Firefly Turns Firefox into a Local File Manager
Posted by Gina Trapani at 12:42 AM on July 16, 2008

All platforms with Firefox: Even though Firefox 3 has decent file and FTP browsing built-in, the Firefly extension aims to turn the 'fox into a robust file manager. Browse your local drives and folders in Firefox using Firefly, which offers tabs, can split your screen to view several folders, preview images, open, rename, copy, and delete files, and display a hierarchical folder tree in the sidebar. Not sure Firefly is quite as polished as it could be, but if you're dying for a Windows Explorer alternative and Xplorer 2 and others like it aren't cutting it, Firefly is an option. See this Firefly tutorial for more of what it can do. Firefly is a free download which works (almost) wherever Firefox does—the developer says definitely Windows and Linux, but less testing's been done on the Mac.

@jsmorley - Couldn't agree more. I don't see the great need for this.

Whew... I couldn't click on "uninstall" fast enough. Aside from the clunkiness and ugliness, why not put a disk defragger or a registry cleaner or a word processor inside Firefox too? A solution without a problem here...

@thegsusfreek -- I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that! Too funny!

I guess you could say... it aims to misbehave.

Love that website design circa 1995.
The extension is a nice idea though, I hope they get the kinks worked out for I'm a slut for all-in-one type programs and would totally use this.
Hell, I would use a defragger, registry cleaner, and word processor Firefox extension.
Hey, Firefox Operating System extension, ftw! ;)

ummm i am not sure if i want to mix my web browsing with file browsing i really prefer to keep them separate. I prefer Windows Commander :)

The point would be tabbed file browsing and better image preview, but yes--I should've stated more assertively in the post--that Firefly is definitely NOT as polished as it should be.

Whats the point? Are there any special automated upload features? Thats the only reason I can think of to even have this extension.
Also, a built in firefox wordprocessor wouldn't be a bad idea...

@jsmorley: Same here. The floating box with the file details gets in the way. The left column with the file structure is just for looks you cant use it to navigate quickly to different drives or folders. The "User Input" section on their site is not working and that is probably a good thing.

Just throw the contents of the Control Panel into the Tools menu. Done.

Sold!
Any fans of Konqueror want to defend file manager/browser hybrids?

A mozilla-based, cross-platform file browser seems like a good idea, but I don't think a FF extension is the proper implementation.

@Sahel Khan:
I agree about the word processor. Something I can open in a tab and edit then switch tabs and preview what I've edited. Maybe syntax highlighting support would be nice.

@Johnny Pneumatic: I DO! Firefox is my favrite browser, but Konqueror is a close second. Konqueror's builtin FTP is WAY better than stuff like FireFTP. I like being able to just drag & drop stuff using tabs and multi-pane view. FWIW, I also prefer Konqueror to Dolphin as a file manager.

I like the idea of a file manager/browser. When working from a browser on a few sites I have running Typo3, it would be nice to be able to look through files I may need to edit or upload, such as ts templates, css files, images, etc... If there was a decent text editor plug-in as well I could do most of my work from just FF.

@xnendron: There is a Firefox based file browser called NexusFile. [www.xiles.net]
Unfortunately, it's Windows only...

For screen shot capturing, I use printscreen / alt + printscreen, along with a ~30 line perl script that uses Win32::Clipboard to monitor the windows clipboard and automatically save any images/text that are copied to the clipboard.
So basically, I press printscreen whenever I want to capture something, then load the images in photoshop and crop them afterward.

Interesting idea, so Firefox will be a super app for most of users . FTP, File manager, Web Dev ...

the drive path bar across the top would be better if you could just enter the path of what you are looking for and just hit enter. tried to do that and it just sits there.

it could work a little more smoothly. makes it easier at work so I don't have to open explorer to get to network folders.

@Nxqd3051990: Gadwin PrintScreen does this too and is freeware. When I press the printsceen button it saves the screen to the desktop as a jpeg & opens the image up in Paint.NET for editing! Small memory footprint...very handy!

Uninstalled this almost immediately as it crashed firefox but now the toolbar is still there and pops up every time I start Firefox (all be it only displays 3 spacer icons and none of the firefly options). Any body have any idea how to fix this?
