GrabUp Makes Screenshot Sharing Effortless
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on July 12, 2008
Mac OS X only: Freeware application GrabUp automatically uploads screenshots to the internet and pastes the URL in your clipboard for quick and easy sharing. The application installs as a preference pane in your System Preferences and integrates with your Mac's default screenshot shortcuts. So if you hit Cmd-Shift-3 and select an area for a screenshot, it's automatically uploaded to the GrabUp servers and the URL is copied to your clipboard. You can enable or disable GrabUp through the preference pane, and if you enable GrabUp for your menu bar you can go through the history of your screenshot upload URLs. GrabUp is freeware, Mac OS X only. For more robust alternatives, check out previously mentioned Skitch and Jing.

There's a free tool I wrote for Windows, it's on SourceForge (vvcap), also available at www.vvcap.net, does exactly same thing. Welcome to try it out. Source code for both server and client available for download. Features DES encryption of the images, which means that it's a lot harder to hack and steal your pics

It makes so much sense! Skitch is extra fluff, Jing is good for easy screencasting but still feels heavy. GrabUp seems to be the digital equivalent of pointing.
Although, it could be argued that the cursor should hold that title.

Ive been using Jing for awhile and i love it, it can do images or movies, and upload to their site, FTP or flicker.

For Windows, there is Shup, which Lifehacker won't do a review on.

very nice..
had something similar set up using a photobucket account on XP by having photbucket as an option in publish to web but this still involves first saving the image etc..
this will be very useful on my mac and hopefully save time..

I've been using this program for a few months, and it instantly became a program I can't live without. It makes the process of sharing visual information so simple, it's become a natural extension of my workflow.

Something similar can be done on Linux. Takes a little work. You need to install scrot, and the previously mentioned postr.
Then (on Ubuntu) you can create a new panel applet with the following properties.
scrot -t 35 -s '/home/username/Pictures/Screenshots/%%Y-%%m-%%d_$wx$h.png' -e 'postr $f'
When postr opens, your new screenshot wil be waiting, ready to tag and upload.

Pretty sure I tried this out a month of so ago, and discovered there is no way to delete or review screenshots you've uploaded. That may have changed.

Would be nice if it has an option to save the file first and then drag and drop it into the application. This allows the user to preview the picture.

Thought I would just mention that you must hit Cmd+Shift+4, not 3.
