MeeBone Packages Meebo Chat for Your Desktop
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:00 AM on July 11, 2008
Windows/Mac/Linux (Adobe Air): MeeBone, an Adobe Air implementation of chat aggregation service Meebo, makes the previously web-only chat service feel like a standard instant messaging app, complete with a skinny buddy list and pop-up chat windows. You can sign into AIM, GChat, MSN, ICQ, or any other service supported by Meebo, and you'll get all the integrated video and voice chat options offered on Meebo's website. It doesn't have all the options of dedicated desktop clients like Pidgin, but it is slick, easy to use, and adds simple video. MeeBone is a free download, requires the Adobe Air platform to run.

Is AIR for linux still buggy? Rather, is this app for linux stable?

Running a desktop app that runs a web-based app that emulates a desktop app. Might my computer explode? ;)

FWIW - I run Twhirl at home on Ubuntu and have had no issues...

That said, this just flat doesn't work for me on Linux. I've got Spaz working well, so I'm a bit doubtful it's an AIR-related problem, but who knows.

@Scott Wegner:
Meebo also integrates with Meebo rooms and with Meebo widgets (which I have on some websites to better communicate with visitors). The only reason I'm using Pidgin right now is that I prefer having dedicated windows, so this product is definitely geared toward me.

This doesn't really make sense. Meebo is based on the same backend that runs Pidgin (finch), so why not just use Pidgin? Or if you don't like Pidgin, create a new application that talks directly with Finch. This just sounds like it's adding unnecessary levels of code that are sure to slow things down.

Didn't work too well for me on XP. It knew I had new messages but didn't display them.

You can do this with the Meebo chat plugin for Pidgin and it is way more stable.Meebo Widget

The only time I use Meebo is when I'm away from my own computers. When I'm away from my own computers, I can't guarantee that the box I'm using will have Adobe AIR installed...in fact, that likelihood is extremely small. There's really no benefit to my using this over Digsby, Pidgin, Trillian, or Miranda.

@Scott Wegner and @L. S. Russell: One reason to use Meebo rather than Pidgin: Corporate Firewall. At my last job, the firewall was set up to only allow HTTP and FTP. Any IM programs, including Pidgin were useless. However, you could just go to meebo.com in a web browser, and chat away. That said, I don't know if this app would work behind the firewall... If it's using HTTP to access meebo.com, I suppose it would.

I was just about to lose all hope reading though these comments but then Jimi here gave mention to Digsby, and with that my world can continue to spin...
If you're not familiar with Digsby, do please check it out.

Without digging around too much - can anyone tell me if there's a chat service that allows you to have your archived discussions saved automatically on a directory you choose, so you can seamlessly use the service from multiple PC's and only have one archive, say, on a network drive?
Is this really too much to ask for? How hard could it be?

Ok, so of those links that have magically activated above... I was trying to demonstrate that the first was HTTP and the second was HTTPS.
I hope that helps to make sense of the madness.

@zkam: [www.meebo.com] is blocked where I work, as are all the IM protocols through the traditional desktops apps.
However, [www.meebo.com] is like a secret gateway to Narnia. Haha.

@War-N:
lol
thats exactly what i was thinking. Why DL meebo when the whole reason i use meebo is to avoid DLing an IM app?

@elsifer: Miranda? I'm pretty sure you can use one database on a network drive and use it that way but I'm not completely sure about that.

@zkam:
One cool thing you can do with Meebo and Pidgin is drop a little Meebo widget on your blog, and when people visit your site (if you are logged into Meebo, or Meebo with Pidgin) you will get a notification and you can chat with visitors.
You can see this working (when I am logged in) at my blog ([lesliesrussell.wordpress.com]).
Scroll about half way down the page and you'll see the little Meebo chat widget.

@elsifer:
Meebo saves them in their archives. you cant choose where but its available when you log into meebo. its totally easy to access.

Yep, works behind a corporate firewall, it is exactly as the web meebo...quite a burden on my resources though and it is also rather slow :-(

Sweet, this is awesome!
I use meebo because that way, I have access to my IM logs from anywhere. That said, I'm happy that something like meebone was made cause this way, I can keep using meebo without having to have firefox open.

Leave FF open to meebo, use the "pop out" button on the buddy list and minimize FF to the system tray (using XNeat , of course) or just hide it altogether. Why download anything?
The "Meebo me" gadget was wonderful for communicating with my wife, until her IT dept blocked meebo.com completely. Then we discovered campfirenow which wasn't blocked and wasn't popular. Yaay.
