Choose From Your Gmail Contacts in Any Email Form
Posted by Gina Trapani at 12:30 AM on July 11, 2008
Firefox with Greasemonkey only: The Google Contacts Autocomplete user script adds a drop-down of your Gmail contacts on any web-based email form where you'd enter an address. You must be signed into your Gmail account for the script to work; once it's installed, just start typing into an email text field to get search-as-you-type results from your Gmail address book. The first day or so it was installed, the script did nothing for me—then it magically started working (see screenshot)—so your mileage may vary. When it is working, this is a nifty way to access your contacts quickly and easily. The Google Contacts Autocomplete user script is a free download and requires Firefox with Greasemonkey. Thanks, Matt!

The reason that it didn't do anything is likely because it was building the database in javascript.

If you're using this to put in your own email address into forms (i.e. subscriptions), wouldn't the FF extension InFormEnter work better? Completely customizable list of info, whether it be names, email addreses, URLs, etc. I use it when commenting on blogs that want all that stuff.

Interesting idea … With all the addresses Gmail stores (against the user's will), this little hack could make filling out forms a real nightmare. Sweet! Installing this on my colleague's Firefox will be hilarious.

Neat script!
I had the same issue with it not seeming to do anything. I fixed it by opening up gmail and going to the contacts screen and looking at "All Contacts". Then I refreshed the page I was testing with and it worked great.

I think the idea is that if you are filling out one of those "mail this page to a friend" forms, this gives you access to your other email addresses so you don't have to switch tabs into Gmail, get the email address, and then go back to your form.

"DO NOT INSTALL THIS SCRIPT STEALS COOKIES!"
Can I get a confirmation that this script is not safe to install? It appears that I can find it useful, but I'm unsure.

a lot of scripts that have been posted recently to script sites are crap. while the script works, but a little extra has been added. See below:
"unfortunately downloaded versions of those scripts that were hacked and re-uploaded to send your cookie(s) to that URL.
which brings the biggest problems with these scripts - the vast majority of cookie stealers are hacked versions of legit scripts (Gmail Conversation Preview for instance). is there a way to filter out the legit original scripts with those that masquerade as them?"

oh behave you grumblers. This is a nice l'il script for people like me who send oodles of junk to the wife and friends - who all have long and unwieldy email addresses.

@nodutytorescue: I checked the script and it does not have any of the code in its source that they warned about.
