GuitarCardio Works Out Your Fretting Fingers
Posted by Adam Pash at 3:39 AM on July 14, 2008
If you've been learning to play the guitar online and are looking for a few more challenges, web site GuitarCardio generates easy, medium, and difficult exercises to help develop your stamina. Not only are the fully customizable workouts good for building your fretting muscles, but they'll also help you improve your chops for walking through scales and reading tabulature, the most common musical notation for guitars you'll run into on the web.

Wow! I hadn't even thought to submit GuitarCardio here...
I'm the programmer behind the site, and I'm just stopping in to thank the LH crew for the link. I always appreciate it when someone thinks my work good enough to put in front of their readers - especially a site of LifeHacker's stature.
Thanks!
Cheers,
- Brad

Not that I couldn't just apply the same exercises to a 6-string bass, but if you're already going to hook up the bass players.........

This site is great for beginners, however once one learns the scale shapes the best thing to do is just use a metronome and practice them up and down the neck, rotating through 3, 4, and 5 note runs. This seems to be exactly what the site does, though I find it easier to simply remember the scales instead of trying to read the tabs as I go along.

I don't think the exercises are meant to be difficult to play, they're meant to build strength, dexterity, and stamina. They're also great for a warmup.
Even Perry Como has to clear his throat before he sings....

@TheMensch: true but you get to the point where running scales does nothing more then reinforce them in your muscle memory need some more challenging warm ups and exercises.

Even if you're a veteran, see if you can hold one of these things for five minutes. The real trick's probably not the playing or the physical stamina, but it's the mental aspect. These are more interesting licks than the average workout material. Good stuff! There are several good songs lurking in there...

Good site, I found it to be more fun than just practicing the few scales I have memorized. Thanks LH

I'm left-handed and I play a normally-strung guitar upside-down.
I tried to follow your exercises and broke three of my fingers. Could I have your address so that i can sue you please?

I'm guessing this is probably what Hannon is to virtuoso pianists. (Practice exercises to help increase speed and dexterity.)
