TuneUp Automatically Updates and Fixes Your iTunes Metadata
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on July 15, 2008
Windows only: Music application TuneUp scans your iTunes library to fill in and clean up your music's metadata, including album art. After you install it, just point it at songs in your library you want to clean up; TuneUp fingerprints and analyzes them and then provides a diagnostic overview of your missing or incorrect metadata. You can then verify and clean up all your metadata with the stroke of a button. In theory it's very similar to previously mentioned MusicBrainz, but it's an altogether fresh take with a few more features.
For example, similar to the previously mentioned iConcertCal, TuneUp lists upcoming concerts for artists in your library; it also lets you explore your music through a web digest of YouTube videos, articles, and merchandise related to bands you like. I just finished testing TuneUp on around 40 entirely unlabeled or poorly labelled tracks, and the results have been impressive. Not only does the app update the metadata with accurate, consistent information, but it does it all live, updating your library on the fly. TuneUp is ad-supported and free to use, but you're limited to 500 cleans and 50 cover art look-ups per month. A premium version without any limitations is also available for $US12 annually or a lifetime price of $US20. TuneUp is Windows only, with a Mac version planned for later this year.

Isn't anybody concerned about the security aspects of this app? The EULA points out that TuneUp/GraceNote gets AND STORES a list of every track in your iTunes. Sony owns GraceNote. Do YOU want to tell Sony about every song on your HDD?

If I were at home, I'd give this a try and find out the answers to this myself. But, since I'm not, I'll ask:
1) When you say that it's limited to 500 cleans and 50 cover art things, do you mean you can only activate it that many times per month? Or like...only 500 songs a month?
2) What resolution is the album art work?

Is there a program out there to recover a corrupt iTunes library?

This app was ok, I didn't particularly like it. I didn't try "cleaning" anything, my library is pretty organized and well labeled, but the adverts and the fact that it was prolly making iTunes even more bloated was too much, so I will be uninstalling it shortly.

Always the one to be the critic, I didn't appreciate the 500 clean limit. Surely I'll never use it 500 times, but if I did, then there wouldn't be enough to clean my whole itunes, considering that I can only clean up to around 50 to 60 songs at a time.
50x500=25000. Not enough.
Secondly, the application was too cluttered. I purposely disorganized my AC/DC albums to see if it worked, and it did for the most part, but there was just too much stuff going on.
Decent app that can be better.

Wow, this is a really cool app!
I wish they would give you the rest of it for free, because I'm not about to shell out $20 for any small app (although if I was, this would be the one exception).
This is great for filling out the remaining missing information in all of your tracks.

Out of curiosity, would anyone pay to have someone or a business clean up their music collection?
Like a business that would get a copy of your library, clean all the tags, submit to any requests (like filling in extra fields that may not usually be seen or concerned about, or limiting the number of genre names)
And not only clean it up, but also embed lyrics and album artwork...so in the end it's absolutely pristine.
I still haven't found one good program other than using mediamonkey with a bunch of scripts and there's still a lot of manual work that needs to be done.
I'm wondering if there's a market.

I wish the post would have mentioned that a registration is required. After you download, go through the setup, and at the start of the program it requires you to register... which is not something I want to do if I am only going to use the program once or twice.

Good app, but it still can't replace my MusicBrainz Picard. It's just invaluable for everything tag-related. Plus it's 100% free!

@ shadx
I would pay for that. My music library runs to 300+G and was completely screwed by my various attempts to fix tags.
I'd try this tool but it "lists concert dates"...which means it needs web access, and it's another install (on top of picard, mediamonkey, tag&rename...etc,etc) that I don't want to make clutter with.
I would love to have a tiny program that doesn't have promotional features like that attached, that just found proper fingerprints, and tagged and renamed...but wasn't a cluttered mess to deal with on a large scale (remember...300+G, mostly disorganied, sigh)
I'd pay someone for sure.

I'm still trying to find a free application that will search for album art for my music. Everyone I've tried has one or more of the following issues:
- Isn't free
- Has a time or usaging limit
- Cannot handle "(disk 2)" in my albums title or use of "special" characters (eg. the ö in "Röyksopp")
- Downloads only "folder.jpg" but doesn't embed in the MP3
- Worked on Windows
Any suggestions?

@masterthundar: I agree Picard is great. I tend to complement it with MediaMonkey to embed those cover arts that it has missed and play the tunes in Foobar with automatic embedding of lyrics where available.

Okay - I just tried MusicBrainz/Picard and TuneUp. There is no comparison; TuneUp is the clear winner.
If Picard has direct iTunes integration, it is beyond me where it is. Also, the Picard interface is ridiculous, to say the least. TuneUp is drag and drop from your iTunes library. TuneUp works perfectly and the one little ad at the bottom of the application window does not bother me at all.
Go with TuneUp if you want to clean your iTunes library.

Great, now how about something that automatically reorganizes, downloads cover art, edits the metatags, deletes duplicates, converts to mp3 and strips DRM all at once (preferably for free)?

What a great application! I wish that you would have posted this sooner as I have spent countless hours editing meta data that TuneUp can do so much faster. I import a lot of music into iTunes from CDs and such and then bounce it back into Linux. Granted, it doesn't always work perfectly. It is still a good app., and the price is right. I can handle a small ad at the bottom.
I think most of the issues are with iTunes itself. It could be a lot more functional. It should be DRM free. It should clean up things for you and not be so stubbornly designed. The best strategy to use is to make sure everything is alright when you import. Thank you Wikipedia.

I tried TuneUp and it does not "clean up" tags. It is using the same Gracenote database that iTunes used to tag my files when I ripped them from CDs. I had to hand correct many varieties of band names, song names, capitalization errors, incorrect genres, misspelled genres, missing years, missing genres, incorrect years... ad nauseam. What a pain in the neck!
My test with a couple hundred files in TuneUp tells me that it suffers from the same problems.
Do not use TuneUp to "clean" your tags, unless of course, you enjoy fixing everything it broke by hand. Or if you just enjoy messy info in your library...
With all that said, the idea behind TuneUp is very good, IMO. I just wish the developer picked a better data source. It would be perfect if it could pull the data from allmusic.com.

Gabe Adiv here, CEO of TuneUp.
First of all, thanks to Lifehacker for the post and for all of your supportive comments!
I apologize for not posting earlier. Today has been a crazy (launch) day.
So, rather than be redundant and respond to all of your comments individually, there seem to be a few themes here which I'll address.
Mac Release: We will be releasing a Mac version of TuneUp this fall. I promise. We're currently testing it and it's looking good. We just want to make sure it's ready for prime-time.
Pricing: We tried really hard to come up with a model that works for everyone. We feel as though the free version is quite robust and works well for those people who have average size music collections or just want to kick the tires a bit before cleaning up their massive collection. The paid version gives you two options - a year subscription or a lifetime subscription. Our business model supports licensing fees we have to pay and a healthy (but nimble:-) team here to support you.
Other Services: I strongly encourage you to use what's out there. For us, they were either really hard to use, required an installation of an entirely new media player or didn't give results to our liking. That's why we built TuneUp.
Be sure to check out our "Now Playing" and "Concerts" features as well. Super fun and useful if you're a music junkie like we are. If you have any further thoughts, suggestions or complaints feel free to check out our forum at www.tuneupmedia.com/forum
Thanks again for all of your support!
Best,
Gabe

So, rather than answer all of your questions individually, there seem to be a few themes here to address.
TuneUp for Mac: We will be releasing in the fall. I promise. We are testing it right now and it's looking great. Just want to make sure it's ready for prime-time.
Other Services: The reason we started TuneUp is that other services were just too hard to use, required us to switch media players or didn't have great results. If you find these useful, fantastic.
Pricing: We feel like we've been pretty generous with the robustness of the free version and we really tried to be fair and flexible about the pricing for TuneUp Gold by offering the 1 year and lifetime subscription model. The fact is, we pay licensing fees to a number of companies ourselves and in order to "keep the lights on" we had to come up with a business model that would make sure we're here to support you for the long haul.
OK, that was a mouth full. If you have any other questions, thoughts, comments or concerns feel free to check out our forum at tuneupmedia.com/forum
Thanks again for all of your support!

I didn't like it, in the end - too cumbersome on the desktop (it tries to stay side by side with iTunes, and there is no option to manually position it. It just doesn't work with my Vista sidebar, for instance). Also, it's very slow and doesn't give too much feedback, so you don't know if it has frozen (it did, a couple of times). It consumes a LOT of CPU too. Maybe it's just my Windows Vista (yeah, I know), but anyway, I've just uninstalled it.

It completely deleted some of the concerts that I played in in college from my library and now I can't figure out how to get it back.
Now I finally have a reason to not only drop iTunes, but to completely trash my library and start fresh by reburning and reorganizing my cd's. Hope I don't get in trouble with RIAA for burning my own music...

@rabbiddaschshund
TuneUp does not have the ability to delete files.
What most likely happened is that your song was mislabeled. You can undo labeling on any song you've cleaned with TuneUp by clicking the "Undo" button (the orange arrow in the top right corner of the clean tab). Then drag any "cleaned" songs you're not sure about onto the TuneUp window, just like you did when you cleaned them. If you can't find the song, sort your collection by "Modified Date" in iTunes, then drag the latest batch of songs you've cleaned onto TuneUp. You can even drag more, we'll only give you the option to undo songs that TuneUp has processed and saved.
If you're still having problems, just send a note to support@tuneupmedia [dot] com and we'll walk you through it.
Thanks,
Gabe

Addendum to my last message: the concert recommendation feature is FUBAR. Apparently, based on the music in my collection, I should be interested in eight separate dates for the Stan James World Darts tournament (?) and about eight bazillion dates with James Blunt live in Manchester, who has never got within a mile of my collection.

Mixed results. Just tried this with a set of 40. Although it was pretty good at recognising songs on the whole, it did totally mess up a couple (admittedly from some fairly obscure early-90s alt-rock).
Main issue with it in use would be its arbitrary decisions about songs released more than once. Seems to me, from this sample, that if a song was both on an album and released as a single, it will tag it as the single release, which is annoying if you have other stuff from the same album. Also, from one set of three songs from the same album, it decided one was a live version and tried to tag it as such. Would be better if, in instances like this, it could offer you the choice from its database.
Certainly easy to use, though. Also quick, although not quite the 'two seconds per track' as advertised.

Considering that it shows ads, I really wish it was free.
While it has nothing to do with tagging, running the Last FM client simultaneously with iTunes usually gives me all the data (or links to data) I need to know about the band that is playing.

I just saved a whole bunch of new album art for itunes, with my ipod touch plugged in - but it doesn't seem like the ipod touch has been updated. Do I have to re-add the tracks to my ipod touch to get the album art on there, or is there an easier way?

found it incredibly annoying that the demo install asked for my birth date. I don't see whay a piece of software that fixes metadata in my music needs to know when I was born. I can see asking for a birth date when I pay for it, maybe... though it still isn't necessary for a credit card transaction. Never tried it because it annoyed me.
