Google Notebook Adds Bookmarklet for Quick Clipping
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:03 AM on July 15, 2008
Google Notebook already offers quick-clipping tools for Firefox and Internet Explorer users (although the IE7 version requires adding the Google Toolbar), but the recent addition of a "Note This" bookmarklet closes the gap for anyone on Safari or another non-standard browser, or those who like their browsers lean and clean. Select text on a page and hit the bookmarklet to take a quick note, or hit it with nothing selected to create a link to the page. Opera users (insert sigh here) can only view notebooks, unfortunately, so this won't help them add notes. Other than that, Notebook fans will want to make room on their toolbar for it.

Re: "Safari or another non-standard browser"
I would argue that Safari is less "non-standard" than the vaunted Internet Explorer, and I think most web developers would agree. Kudos to Google for broadening their offerings.

Besides "or another non-standard browser", Opera users will also enjoy this... as there's not official Google Notebook plugin/widget available from google to Opera...
...Also, FF extension gets messy sometimes when updates occurs (like not showing up at window's corner, but instead as a new window... and not working very well...)

Google Bookmarks is integrated into Google Notebook (i.e. they share the same labels) and there has been a Google Bookmarks bookmarklet out for a while that I have been using successfully on Safari. It might also work with Opera, but the downside is that it really is meant for capturing web addresses together with tags/labels and a short description, but not really as a notebook.
Log into Google Bookmarks and you will see the bookmarklet at the bottom of the page.

I prefer this to the Firefox extension because the extension likes to resize images to the width of its popup notebook window. But this bookmarklet could do with an option to choose which notebook to use - as it stands you can only add things to the notebook you were viewing last.

I tried this using IE7. It works great, except that it gets killed by my popup blocker each time and I have to temporarily allow popups on the site I'm clipping from in order for it to work.

Really happy to learn about this, b/c the extension seems to have a bug on FF3 for Macs (OS X 10.4) when you scroll down. (Screenshot here: [gregoireandco.org]). I'm forced to open the pop-up window, which usually gets stuck on loading. So the bug makes the add-on pretty much unusable for me.
And a quick google search for the bug yields very few mentions of it -- no other mac user has had this problem?
