Gmail Contacts Get Selective
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on July 16, 2008

Gmail appears to be slowly rolling out a new feature in their Contacts application that allows the user to selectively determine whether or not you want to automatically add everyone you email to your contact list. You're likely to send and receive a lot of email in the course of a day, but if you would prefer to keep the people in your contacts list limited only to the people you add—which means a much cleaner, more streamlined list of real contacts as opposed to all 5000 you've accumulated with the old system—looks like you can now do that through the My Contacts pane. Like most things Gmail-related, Google appears to be rolling this out slowly. If you're seeing this new functionality in your account (we aren't yet), let's hear more about it in the comments. Thanks Matthew!

Whoa - talk about slow rollout. I had the functionality for a minute - took the time to move suggested to "My Contacts" and then....voila. Functionality gone. BOOO!
Still - it's about time they fixed that. I hated cleaning out my contact list because one of my friends sent out a mass email asking for money for a marathon for cancer or situations like that....

Wow - I have the functionality. It rocks. Had to go add about 1/3rd of my real contacts who were on the suggested list - but this definitely helps so much. ABOUT TIME GMAIL!!!!!!!!

No love here, either. I also just noticed that my Lab icon is gone and I no longer have Labs as a selection in my Settings menu either. I guess the fun is over for these last few experiments.

I see it too. Don't forget it even catorgorizes Medical Contacts too. It's not bad - but it still needs improvements.

I see it in my account. Seems like it pretty much made 2 new groups. My Contacts, and Suggested Contacts. When looking at a suggested contact there is a button on the top that says "Move to My Contacts", which puts that person in the My Contacts group.

It's already available in my dutch version of Gmail, but it doesn't play nice with the Gmail Redesigned theme (black text on a dark background). It's still quite useful.

Very nice. And especially so since I sync Gmail with my Address Book with my iPod. Isn't that a freaking weird path?
Anyways, Contacts now have a separate category called Suggestions that you can select all and delete if you want. I used it to copy out the information by hand and insert it into the real contacts.
It would be nice to have a merge feature.

I don't see it in my account yet, but I'm really looking forward to it! This is the main feature that I never really liked about Gmail. Sure, it might make it easier for some users to have addresses auto-inserted into their Contacts list, but for me, it has always been such a hassle to keep going through my list and delete all of the people whom I've only ever emailed once. Hopefully this new feature will show up in my account soon!

FINALLY!!! It was so annoying deleting all those sale-xxxxxx@craigslist.org email addresses.

I guess I don't see this as a big deal... I never manually look at my contacts. When I compose a memo, the typeahead fills in the likely contacts, and I pick from the list. I can relate to the sale-xxx@craigslist.org addresses (as mentioned by strabes above), but I only have a handful of those.
I kind of like that Google remembers contacts without me having to manually add them... However, I suppose I should point out that I currently have about 500 contacts, not 5000, so I guess that would make a big difference.

The killer feature I need is shareable contacts and groups, just like shareable documents. My wife and I both end up with repeated contacts.
The other nice feature, but less common, would be composite entries for households/companies. This way one can create a "the Smiths" entry with the same physical address but separate email addresses (or even separate phones) for each family member.
Oh well, one can only hope...

I'm already seeing it in both my regular gmail account and my Google Apps account. First thing I did was uncheck the "Automatically add..." option. Thank the FSM they finally got around to implementing this feature. Now syncing with Apple's Address Book is actually useful.

I'm surprised so many people don't have the "Move to My Contacts" button. My GMail has the button. It also has a "Erase Contact's Google Calendar" button, a "Read Contact's Google Notebooks" button, a "Locate Contact in Google Maps" button, and (my personal favorite) a "Peek Through Contact's Bedroom Window in Google Earth" button.

I'm seeing it...nice feature...I'll have to watch closely and see how / when it decides to move someone from "Suggested Contacts" to "My Contacts" in order to determine whether or not to leave the box checked.

I've got it and I didn't even know about it. :P
I like that they put it in "suggested contacts" that separates them from my own. I'll likely keep it that way for now. It is handy when I'm going back to search for something I emailed to someone.
@Dignan17: They've moved them already, so you don't have to.

I've got it. It seems to work pretty well, as far as organizing my contacts list goes. The majority of the contacts it selected for My Contacts were people I actually e-mail, or want to easily find their information. I approve-stamp this one.

I just realised that the gmail contact-management has been improved significantly! Don't know, when this has been rolled out, but it's the first time I see (on my german gmail) that it is possible to save multiple email-adresses, phone-numbers and adresses on one contact. Great!!

Great idea, but one thing that I find annoying is that if you try to add a contact or email address existing contact and it is in one of the suggested contacts it won't let you - "Error saving data: Cannot have more than one contact with email address '******@****.***'"

@caedus: you can search for craigslist and select all contact and hit the delete button.
I would love to see some stats like number of mails to each contact to and from, also be able to sort by these numbers. Finally a network of contacts i.e. who all are usually mailed together like a correlation between of sorts.

I got all excited and didn't read the description well. Went to the suggested contact list and started moving the ones I don't contact to my contact list. Later realized my mistake, but now there is no way to revert. You cannot remove items from My Contacts to suggested contact, its a one way street.

It seems to work well enough, but I thought it would be a little smarter than it is. Still, it didn't take too much effort to go through and add in the handful of contacts that I thought it missed.

Yup, my account now has a list of suggested contacts. I also really like the layout of the new contacts page. Having the individual and group panes on the same screen (and having an big + for adding individual contacts to the group pane) is really intuitive. Much cleaner than Hotmail, for example, in which every mode looks the same and it's actually hard to tell if you are managing contacts or looking at email.
