DIY Moleskine Wallet Hack
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on July 12, 2008
Moleskine enthusiast Richard Bryan details how he replaced his wallet with his treasured Moleskine by sewing together an elastic book cover capable of holding his credit cards, cash, and business cards. The end result is certainly bigger than your average wallet, but if you carry your notebook with you wherever you go, why not take the route to convergence? Bryan's photostream provides a lot of great photos and details for pulling off the Moleskine wallet.

This thing just screams "steal me"! I wonder if this changes what he lists under "As A Reward $".

Agree. Not only is it begging to get stolen, then we'd hear the screaming about how I'VE LOST EVERYTHING!!! There are reasons certain items are kept in pockets out of sight.

Some people should donate their spare time to the world...

@jenheta:
Some people should recognize the benefits of having a hobby and delving into things they enjoy.
@everyone re: stealing
Haven't you ever seen a clutch purse, or a purse for that matter? Save for the credit card logos showing, it isn't any larger or louder than your average purse.

I'm sick of this "lol 2 much spare time" mindset. DIY projects (and people who make them) are fucking awesome.

Way too much of a man purse, sorry.

@Eris: In some cases, it's entirely appropriate to break out that mindset. This isn't one of 'em, though. :)

This is a really cool build.
I like the basic concept of combing a notebook with a wallet. I carry both around all the time. I figure to more safely accommodate my proper wallet belongings, a money clip, plastic card holders, etc. could be sewn into the notebook to leave these things inside the Moleskine instead of outside of it.

One cool thing about DIY projects is the process of creating a product. Not all wind up being practical.

It really needs a top cover to hide the credit cards. (Would be easy to make a cover. Velcro is your friend.) I would be nervous carrying it with the cards showing. If I used a moleskin, I'd be tempted to do this. (Though I'd have to add pockets or the like for all the mom things I carry - bandaids, chapstick, gum, etc.)

Too big for me. Maybe it could be pulled off with the Xsmall Volant (2.5" x 4"), but the Volant is soft-covered.

At the very least, it encourages you to write in the Moleskine....

Luv the pen. Do they also sell pens for men where you got that one?

I think its good that he used his mind to come up with a solution instead of throwing money at the problem. It may not be my taste but I think he should be proud of his idea.

I have been carrying a purse full time since 1990 when I finally found one (in Athens) that could accommodate all the crap I carried. That's purse ... p-u-r-s-e - not a "man" purse, just a purse. You guys who don't carry one should get with the program ;-)

This is too much for me. A slim purse for the hip pocket and when i need a bag for paper, pen, books.

Does the Moleskine still open up flat with all that padding on the cover?

I was thinking about giving this a shot until I realized nobody sews around my house. Might help if we had a sewing machine.
But I do love this kind of stuff.

This is silly. I use a Moleskine, and if I wanted to leave the wallet behind, I would simply use the expanding pocket inside the back cover to hold the driver's license, a credit card, and a 20 bill. Done. No sewing, no man purse, no mutilation of the Moleskine.

Can someone please explain Moleskines to me. I really don't get what the big deal on notebooks are.

battra92: There's nothing that special about them. I use one because it's a bit sturdier than a spiral notepad, has a built in page marker, and a convenient pocket in the back. I divide mine into a Task List (about half, crossing out tasks as I go), Project List (a quarter), Someday (a few pages of dreams), and Records (a bit less than a quarter of transactions, etc, to be noted at home). I go through about one Moleskine per year this way.
Almost any notebook could be used for the same things, of course, and I have noticed that quality of construction seems to be declining lately.

I'd first hoped that he'd managed to get all of his stuff inside of the Moleskine. But kudos for the work, anyway. It would be great for business cards and membership cards.

Not a horrible idea, but if I were to do this, I'd put the pockets on the inside of the covers for increased security and decreased ostentatiousness.
