.
Choose 'select the program from a list'.
In subsequent dialogue box, select WinRar (7Zip worked for me.)
At the top level of the archive you should find 'install.rdf'.
Drag 'install.rdf' to the desktop.
Right-click on it.
Select 'open with' if available, otherwise, select 'open'.
Choose 'select the program from a list'.
In the subsequent dialogue box, select Notepad (GVim worked for me.)
Search for line 'em:maxVersion="3.0"'.
Replace "3.0" with higher version. ("4.0" worked for me.)
Save file.
Drag 'install.rdf' from desktop back into the archive, overwriting existing file.
Exit Notepad, WinRar and delete install.rdf from your desktop.
Drag the .xpi from your desktop into your FF window. Install.
Delete the .xpi from your desktop (or save it, your choice.)
***********
I actually changed it to 3.0.1 (it was "3.0"), and used WinRar, and it all worked fine.

Posted 1:51 PM 17/7/08
Since it's a bugfix update, I doubt it actually causes compatibility problems. It's probably just that the plugin author specified 3.0 exactly as the max version, instead of 3.0.*.
For those of you having problems with Firefox reporting extension incompatibility:
You can just set bool extensions.checkCompatibility in about:config to FALSE to stop it doing that... I'd probably advise turning it back on after all your extensions fix that, to stop you from installing something that IS incompatible. Or you could go and edit the install.rdf of all the problematic extensions.

I dunno perhaps using Lifehacker is causing a dimunition of brain cells. The update service (Help>Check for Updates) specifically says:
"This update will cause some of your extensions and/or themes to stop working until they are updated"
Pressing "Show List" even lists the ones that won't work! Given the invaluable TabMixPlus is there and there seems to be a glitch with the TMP makers getting out a final version - I'm going to pass on this update for now.
Also FF3 politely informs me of its updates with a little slide in notice - has no-one seen this?

the problem with firefox is all this add-on bullshit. mozilla have to keep patching and fixing and plugging holes, resulting in tons of broken plugins. so you wait as on by one the plugins get updated, only for mozilla to move the goal again. ff should have the top plugins as PART OF FIREFOX. dont ask "which ones are top???" because its FREAKING OBVIOUS

It's up to you guys of course, but I would consider if you really want to run about:config and disable the version checking or run MR Tech.
The problem with this is that you can later forget you did, and easily install an addon that really IS incompatible, making a mess of things.
Take a look at my earlier post (and the one right above this, for a way to force individual addons to appear to be the correct version. Do this and you can get that addon with just the incorrect version number (like Tab Mix Plus) to work, without removing all version protection.

If you guys are having compatibility issues, just grab the Nightly Tester Tools extension here:
[addons.mozilla.org]
With that you can override Firefox's compatibility checking.
Though, I still have one remaining gripe with Firefox 3. It doesn't remember my open tabs when I close it using the 'x' in the upper-right.
But if I close it by selecting 'File\Exit' it will.
I've seen the bug report on Mozilla but can't find it right now (too early).
Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone know of a fix?

My suggestion would be:
Go to the folder: C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx.default
copy the bookmarks.htm file found there.
Now uninstall Firefox and reinstall the 3.0.1 version
Import your bookmarks from the bookmarks.htm file you saved
Go to [addons.mozilla.org] and install the addons you like to use one at a time and be sure Firefox is happy between each install.
This should correct any problems.

Scan through the comments. There are several posts with a solution for the Tab Mix Plus issue.

My tab mix plus isn't working with 3.0! Does any one know why? looks like there's no reason for me not to upgrade to 3.1, but I think I'll wait to see if there is an answer to my tab mix problem in 3.0.

BTW - Those instructions are for Vista, if you are still on XP the bookmarks will be in C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxx.default
Also, after you uninstall you might want to be sure to remove the whole ..\Firefox directory to be sure you get rid of old stuff messing you up. In Vista it's a bit tricky to get rid of C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\ since it is hidden by default, but you can turn on "show hidden files and folders" in folder options.

TMP DOES work on 3.0.1. Install the following and it will work:

@gawyn210: I already mentioned how to fix that. Go download the latest dev-build from [tmp.garyr.net] and once you've downloaded it, open with something like 7-Zip/WinRar/Winzip and edit the install.rdf file [change MaxVersion line be something like 4.0 or something like that]. Works like a charm for me.

Looks like they added a new feature with this version for Ctrl+Tab showing previews of the tabs and stuff. It doesn't seem to work for me, though, but it's probably Tab Mix Plus causing it or something.

@willisja: I also downgraded to FF2 after FF3 crashed multiple times per day whenever I had a Gmail tab open (or when I closed Gmail's tab!). Your experience isn't unique -- just google "Firefox 3 Gmail crash" to see what I mean.

This has already been said but it bears repeating since clearly a lot of people have missed it.
The easiest way get your add-ons working again if they say they're incompatible, install Nightly Tester tools and use the "Override Compatibility" option that it adds to the addons dialog.

@musicphreke:
I disabled Tab Mix Plus, and all I get when I CTRL-Tab is the usual switching between tabs. No preview or anything.

Looks like 3.01 fails Acid2 (whereas 3.0 passed).

Paste and Go Notes.
I figured it out with the following:
(1) Go to where your extensions are located..
for example:
C:\Documents and Settings\(UserID)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\zyyz6m23.default\extensions\pasteandgo2@holio.lin
(2) Make a copy of the folder: pasteandgo2@holio.lin
(3) Locate the install.rdf file..
(4) Open it in your favorite editor..
(5) Find the line: <em:maxVersion>2.0.0*</em:maxVersion>
(6) Change it to: <em:maxVersion>3.0.*</em:maxVersion>
(7) I was prompted to uninstall it, but on restart it prompted me to enable and work with it.
Cool!
Thanks,
Kent

My add-ons are all fine after the upgrade. Now, my themes, that's another story. I got 2 out of 4 disabled on my work laptop and some 5 out of 8 on my home PC. Not that it's a big deal anyway, as I've been using the default theme since I upgraded to FFx 3.0, but hopefully, these incompatibilities will get fixed soon.

Maaaaan!! WTF!!! FF3 is a mess and I'm using Opera till I decide to rollback to 2.
Are L.H. users being used as Beta testers now?? This article should be amended or taken down before someone else gets everything reset or borked.

I saw this yesterday, but didn't manually run an update because of issues noted here in the comments. I wasn't having major problems before though, either. At work today, I was notified that an update was available, and it offered to show me what add-ons were incompatible with the update. It was only Tab Mix Plus, so I web searched and found that an update for it is available. I installed that, then tried the 3.0.1 update, and it didn't point out any conflicts, so I installed it. I'll have to check at home, where I have more add-ons, and see what's incompatible and what has updates before I run an upgrade there.

My firefox won't even load. I have reinstalled the new app 3 separate times, rebooted the computer, and nothing. The task manager does not say that I am even running the firefox.exe. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

In contrast to all the horror stories in these comments I didn't lose any of my extensions in this update. I'll list them in case anyone is hesitant about updating thinking any of these will break. I'm running Vista SP1.
Adblock Plus 0.7.5.5
Customize Google 0.72
Download Statusbar 0.9.6.3
Flagfox 3.2.7
ForecastFox 0.9.7.7
Gmail Manager 0.5.5
Move Media Player 1.0.0.07103010
NoScript 1.7.7 (Updated at the same time as Firefox)
Organize Status Bar 0.6.2 (Tweaked to run on FF 3)
PDF Download 1.0.1.2
PicLens 1.7.0.3459 (Contrary to soulcabbage's comment above, it works fine)
Tiny Menu 1.4.9

@rraheja: Interestingly, my RTM for Gmail extension wasn't flagged as incompatible and is working. Google Gears won't work, however (no biggie) and, as others have mentioned, Tab Mix Plus was flagged incompatible (but that's working again, as I downloaded MR Tech Toolkit and turned off incompatibility checking and TMP is working fine (so far). All of my "Better..." extensions were left unflagged and appear to be working as expected. TMP was the big problem for me, but, again, it seems okay after turning off the compatibility checking for now.

There is another addon that allows you to override the compatibility warnings, and it worked for me since I use TabMixPlus, which is now working with the 3.0.1 update. The addon is Nightly Tester Tools, you can find it here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6543 After you install it and restart Firefox, go to Tools\Addons\ and you'll see an "override all compatibility" button, which you press and keep going. Things then work OK. This was covered in Lifehacker sometime back...

I'm so happy to find this post! But I wish I found it before I agreed to download the upgrade. Sadly, NONE of my add-ons are working. I used:
KeyScrambler
Organize Status Bar
TwitterFox
Tree Style Tab (LOVE this one!)
Tiny Menu (again, great to grab more real estate)
Quick Restart
Greasemonkey
FoxClocks
Fierr
All-in-One Sidebar (another one I use frequently)
Now it's just a boring, standard browser. I hope this gets corrected soon.

When I go to Tools>add ons, nothing works. I can't uninstall, disable, or work on the options for any of them. It keeps saying "Restart Firefox to complete your changes". Obviously I've restarted many, many times, but it hasn't changed. The *only* button that works is the little x in the corner, and god help me if I click on anything else, because then even won't work.
I used to love Firefox, but I've been having so many crashes and problems lately (with 2 and 3) that I'm seriously thinking about going back to IE.

More stable? That's a laugh. FF 3.0.1 crashes 5 to 10 times a day and more when viewing ip security cameras like this one [64.53.55.34]
I had to give up and use Netscape 9.0.0.6 that I never deleted after it stopped updating.
Sure hope they stop lying and fix it soon. Other tan that I love it.

Nightly Tester Tools works for me sometimes and sometimes I just keep getting asked to restart FF to install extensions. God, I had FF2

I had FF2 running so great, now it feels like I have a classic car sitting in the garage and I can't drive it around because it needs fixed even thought most things on the car are easy to fix, I can't find any of the parts anywhere. I'm thinking rollback time.
